Do you still have the FT-817 ? I got the 818 around 3 weeks ago and I like it a lot, been having a lot of fun with it and the DL1DN whip and the MFJ-9232 loop tuner. Thinking about getting Lithium battery for it. I really like the form factor and being able to hang it from my neck via the supplied strap and walk around with the whip antenna. I hope if Yaesu come out with a new QRP radio that it's not a SDR with big screen, this 818 is really rugged, but everyone seems to want the screen these days, I like to keep things simple + not everyone can afford 1500 Euro for a QRP radio and like me, many People just might like a basic simple radio for HF only. I thought about getting the Xiegu X5105, I had it before and really liked the internal battery but I like the 818 a lot more, I don't use a tuner portable anyway. The X6100 seems to be a noisy radio, don't like the audio from the videos I've seen and I don't care for SDR for a QRP rig at all, in fact, the Elecraft Kx2 would be my perfect radio if I could have got one.

@o00scorpion00o Жыл бұрын
Did you use an external speaker or headphones, A radios internal speaker is usually never good. I always use headphones. I find that using contour and notch can really make the audio good, at least on the 891 and FTDX-10, the FTDX-10 has some amazing audio and receiver compared to my old 7300 which is gone now and I don't miss it, the audio was harsh and tiring to listen to and I needed NR on all the time, don't need DNR on the 891 or FTDX-10 it sounds so good. I have a 450D coming now and will sell the 891 just because I want a radio with better ergonomics with more buttons as I don't do much portable ops now since I no longer work shift and don't have as many days off. The 891 has a terrific receiver though and audio, in fact, had it not been for the 891 I'd not be any the wiser as to the bad audio from the 7300. I can still take the 450D with me if I work portable because I never work far from the car anyway.

Whats the best way to set the AWR on the Boomerang 27 A antenna? can I just measure 102 inches on the radial and lock in down with the set screw then fine tune with the bottom ground plane radial by moveing it up or down. any info would be a help.

Do you need a ham license for that rig
@guyteigh3375 Жыл бұрын
it's all a bit odd really, unless the law for "type approval" has changed, an Amateur can use the 10M frequencies on here but in the UK, a CB radio must be "approved" and locked to CB ONLY frequencies, so although an Amateur can make their own transceivers with ZERO type approval, they cannot transmit "out of band" on CB except on type-approved radios. CB users ALSO cannot transmit on non-type approved radios legally. In reality, CBers sticking to CB frequencies are unlikely to have problems, Amaterurs operating on both CB and Ham bands are unlikely to have issues.

Nice video. Just to confirm that efhw do not NEED an earth rod or similar. Just a counterpoise a length of 1/20th of the lowest band is fine or that same length of coax from the transformer before a common mode choke. 73
@radiosonic00073 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, yes, I have an RF choke. The antenna is the shortened version, about 23 meters. Seems to work very well indeed, just wish I bought one sooner. The only band I don't have is 17m, but I build one today. My next project is putting the hustler back up. Will have to look around for wire on the internet, as the hustler likes lots of radials. 73

Hello Christopher, I use a Half size G5RV and a long wire. I will be reviewing a new antenna in my next video Multi-band end-fed antenna with mounting bracket 80/40/20/15/10m shortened from UK antennas. Not a great time here as bands haven't been that good. For portable, I use a sotabeam band hopper 3 dipole antenna it's linked, and I have had great results out portable 73

@@radiosonic0007 Looking forward to your end fed video thanks.

Christopher, with any lower power radio, you want your antenna to be as efficient as possible. I have talked to South America on a Buddistick on a tripod in my yard. However, my best contacts have been on my Par EndFedz. You easily get the entire band. You can get the SWR close to 1:1 and R to 50. For field portable, RG-58 works fine and takes up less space and weight. Some people even use RG-174 for short runs at low frequencies; especially SOTA types. Others may have great luck with many field antennas, but EFs work great for me. Plus, tune once and forget about it forever.

Hello Mark, You're going to enjoy using the Xiegu G90 great little Radio and the ATU works a treat. My antennas at home are Hustler btv-6 and long wire I use on top band and a beam. Portable I use a sotabeam dipole, it covers 20m 30m 40m. But I have build one for 80m to 10m it's a link dipole, so I don't use the ATU. I'm going portable sometime over the weekend. Best 73

@@radiosonic0007 Good deal. I will be experimenting with antennas this summer to find the best system for the radio.
