It’s amazing to me to think if Churchill hadn’t have been there we’d have surrendered, the Germans take Britain unopposed, gain control of the Royal Navy and the French fleet (cause Churchill is the one who ordered it to be sunk). And thereby gain complete control of the Atlantic stopping any relief from the Americans. No churchill, and Germany rules the world

I just can't understand that every point he makes as to why the Germans couldn't have got past the defenses is disproved by the fact the Allies got past the (better) German defenses doing the same thing the other way across the channel.

@@Addictedtobleeps Maybe, but they were not a patch on the German pillboxes, I live in Jersey which is full of German defenses built like the Atlantic wall bunkers. They have 6 foot thick reinforced concrete walls and roofs, thick steel around the gun ports with thick steel gun port plugs, steel gas tight doors and in France the Allies got through them all. Yes they took heavy casualties and the Germans would have too if they invaded Briton, but if they had landed enough troops and equipment they would have got through. BUT they didn't have ability to get their troops and equipment across like that, no fleets of landing craft, they would have used a lot of towed barges and trying to get them in close enough to get troops off in shallow water would have been difficult and slow. The British Navy would have made a real mess of the landing attempt as well.. The British pillboxes might have been effective, but only because so few troops would have made it across the channel safely.

@@Addictedtobleeps Thanks, Your video does show very well how the pill box system works and undoubtedly the pill boxes would have been a big problem and would have slowed down even a well executed invasion, which would give time for reserves to be sent to the break-through points.

There was a problem finding enough men to man the pill boxes, so they would have been manned by the Home Guard and told to fight to the death. So, you would have had men who were veterans of perhaps three campaigns fighting militia. That's why the pill boxes were needed.
@christopherwebber380416 күн бұрын
The British coastal defences were much weaker than those in Normandy and quite thin, even on the SE coast. You also have to take into account that the Germans knew how to do combined arms warfare, so you have to think of what happened on the Meuse - the men in the pillboxes were mostly OK but cowered in their pillbox under intense air attack, allowing the German troops to get close enough for the pill boxes (an extension of the Maginot line) to cause the men to surrender or be killed.
@christopherwebber380416 күн бұрын
2:07 28,000 in the SE? No, 28,000 throughout the country, mostly in the form of stop lines, and that's 28,000 structures, not necessarily pill boxes. They may have been "used for observation" but that's because there wasn't any other use for them at the time, as the invasion didn't happen. the stop lines were generally only one pillbox deep although they may have included a river or canal plus some barbed wire. tests done in 1941 by the Americans showed that these pillboxes were only effective against small arms fire and a 20mm gun such as that carried by a German armoured car could penetrate them. The pill boxes were built to a variety of designs by a variety of builders (mostly civilian contractors) and the building quality varied widely, with some being built with the embrasures facing the wrong way. Building these structures finally pulled Britain out of the Great Depression.

I recommend a box of maxi-pads. They are fast and efficient in an emergency situation where someone is losing blood. You can tape them right onto skin or wrap them with an Ace bandage. Granted, they aren't sterile, but they are clean and reasonably safe. Try to get unscented. If you have menstruating women in your household, they will need supplies. I was reading the comments and may have missed some of the items in your stash. Do you have chicken and beef broth powder? It's very warming and provides some salt and electrolytes when energy is low. Also good for sick people. Some vitamins (especially the powdered kind to make water a little more interesting) are useful. Another thing -- if you stash new boots or footwear of any kind, make sure to wear them and break them in a little before storing them away. You'll want them to be comfortable when you need them. Extra socks are always good. Duct tape, electrical tape, and Flexi-tape are all useful items too. I live very remotely in the jungle. I have to prepare for every rainy season as there are times I cannot leave my property to cross the river to any of civilization. Over the years, I've gotten pretty good at ensuring I have what I need when things go awry. I didn't see -- some good tarpaulin/heavy cloth or canvas is useful. I use rechargeable lights almost exclusively, and I have a small but decent stash of rechargeable tools I can charge with my solar power plants. Also, a 12-volt car-style fridge uses much less power than a conventional household fridge, and they aren't very expensive. I have a small gas generator (a 1400-watt Heomati) mainly to charge the solar generators in the event it is overcast for days. It's very economical and uses only a pittance of gasoline. I have one 300-watt solar power plant for small appliances, an older 800-watt, and a large Bluetti that is my main workhorse. I'm guessing you have a solar shower. Staying clean and reasonably hygienic matters a lot. On that note, a black hose in the sun can get very hot, even in cooler temperatures. The max I've been without power was 17 days and I've had no water for 22 days. In summer, I regularly experience power outages for up to a week. I've learned a lot about my particular needs. It doesn't hurt to do a trial run and cut power to your house for a few days to test out what you've got and how it all works. You'll learn a lot, probably organize differently, and be able to fill in the gaps that are pertinent to your situation. Keep one bin with your top go-to items. Some food, water, and basics. Having everything neatly organized is less important than having a go-to box of top needs to give yourself a little time to think through what comes next. Edited to add some clarification and correct two grammar errors. (Sorry this is long -- I have a lot of experience.)

Interesting video - as you point out, everyone involved kind of knew the invasion would have been a lot of effort for not much real gain, and the impact of it being unsuccessful was probably much worse than not trying. Again, effective siege would probably have been a much easier route to get Britain back to the negotiating table. One “what if” you didn’t touch on was the Nazi nuclear programme - if that had been successful then London would have been a “great” target, much like Nagasaki and Hiroshima were, to prevent the huge anticipated cost associated with taking the Japanese islands.
