I've definitely used gorilla tape but it leaves residue all over the rim which can be a pain and I'd guess it's twice as heavy as rim tape. Flex tape will seal your tire but after a short time it'll dimple into the spoke holes and make seating the next tire close to impossible. At that price it's better to just use regular rim take, it's best attribute is that it's the stiffest of all those options so the bed of the rim stays the most consistent for multiple tire changes.

I have used Gorilla tape and it works; however, I believe it allows sealant to weep through the tape and corrodes spoke nipples. Will not be an issue for the first couple of years, but you may find after a few years the corroded nipples are breaking and your spokes / wheels are trash.

I set up a long term test wheel and will watch out for this, I appreciate the heads up! I’ve also been looking at certain chemicals in sealant that react badly with aluminum over time, there are quite a few in the market that use things that are not good on alum long term.

Why stop at Gorilla tape or Flex Seal tape? Why not try electrical tape? As for the valve, why not just cut out a valve from an old tube? I’m sure any of those methods will work and if you feel comfortable with that set up ripping down step trails, go for it! Personally I’d rather just get the branded tape, the valves and use tubeless ready tires on tubeless rims. As for valves leaking, I have made silicone O rings that I insert as an inside washer. This help if the shape of the value doesn’t fit snugly in the rim/tape interface.

I don't understand what's expensive here. Most bikes come with tubeless tape installed and, if not, I've got a perfectly fine pre-cut tape that just slides over the rim for like 10 dollars total. Valves are around 12 bucks a pair giving you somewhere in the vicinity of 30 dollars per bike with sealant. I don't think it's such a ridiculous amount considering the prices of bikes or the fact that simple suspension service costs around a hundred. And that said I've been running inner tubes for over a decade with numerous complaints, constantly getting pinch flats and stuff, which is vastly more expensive.

I’ve used gorilla tape and it works as does any duct tape but gorilla Tape is worse because it make putting tire on and taking off very hard also after time the gorilla tape’s adhesive gets stuck to the rim. There’s a reason for rim specific tape.

@@evo1cycling I had a wheel I used gorilla tape on when it came time to take off tire I had to cut it off. That defeats the purpose of if your on a trail and get a flat and have to put a tube in and can’t get the tire off to do it. In theory gorilla tape sounds good because it’s cheap. Remember sometimes you get what you pay for.🤔👍

The non tubeless skinwall tire would probably have been able to seat with another layer or two of Gorilla tape. The biggest advantage of going ghetto tubeless with Gorilla tape is that it's thick enough to take up some of the space that you found leaks so much air because the bead isn't tight enough to the rim. I've had some ghetto tubeless setups last the life of the tire without problem.

That's the nature tubeless tyres, you have to always keep pumping up, especially if you don't ride them for a few days, that's why many prefer to run tubes, you can leave the bike for a month, and the tyres are still pumped and ready to go.
@evo1cycling
@evo1cycling 6 ай бұрын
I’ve had some tires that are just always slowly leaking, mostly with certain brands. Weather can play a factor but not so much that you would only get a week out of them. Maybe it’s worth it to make a tubeless inspection/diagnosis video?

@dheath3697 6 ай бұрын
So you're saying some tubeless set ups don't lose air pressure if you don't ride them for a while? Either way, it would make a good video, I don't see this aspect discussed a lot.
@evo1cycling

A video maybe doing tubeless a few ways over a set time period with some UV dye in the sealant to locate the leaks and see which tires lose the most pressure? Even in a perfect scenario we have to wonder where the air goes, cars are tubeless and can sit for years.

so basically you're showing people a system that some of us have been using for over 20 years with either stans rim tape or electrical tape & a bit of liquid latex & also with standard tyres. I always remove the core add a bit of water & liquid soap to the rim (the bubbles help seal up any air escaping & help the tyre seat into the rim. once that's done add the sealant that way refit the core & re-inflate with the valve towards the top (I've also found that flattening the tyre slightly over the valve helps with seating the beads)Shake the tyre side to side to get the sealant onto the side walls & then take the bike for a quick spin.

What a frigging mess.... Why don't you mount the tyre, remove the valve core and inflate the tyre and seat it on the rim, then add the sealant down the valve using a silicone tube from the bottle, replace the core and inflate it... That pouring it in the side and hoping for the best that it won't blow out everywhere is plain stupid and messy/wasteful.... And to distribute it put the wheel on the floor and spin it like a spinning top on both sides trying to get an oscillation/wobble going....

@@evo1cycling I'm a bike mechanic, trust me this works- big tyres like gravel/mtb are never usually an issue, narrow road ones are far trickier and will often pop back off the seating(road tyres are usually way flimsier due to weight minimisation), best with them once inflated on the rim to let the air out as gently as possible, get the sealant and valve in, and inflated as quickly as you can !! (and as usual, any mis-shapen tyres or problem ones stick a tube in and inflate and leave overnight, then only disturb one side removing the tube and getting the tubeless valve back in)
@jasiuevil
@jasiuevil 6 ай бұрын
Why people do this is beyond me. Gorilla tape is a horrible idea, some sealants can and will dissolve the glue on it and then good luck wasting hours on cleaning the residue, that is after your tyre starts leaking 30 miles from home when you least expect it. If you want to do ghetto tubeless, all you need is a thinner stripe of PCV tape just over the nipple holes and electrical tape, preferably with an additional ghetto gasket around the valve, cause electrical tape stretches and it's always a lottery, if the valve will leak or not. Then there is the at least yearly maintenance, which I stopped bothering with, considering how much time and work it is to do this crap every time. Either tape your wheels proper, or have a shop do that for you. Or just use tubes which is preferable, unless you have issues with tight fitting rim and tyre combo. If you catch a lot of flats, thicker tubes and better tyres with puncture protection can also be a solution. Lower pressure and wheel weight is a meme. Tubeless only makes sense, if you catch a lot of flats and if it's hard or impossible to swap a tube when you're out riding, but the latter we can all attribute to tubeless ready wheels and thin as paper "lightweight" tubes. If youtubers and the industry really want to push tubeless that much, maybe start doing solutions that work, like sealant that seals and you don't have to spend hours cleaning your tyres every year, or tape that is strong and actually has some flex? Maybe popularise those nipple hole plugs that can be run over by just cheap electric tape? Or maybe go back to wheels, tyres and tubes we actually had years ago that worked and were easy to maintain?

I love tubes myself for most of my daily riding, but I have seen some “get home” advantages in certain scenarios with tubeless. I’m still not 100% sold because if you bust the sidewall open it’s done unlike a tube where you could limp it home. Plus having to have a lot of air to get the tire to seat on tubeless is a PITA.
