The problem with this theory is that you will catch grass and weeds on the hook, even if the hook doesn’t snag. Notwithstanding that fish are attracted to lures with streamers feathers, etc., they will not bite a lure that has vegetation hanging from it. A friend of mine and I noted that in over half a century combined angling experience between us, we’ve never once caught a fish on a lure that had vegetation hanging from it.

Makes total sense Steve! Thanks pal!

I would have never thought of doing something like this Steve. It makes a lot of sense though to have that lure stuck in the top of the grass and shaking it. I'm adding that to my arsenal for sure. Great Video.

100%, a week ago I went pike fishing but didn't have a single bite. What I did notice was that panfish were feeding on insects on the weeds and pike were feeding on those panfish, but the other (less accessible) side of the lake was less pressured and all the pike went there, I could clearly see them feeding on panfish on that side but no activity on the side I was at.

I started doing this last year with a small swimbait! Worked flawlessly almost every cast.

It is so fun when you pull it from that grass and you feel that rod load up!

Hey, Steve, pray u are well and that u have a great weekend. I never fear throwing into vegetation if I can find it. We have mostly willow grass. Be safe and great video

My home lake has almost no grass right now from all the weed spraying going on. When they let it grow the fishing is so much better and way more fun. Have a terrific weekend and hope you get some time to wet a line!

That's a really great technique! Sometimes it really pays the let the hook be exposed in and around vegetation. Something like a weightless wacky rig is great for work the tops of those underwater plants, but I might switch to a neko or something similar if I feel the bass are a bit deeper. Another great video!

I just got back in from filming and most of the life was sitting in that 22-24 ft range. There was barely anything shallower that than but we have had blue bird days all week and it warmed back up some. Some of the panfish schools were huge offshore.

Kinda depends on what type of vegetation you're up against, how dense or sparce. A fish is less likely to grab your bait when it's dragging around a leaf or large piece of grass / vegetation from my experience. Yes you can pop it free, but something almost always gets snagged on the hook barb. It can be too frustrating for me. I'd rather just rig the bait weedless. You can still get hung and pop it loose, just avoiding dragging something around on the hook.
@christopherrogers47342 ай бұрын
Agreed. Most of the grass in the lakes I fish is milfoil/coontail-type stuff. It doesn’t come off after you get hung in it.

I texas rig my chatterbaits or use light wires plus 25lb braid.
@darrellgrant7615Ай бұрын
I’ve had a ton of success doing the same technique using a short arm spinnerbait. I use braided line and use it around milfoil patches. I reel it directly into the milfoil and then pop it through. Every time I get a bite it’s from popping it free. They demolish it too.

I’m driving for work so I had the phone up on the magnet and was kind of only side eyeing the video as I listened haha. It looked like you had a jig and removed the skirt and put a worm on. I rewound it and didn’t see that but still the idea seems like it could fit in the same category. I’m going to try it this weekend 😁
@SteveRogersOutdoors2 ай бұрын
Good luck! This video had a Ned rig and then a Shaky head rigged backwards in it - but a jig without the skirt would work well!

I do this walleye fishing in the Ohio River and get hung up on very strong weeds hard to break loose. I get the thought process though.

Great video! I know I’ve been too scared to do this, lol! What would you recommend as a minimum pound test line when doing this? My finesse rod has 10 pound braid, and anywhere from a 6 to 12 pound fluoro/mono leader. Thanks.

That should work great.

I wish they I could find a Ned rig with a little longer and definitely heavier hooks!
@erniebrightfishing2 ай бұрын
I wanted the same. What I did was found some shaky head hook and used them. But zman does make some hooks with a longer shank designes for the ticklers and big trd. They come in the same package as the regular neds. Hope this helps you.
@tsalibuchert31562 ай бұрын
I like the Picasso rhino head ones. Longer and strong hooks. My goto ned head.
@CS-wp5dzАй бұрын
Z man makes huge hooks and also heavy weights if desired for Ned rig. You could use a 7” senko with the hooks. I think all the way up to 4/0 or 5/0 hook. Bass pro has tons of them
@seancline8130Ай бұрын
you can do the same thing rigged weedless and you won't be pulling grass of your hook as much. either way works great at triggering fish though.
@robertbrost77772 ай бұрын
I always use an open hook with my Ned Rig. I will trade the number of fish I'll lose by burying the hook for cleaning a little grass off my lure. BTW, ever try burying a hook into Elaztech? You have to bury it so deep, that hook point will rarely ever come out and, you'll miss 90% of your hookups. Most of the grass that I pick up isn't on the hook anyway, it's at the hook EYE! That's what grabs all of the grass at my place. LOL
@SteveRogersOutdoors2 ай бұрын
The Elaztech can be tough to rig for sure!
@TAK-11272 ай бұрын
So I’m guessing you keep your drag fairly tight and once you get that bite you back it off slightly.
@SteveRogersOutdoors2 ай бұрын
I do keep it a little tighter.
