Thank you! As a starter I began with “standard” synthetic round brushes, and the Hahnmuhle cotton watercolour sketchbooks. I still use the same sketchbooks but I have over time started using quill brushes 99% of the time, may favourite ones are the synthetic quill brushes from Raphael. I never purchase natural hair brushes, ever, because the animal cruelty involved is not something I will ever pay for. A lot of my current favourite supplies you can see in my art haul video, which was my first ever video - you can easily find it on my channel. Also, I will make a video in the future about my favourite supplies, that sounds like a fun idea! 👍🫶

Dot from the UK Wow, what a fabulous sketchbook and your first, you must be very proud of it and of yourself too, it is so beautiful. I would love to see all of your other sketchbooks as well. You certainly have a talent with watercolor. I have struggled for many years with watercolors, but recently bought a big set of Kuretake Gansi Tambi, cost a lot of money but at 73 I can't take it with me, so I'm more determined than ever to paint something I can be proud of, you have given me hope and lots of ideas. So, thank you for that and for sharing, I loved all your colors and subject matter. I'm going to see if you have anything else on You tube, and watch this delightful video again. Fish. It was brave of you to share your first sketchbook, thanks so much. I enjoyed it very much, especially seeing the way you created stories in your pages with your fish and birds and other quirky elements. That's so much more creative than just putting blobs of paint down on the paper. In an earlier video you talked about using your Daniel Smith dot cards, where you created small pieces of art with with each colour rather than just swatching them. I also have the complete set of DS dot cards and I love this idea - I haven't touched them yet because I'm scared of "wasting" them. I would really appreciate it if at some time in the future you could make a video about this. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your support and for writing to me 💙🐠 and yes, this is true, I was a bit obsessive and sketched with every single one of those 238 Daniel Smith colours 😂 I’ll be filming that in the next few weeks (it’s sketchbooks 2 and 3 😉). It took me 9 months lol, but it’s also a great way of getting to know the paints. Don’t be afraid of “wasting” your paint dots - whatever you do with will teach more than if you don’t touch them! It’s never a waste. I hope you go have a play and enjoy them! PS. The duochromes (like cabo blue, emerald and autumn mystery) are SO MUCH FUN to play with, especially for painting things like seashells and sea urchins!😉🫶

I enjoyed your tour of your first sketchbook! As one who is in the beginning stages of learning the watercolour medium it’s fun to see and know others are beginning and growing their skills as well. I am on the search of a sketchbook I want to commit to. Today I opened a Kolo 100% cotton sketchbook. It has 28 pages 300gsm. I have an Arches travel sketchbook, a small Etchr, and I just purchased a Baohong 100% cold press sketchbook. Not really sure why I continue searching, sometimes size is an issue, also I think I can be reluctant wanting too much perfection due to cost of the sketchbook.

It’s so exciting hearing that you are also on a watercolour journey - and you sound like me, I also have quite a collection of sketchbooks 😅 (I even have a haul video and another comparison video for my sketchbooks). I’ve found lately that buying a “fancy” or more expensive sketchbook that I use for more finished pieces helps me keep my “everyday” sketchbook pressure-free and gives me the freedom to play and explore and make a mess. And at the end of the day, that’s what sketchbooks should be: fun and exploratory! 🫶

Hello Cherry, 🙋🏼‍♀️ from Cookeville, Tennessee…100 miles west of Knoxville and 100 miles east of Nashville Art Stores! We don’t 😢have and art stores here. So I mostly buy on line or take a few road trips.😊🚗💨I’m 73, retired and enjoying my revived artist life. I’m so glad I found your channel on KZbin. You have such a wonderful soft voice I immediately thought of Bob Ross, most celebrated artist of my younger life and still is. Unlike Bob, you didn’t put me to sleep 🤭😴 I had to videotape his shows so I could finish watching them. I love you are in Switzerland! My father’s great grandparents moved to the US from Berne, Switzerland. I don’t have much history, I do know Francis was the name shared by the men and it changed to Frank in the states. I’m female and named Frances. 😊 A wonderful first video and I can’t wait to read the next ones! I prefer longer videos but also enjoy short ones when time isn’t available. I enjoy a lot of the same products. As a Pen & Ink artist, wanting to add colors, I found Inktense and fell in love with it. I have some wonderful colored pencils and a few watercolor paints. I have used Strathmore paper as a first choice for over 60 years. I love drawing miniatures and found Stonehenge cotton minis, perfect for miniature art work. It’s wonderful paper and see if you can access their website. You can get some wonderful deals. I loved Crayola crayons growing up and then appeared Caran d’Ache Neocolor II 🫠. I was very good and started small and then went back to get a couple of more and I heard myself justifying buying the 84 set, it was back ordered 🤭I started looking for the colors that were discontinued from the 126 set, thus creating the 84 set. A wonderful woman in Switzerland, in a town 30 mins from Berne, selling in the box new 126 set! I ordered it. I was going to cancel the back ordered 84 set, but it was already on the way. I now have enough stock in Caran d’Ache to be a voting me.🤣I do love these beautiful pastels! To keep from having marks / lines on your artwork, the CREATIVE ART MATERIALS Caran D'ache Palette Aquarelle it’s a plastic palette with a smooth finish and a rough finish. It’s great to create a palette of colors to paint with without creating lines on the artwork. Check your plastic cutting sheets for a rough side and that would work also. I do like your 😊Etcher sketchbooks and the price is very reasonable. The foundation of a great work of art is the paper! Artist usually discover that just like you did and you fell for watercolor pencils. 😌 😮I’m sorry, I talk too much! I’m happy to meet you and I look forward to getting to know you. The comments from the audience are wonderful and you deserve every one. If anyone makes ugly comments just delete them and don’t give them a passing thought. 🤗 Have a great week and better weekend with Renley ! 🐶 He’s so adorable and what a wonderful studio assistant. Please don’t send him away, if you don’t have to, he might get sad and cry. I have found my pets are my best friends when working in the studio. 🙋🏼‍♀️ Fran

