It's been confusing watching all the carnage, we are finishing up a record year at our little shop. We do focus on used which makes us different, but still....and with the distributors, totally agree. The pricing through QBP is marginally better than Amazon these days, we really just charge for the labor rather than the part.

What I want to know is whether these products are chemically safe - do the metal parts have 50x the safe levels of lead (like Temu jewellery), or massive amounts of PFAS chemicals (like Temu clothes). Tyre levers and chainring bolts are hard to mess up, but do we know if they are covered in chemicals that harm us?

Excuse my rambling but I LOVE Kona bikes... the frame designs, ride quality, colors, subtle graphics in incredible attention to detail not many major brands do anymore or ever did in the first place... from the subtle graphics on the handlebars to the part of the frame joining the seat stays and chain stays leading to the dropouts. Even that is designed to look cool and not generic with a subtle K in the metal work if you look closely...SO unique! I'm prior Air Force, so I truly appreciate the attention to detail all over the bike since attention to detail is a big deal in the military for good reason! Even the Kona graphics on the seat stays, top tube and underside of the down tube fade from solid black to fading dots... so impressive when other brands go bland to save money. I chose a Kona Mahuna hardtail over lauded pricier models from Trek, Marin and Specialized because it looked and handled better. My first Kona hardtail was a used Mahuna. I was SO lucky to find it at a LBS in Virginia during the pandemic. It was my introduction to the brand! I was so tired of bike hunting all over the DC area for months since a decent looking new or used mountain bike that had hydraulic brakes was SO hard to find then. It was a 2012 but looked brand new and handled better than even newer bikes from other brands I tried once bike shops were able to get inventory again. That says a lot about Kona's dialed in frame geometries! The previous owner must have had it stored in a climate controlled environment for years! There wasn't rust anywhere on it! I sold it recently in just one week because it's still a nice looking bike with a sick factory emerald green paint job plus the tan wall WTB Trail Boss tires I added and brought a brand new one in an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS "gloss plumb" purple a couple of months ago. I added a OneUp V3 dropper post, Wolf Tooth remote, Raceface Atlas flats with the stunning topographical design, silver nipples as a contrast to the black spokes and very nice black WTB rims. I also changed out the stock brakes for the Shimano 401/410 set with snappy feeling levers and calibers that stop the bike on a dime!! EVERYWHERE I go people are like "Nice looking bike!" I won't ride anything else and I have test ridden many brands as a hobby.

The KONA brand is still alive.............The original owners / partners/true bikers, bought the KONA bike brand back this year 2024 and have vowed to return the brand back to full production and to rehire any and all past employees back, should they desire......I will never part with my Kona 134 DL, still one of the best overall trail bikes around and all SRAM and Shimano parts and group sets are readily available..............All KONA needs to do is stick with what they do best (MTBs and a few pavement bike) and forget the 35-40 different styles of bikes they were offering...............just saying....btw it will be interesting to see what bikes will be coming off the new production line, hopefully soon.

The biggest problem with e bike riders is young people that have no fear and no concept of bike rules of the road, mandatory helmets for all including scooters, no one under 16 can operate an e bike with out some sort of safety course and written and driven test, and kids on scooters need to follow the rules of the road.

When i lived in Denver, about 20 years ago, I found an Ace hardware with a little bike shop in back. They didn't stock much, but it seemed like they would order ANYTHING for me. I miss that place.

F e-bikes. I won't go E until I can't pedal and I'm 55 now. Too much weight, too much tech, too much crap to go wrong. I fully support older adults and people with disabilities using e-bikes but for the rest of us, PEDAL IT. In my mind, a bike should be a simple and fun means of transportation that benefits both you and environment - basically the opposite of e-bikes. Where will all of these Chinese-made junky e-bikes and their batteries be in the coming years/decades? Right. In the garbage. They are NOT built to last or service. Like so much more these days, they are built to be disposable. Rivendell Bikes has the right idea. Their philosophy towards bikes is where the industry needs to be. Simple, practical bikes that can be used for many different things. They are built to last with good, simple tech that ANY LBS and most home wrenches can work with. Buy a good chromoly bike with quality parts and chances are, with reasonable care, it may be the last bike you ever buy e.g. Surly, Rivendell, Crust. Even the big guys e.g. Trek have moved away from steel (520) in favour of more and more plastic (e.g. carbon fibre).

As a Giant Concept store owner, I'm glad to be out of the business. The very last thing Giant did to all its dealers is discounted their bikes by 30-40% online. Well, what does that mean to the store owner ZERO sales profits for the next year, as we sell through our inventory. Goodbye Giant and JT

The bike business is a manufacturer, in name only, standing in line at the generic Taiwan factories waiting for their bikes to be built. Then shipping their order to a bike shop who needs to pay the light bill, the landlord, and loads of workman's comp. China decided they would just ship to your doorstep and ask you to find a shop to assemble your purchase. What will survive is a bike mechanic with an Amazon account; not the bike business.

Built a custom Stumpjumper Pro with half the parts from TPC (other half from Jenson). Didn't know much about them, but I drove up to Louisville to return a pair of shoes that didn't fit. Was blown away by how big their facility was. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to turn a bike shop into a big box store? They were bound to fail with an industry downturn. Which seemed kind of inevitable considering everyone and their brother bought a mountain bike in 2020-2021. Bike shops need servicing to stay afloat and I doubt many people traveled from Boulder or Denver for maintenance.

Pretty consistent with upper management that doesn’t have any interest in the industry they take over for it to fail, lots of “education” but no understanding of the culture. They think its a cash cow but think they can do it better and it fails

The used bike market is a brutal place to be in business. With product cycles so short with manufacturers used bikes depreciate like a mfucka. Must be tough on the balance sheet when every couple months you have to steeply discount the value of your unsold inventory
