I am so very impressed. As a beginner, I find this so inspiring. Your color wheel made me smile as I am still at the “laying down way too much pigment” stage. I hope to be able to progress like you have. I love it when you paint in a more loose style. Fish.

Such beautiful spreads and development. Fish. It was brave of you to share your first sketchbook, thanks so much. I enjoyed it very much, especially seeing the way you created stories in your pages with your fish and birds and other quirky elements. That's so much more creative than just putting blobs of paint down on the paper. In an earlier video you talked about using your Daniel Smith dot cards, where you created small pieces of art with with each colour rather than just swatching them. I also have the complete set of DS dot cards and I love this idea - I haven't touched them yet because I'm scared of "wasting" them. I would really appreciate it if at some time in the future you could make a video about this. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your support and for writing to me 💙🐠 and yes, this is true, I was a bit obsessive and sketched with every single one of those 238 Daniel Smith colours 😂 I’ll be filming that in the next few weeks (it’s sketchbooks 2 and 3 😉). It took me 9 months lol, but it’s also a great way of getting to know the paints. Don’t be afraid of “wasting” your paint dots - whatever you do with will teach more than if you don’t touch them! It’s never a waste. I hope you go have a play and enjoy them! PS. The duochromes (like cabo blue, emerald and autumn mystery) are SO MUCH FUN to play with, especially for painting things like seashells and sea urchins!😉🫶

Love seeing this. It's so funny because blue is a shade that I rarely reach for unless a subject absolutely calls for it (unless it's indigo, which I love). You have so much natural artistic talent--and seeing your progress through your studies really makes me want to focus on a strong intention when I sit down to paint. I usually just sit down and either work with a tutorial I have saved and intrigues me that day, or just completely throw caution to the wind and dive in (and usually find that I'm dismayed in the result). FISH!

First of all: Thank you! And yassss that you love indigo too ☺️! And wow so much praise, I’m overwhelmed lol! You sound very bold and enterprising and that probably shows up in your work, there is also a lot of freedom in just throwing caution to the wind! I’ve also had to work quite hard at maintaining some structure/disciple during the first year, but I can reassure you, by now I’m far less disciplined and my latest sketchbooks is a mix of fire breathing kittens (yep, I’m in the phase), autumn landscapes, abstract puddles, and classical statues… it’s chaos 😂🤣 And I think phases of both structure and chaos are good for growth. Let me know what intention you end up choosing and how you progress! 🐠💙🫶🥰

I'm only a few minutes in and i had to pause to write this. i've had watercolours in my arsenal for something like 7 or 8 years now. apart from a couple of disastrous paintings, i've only ever used them to create marks in abstract mixed media art, or to do swatches because i love colour. i really want to learn how to paint but part of the problem is i'm so intimidated by what i see on social media. unfortunately, my entire watercolour learning journey has been through social media, so although i've learned a ton about pigment, qualities of paints and how they behave, even different techniques that i've dabbled in but rarely used to to make paintings, i've never taken the plunge into painting. i've never done a colour theory course or anything else. i see other people's sketchbooks and they're gorgeous and they make me want to learn how to paint, but they don't make me want to paint. they intimidate me. i already know that watercolour is challenging because i've worked with it in different ways and part of the reason i keep it to abstract and mixed media stuff is because it takes the pressure off of trying to get the paint to behave in certain ways, which is the part that intimidates me. but looking at your sketchbooks is the opposite: it makes me want to actually paint because i've seen what a beginner sketchbook looks like and it's almost exactly how mine looks. i wish there was more stuff on beginner's sketchbooks because this stuff is so encouraging. also, i just want to echo what someone else said here, this is not embarrassing at all. this is a new painter getting to know the paints. even if you layered it on like gouache, you were still picking up your materials and using them. you say in this video you've been painting now for about 2 years. those initial experiments, however embarrassing they might seem now, are what laid the foundation for the last two years of painting. i think that's fantastic. i'm excited to see the rest of your videos. :)
@TheCherrypipangel3 ай бұрын
Hi and thank you for this wonderful comment. This is one of the nicest things you could say about my videos and it’s the reason I share my sketchbooks as a beginner: Because when I started out for the first time I couldn’t find anyone else sharing their absolute beginning sketchbooks either and I had no idea what to expect or how to progress! And this was my sentiment exactly, I also wished more beginners shared their work, I find it encouraging too 🫶 And just like you, social media is beautiful but overwhelming and the talented artists I see made me dream of learning art but never showed me things I felt like I could also take on or paint myself. And hearing you say that this video makes you want to paint is the best thing I could ever hear. I love the thought that you are wanting to pick up your watercolors and work on them. Please let me know how it goes! 🫶

@@TheCherrypipangel I've only ever wanted to be an artist, so now in my 40s i'm redirecting my energy and pursuing a professional art practice. I have no idea what that will look like, but I imagine that a social media presence (likely KZbin and Instagram) will be part of it. stumbling upon your videos has given me the thought that maybe I can start my KZbin presence from the ground up - as a beginner developing my skills in watercolor - rather than waiting to get "good" and then showing my work. I don't know if I will film it as I go or do as you've done, saving those beginner sketchbooks and paintings to show them later. I'll keep thinking about it.

Thank you but I can’t claim full credit - I did have the guidance of a very solid course from Laura McKendry on Domestika, and my work still feels very awkward and amateur to me. I think we are our own worst critics. And there are many moments when it feels like “one step forward, 2 steps back”… and often everyone else’s work looks impressive instead. As long as you just keep exploring and playing, you are progressing and I think everyone still struggles, at every level. I just keep reminding myself that I do this for FUN - because I tend to forget and become too serious. But to keep finding the fun is my best advice 💙🫶

I am on the search of a sketchbook I want to commit to. Today I opened a Kolo 100% cotton sketchbook. It has 28 pages 300gsm. I have an Arches travel sketchbook, a small Etchr, and I just purchased a Baohong 100% cold press sketchbook. Not really sure why I continue searching, sometimes size is an issue, also I think I can be reluctant wanting too much perfection due to cost of the sketchbook.