Also, thank you for the huge compliment of comparing me to Bob Ross, that’s very generous lol! It’s lovely that you’re named after your ancestors and that you have roots going back to Bern, which is a very beautiful part of Switzerland. Have you ever visited it? As you’ll see in my swatching video, I fell in LOVE with the inktense pencils and now want to order a dozen more of them 😅 and the neocolor II are also brilliant, so convenient for travel too. It’s been great discovering them and I’d love to hear tips on how you are using them! Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to write such an interesting and thoughtful comment, I truly appreciate, as does Renley. Thank you for sharing such a great video with helpful insights in your painting journey! I too find the urban sketching intimidating and uncomfortable. I like the ideas others gave below which I will try as well. I wanted to recommend artist Karen Rice to you for inspirational videos. You mentioned the book you like that the artist did messy but beautiful work. This lady makes beautiful and exciting work approachable. She breaks the work done to start it with using thicker paint, water and even an old credit card. What I love to see is her nature scenes! I used to be against animal hair brushes, but synthetic brushes are often made of plastic derivatives and other materials that are not good for the environment or people. Some animals are humanely raised and some small brush companies use recycled hair and hair that is harvested without killing animals.
@TheCherrypipangel
@TheCherrypipangel 7 күн бұрын
I agree that we live in a plastic world and there is not much we can do about that. I was also lulled by this idea of small farms and humanely harvested animal hair - but from the research I’ve done, this seems to be propaganda since it is not economically viable for anyone. And ultimately, even if it is true - is captivity in cages even ever humane? 🤔

@@TheCherrypipangel There is no perfect solution but small companies such as e.g., in the U.S., Lebenzon brushes use recycled and humanely sourced animal hair, some of which is a by-product of other uses rather than from captive animals. He uses some unusual hairs like elk

Perhaps the best way to describe the difference between Luminance and Polychromos pencils is to compare them to gouache and watercolor. Luminance definitely has the quality of gouache with an immediate opaque coverage that causes the color to pop. Polychromos have a more transparent quality like watercolor and are best applied in layers. A color pencil artist on KZbin called Lachri Fine Art has done several videos over the years describing the different qualities and why she uses both in her practice. If I could only pick one, it would be Polychromos. Though it takes more work to layer the colors, Luminance feels chalky to me in a way that I haven't gotten used to but am trying to learn to tolerate. Also, I love the color match system of Faber Castell products. However, I think one of the greatest advantages of the Luminance line is they provide pigment information as does the Derwent Lightfast line. I find that I prefer the Derwent Lightfast over the Luminance pencils because, to me, they have a smoother application compared to Luminance. Nevertheless, both lines offer a beautiful color range with hues unique to each, so I have a collection that I've built by purchasing open stock from both lines. But if you prefer a pencil that feels like a gouache and you don't need a lightfast pencil, nothing beats a Prismacolor. They are the Sennelier oil pastel of pencils, creamy and opaque.

party - i love swatches. I have a large selection of Derwent Inktense, both in pencil and block. I do love them. I also have a set of Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils. They are good, but the Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelles are better. I have a small selection of them. I recently purchased a few of the Neocolor II crayons. I like them, but they are more opaque than I am accustomed to - quite similar to gouache. I have been experimenting with several brands of coloured pencils, a few at a time (Derwent drawing pencils and Derwent Lightfast as well as some Luminance and Holbein).

I love the lamp! It would be nice if you turned the music down several decibels because it drowns out your voice when you're creating, so I didn't hear 65% of your words.

Thanks for letting me know, and I’m so sorry about that! I haven’t actually put music into the video but it may be the music from the neighbours while I was filming… I will be more mindful of the environnement next time! 💙🫶

I love hearing which supply appeals to you! And luminance has been such an eye opener for me, I can’t seem to put them down anymore and find myself always reaching for one even just for doodling! 🫶
