David Runciman’s podcast series 'Talking Politics: History of Ideas' provides introductions to the most important thinkers and theories behind modern politics, helping to make sense of our predicament through the revelatory ideas of Hobbes and Hayek, Fanon and Fukuyama, Bentham and De Beauvoir.
To mark the conclusion of the second series, David is joined by Pankaj Mishra, author of Age of Anger and Bland Fanatics, among other books, for a conversation about those subjects of David’s that Pankaj has also written about extensively - including Gandhi, Rousseau and Nietzsche - alongside an alternative canon of non-Western theorists of politics and crisis.

ABOUT THE LONDON REVIEW BOOKSHOP
Located in the heart of Bloomsbury, just a Rosetta Stone’s throw from the British Museum, the London Review Bookshop has established itself as an essential part of the capital’s cultural life. Opened in 2003 by the London Review of Books, it’s a place for people who love books to meet, talk, drink excellent tea and coffee, consume delicious cake, and of course, browse.
Our selection of more than 20,000 titles ranges from the classics of world literature to the cutting edge of contemporary fiction and poetry, not forgetting a copious display of history, politics, philosophy, cookery, essays and children’s books. And our lovely shop, designed by Amanda Culpin of utility provides the perfect setting in which to explore them all.
THE CAKE SHOP
Surrounded by books and fragrant with tea, the London Review Cake Shop is the modern answer to London’s long-lost literary coffee-houses. Accessed through the Bookshop via a corridor in the history section, the Cake Shop offers a small but vibrant menu, a wide selection of fine teas and a superior espresso. Above all, it provides a haven for reading and reflection.
The London Review Bookshop and Cake Shop are open Monday- Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6.30 p.m. The Bookshop is also open on Sunday, 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.

I read the novel Romantics of Pankaj ji. This was after I saw you referred to by Elif Shafak who was assisted by Pankaj and Shamsi for her novel Architect's Apprentice.

Did they ever decide on a list of people from now who deserve to be on a history of ideas series in the future?

I hope you weren't expecting a response anytime soon, but you asked a very difficult question.

I'm reading his book now and finding his attempt to connect current extreme and populist movements to the West, capitalism and Enlightenment frustrating. I don't think I'm being unfair to say he links ISIS with Brexit supporters, which is hysterical. Over the page he scoffs at those of us who say (of ISIS) "we, liberal, democratic, are not like these savages at all". And yet we are not, and we should say so.
