I love how the director gave us pride and prejudice and said “hey, that was nice. Time to make the most heart wrenching movie ever now…” 😂

Interesting ideas! If Robbie hadn't gone to prison, he probably would've become a doctor and therefore been a medic or doctor in the war. He still could've been at Dunkirk and killed (lots of soldiers were) but at least he and Cici would've had 4 years together.

This movie is especially impressive for how the original novel is set up so strongly as a story that could only work in that particular format, in which we're literally meant to be reading Briony's book where she reveals the whole truth at the end. And Joe Wright somehow manages to make it work as a movie.

I hope more reactors react to this movie, This movie has impressive storytelling techniques, score and cinematography. The meta elements on storytelling itself is just an icing on the cake. Those time jumps are such a big whiplash. And that ending!!!

I strongly recommend two other movies directed by Joe Wright, both also starring Keira Knightley: Pride & Prejudice, and Anna Karenina. These are two of my favorite movies, brilliantly directed.

Masterpiece film! Definitely in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Although Briony was about 13 & technically a kid, I still blame her and loathe her character. She was so egocentric from child to adult. I truly believe she knew Robbie didn’t commit that crime. I think she was jealous of her sister cause he loved her. Briony was always trying to get his attention. Even her “act of kindness” is bs to me. It’s a selfish act to try to make herself feel better right before she dies. What she did could never be forgiven or bring them back or give them the happiness they deserved. That being said Saoirse Ronin is phenomenal and was nominated for her 1st Oscar here. The music, sound, costumes and cinematography are outstanding.

Very good analysis. It’s also a coming of age tragedy (Briony, confused about sex, relationships and losing her sister to adulthood), compounded by the poison of the British class system. And totally, telling the truth would have been the real compassion, the fiction she writes is to make herself feel better about the massive betrayal and carnage she caused

I've only been able to watch this movie all the way through the 1st time. I cried so much after that watch that I can't bring myself to go through it again, even though it's a GREAT movie! I know it's based on a book, but due to the depressing ending of the movie, I also can't bring myself to read the book.

I walk often walk the footpath close to the Coast Guard cottages at Cuckmere Haven, East Sussex, shown in the last scenes of the film, but sadly they are slipping into the sea. A sombre footnote to the film.

A truly devastating movie, and book. Real literature, real cinema. Heartbreaking. But then the vileness of British high society marries very well with the horror of war. Both destroy lives
@ehilton96

The British aristocracy lost many of its members fighting in both wars. Unlike the rich of many countries they stood and fought with their fellow citizens. That is not an act of vileness.

This movie was overshadowed upin release by There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. All three from novels, two of them contemporary, and all three just fantastic filmmaking all around. This film is still every bit their equal. I saw each of them 4 times each in the theater, and each made me read their respective novels. No Country and Atonement are just incredible adaptations. This one has fallen through the cracks of time, and ought to be much more popular with the reactors, especially with the shock ending.

If you are looking for a movie that no one has reacted to, but will knock your socks off... SYBIL was a 3.5 hour made-for-tv movie which swept the nation and was so popular, it was then re-edited for theatrical release. Later it was released on vhs in both lengths. Then the original was re-edited again for a DVD release. And now you can stream it. The only thing I can add is it stars Sally Fields, nowadays known for playing Forrest Gump's mother. And it would be classified as Psychological-Thriller. If you poll anyone over 40, they'll say it's a must watch.

Very good reaction/analysis. Fun fact: atonement is never once mentioned in the Bible. It is a doctrine of the medieval church (a controversial one at that, with no single agreed upon theory).

Firstly I'll say that I won't watch due to the fact that when I saw it opening weekend, I felt many were highly misled by the trailer thinking this movie was a WW2 Romance, when it wasn't. This movie was SO much of turmoil, deceit, so mach going badly through a few ppls choices. This was the first movie I remember ever seeing B.Cumberbatch in, and I really HATED him due to his scummy Pedophile character!!😡😡 When I left that theater, I felt like I needed to wash the dispair and sadness off of me. 😑 When it finally came to Tv, I thought- maybe I missed something, maybe I needed to try watching it again, for clairity. But nooope, I still hated this movie and all the BS that went down in it. 😞😣
