Great video :) How did you connect the RD-9 to the computer? USB midi? I have mine synced to my DAW's clock (sync mode set to USB), and it starts/stops using my DAW's controls, but it doesn't seem to play midi notes that way. It plays the pattern that's currently loaded.. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is .. any ideas?

I like that 1978 on EDM music you play, do you think it's too much of a stretch to use it like a mastering compressor for EDM style of music? Everybody says you have to have VCA style compressor for fast paced music, but FET is not slow at all, if you want to glue things up, you have to have some "hold on time" with compressor ... :))

You could use it as a mastering comp but I think its more suitable for use across the stereo bus or sub groups. Its a decent hardware compressor buy I would recommend you make sure you really like it within the available no hassle return period. I think that's two weeks for most stores.

@@MOOTANT1 Yes, thanks, I hear what it's doing, and you don't go "full blast treshold move" in mastering, maybe max. -4 db, so if this can't handle that small amount of compression without "destroying" the mix with saturation (when no saturation is applied) than what's the point of making such a unit. :)) I will try it.

They’re getting very expensive! … I recently purchased an Eventide H10 and was quite dissappointed with its tone as it doesn’t really work for techno. I feel it’s too polished and produced, too hifi If you will. Of course for other genres it’d be just what you need but I’d say get yourself a dp4+ if you want to make classic techno.

Vox is probably not the best use of a Clipper but there is no harm in trying, If I were to use a clipper on a vocal it would be a kind of FX thing I'm looking for, or want a particular vocal really loud (for some reason).

One thing to note about usamo, is that as accurate as it is, midi still is a serial interface, so the sample accurate thing is only when sending only one event at a time (like midi clock). From the moment you send two or more events at the same time, it´s not sample accurate anymore (only the first note!). Each note on event is approx 0.9 ms, so 10 notes simultaneously gives you almost 10 ms of jitter. Usamo still is the best option though. One good way to check midi timing is recording some fast notes on a hihat or some short percussive sound, and see how aligned to the grid is. That´s a more "scientific" approach. I don`t have a 770, but I have a DJ-70 which I bought for literally 30 dollars, and I wanted to see how good the timing was. I´ll do some tests, as I also have an usamo. Cheers and thanx for the video.

Greetings Claude, I know who you are 😎 About 2 years or so after making this video I stopped using it. I found that sending midi from the PC's USB to hardware was very acceptable. I cant recall if I changed anything in my system at the time which forced a change in my opinion. The USAMO whilst it does what it says on the tin - and is accurate, it does come with irritating issues. Of course sending midi to hardware still comes with audio latency issues but I tend to use the delay track function to get around the problem and in general I'm a little less obsessive about timing. In fact, I use the track delay function on a lot of elements now pushing tracks back or forward which does make a difference to overall vibe/feel. If you're using the USAMO to send midi clock its a good choice, but for general midi notes check out the difference between standard internal USB and the USAMO. Good luck 👍

Thanks mate but i don’t get it. Someone told me: never touch the master. Your master is at -6db. Also when I make my drum group where to put the clipper? When I have my drum group at 0db it’s clipping at the master. Maybe you can help me with that please. Thx 🙏

Quote: Thanks mate but i don’t get it. Someone told me: never touch the master. Your master is at -6db Whoever told you that is misleading you. Such advice will hinder creativity and distract you from mixing. Obviously, don't push levels into the red, but don't worry if you hit 0dB. As for explaining the Clipper, I covered it all in the video. Give it another watch. Don't overanalyze what I'm saying. It's just a simple trick to boost the volume of your tracks without having to slam the master limiter too hard. Why not try the demo, play around with it, and pay attention to your level readings? For the Drum Group, it's up to you. Maybe try it before the compressor to smooth out peaks in the drum track and help the compressor work better. Or put it after if you want those drums to really punch and for that you would clip harder - and here we're in FX territory. A clipper can be used to increase the volume of a group or track, but generally, just use it to shave a couple of dB off peak volumes. In the video, pay attention to what I'm saying about the meters - the dark and light green zones indicate where most of the sound's energy is. The peaks are light green. The objective is not to get rid of the peaks, its just to reduce them a little.

It's important for me to acknowledge that I haven't been able to replicate the results achieved with this box since the day I recorded the video. Whether it was beginner's luck, a stroke of divine favour, or some alteration to the box afterwards remains uncertain. However, during that initial period of ownership, everything seemed to fall into place perfectly. What you're hearing in the video was captured within the first couple of days of acquiring it. Despite my efforts to utilize the box to its fullest extent, achieving satisfactory results in my own music required significant tweaking. It's worth noting that this unit is physically quite subtle to use in that the slightest turn of a knob can substantially alter the sound. But keep in mind such nuances are probably inherent to its design and I don't think that's a bad thing. Additionally, the context is crucial to consider; what you're hearing is generally a solitary treatment of a single sound. In the context of a full mix/song, the outcome can vary significantly. I feel compelled to mention this because I'm cautious about musicians, especially those new to the scene, rushing to purchase solely based on this video. Another issue I encountered, which I was unable to resolve, was a persistent ground loop noise that emerged shortly after the recording session. While it wasn't audible during the video production, it became increasingly noticeable, particularly when using distortion, and at times, it became very intrusive. To fix that I would have had to delve into rewiring my studio which I wasn't prepared to do just for one FX box. Eventually, I decided to part ways with it as I found myself rarely using it, and its subtle characteristics didn't align well with my personal musical style. In saying all that I still believe it's a great box and It does have lots of character capable of producing quirky interesting results. if you are prepared to spend the time tweaking it and it suits your music style. But it is not a case of process any sound and it's going to sound awesome type scenario. Lastly, I advise viewers to approach gear reviews on KZbin with a discerning eye. Reviewers will prioritize clicks and views over honesty and very few of them review gear under real-world scenarios - ie in the mix. Maintaining friendly relations with manufacturers for potential perks will influence their assessments, even if money doesn't directly change hands. But gear is gifted and can be sold. Peace😎

@@marksbitz630 Yes, It seems I could do no wrong on the day of filming.😉 To be fair I did have a few moments with it as the months went by. But the ground loop noise prevented me from using the distortion and verb and the filter alone wasn't enough for me to hold on to it.

There's a great thread on gearslutz in which one of the developers behind the Roland S series samplers chimes in and he goes into detail explaining why the S770 is the best sounding hardware sampler ever. He claims it's the only sampler where what you sample in sounds better coming out. Another note worth mentioning is that you don't need the original Roland monitor. Any monitor that has S-video should work. I have my S760 connected to an old Phillips flat screen that was lying around my dads house collecting dust.
@MOOTANT1
@MOOTANT1 6 ай бұрын
'He claims it's the only sampler where what you sample in sounds better coming out' I've never wanted to say that publicly - who would believe it.😏 But doesn't surprise me one bit. I used to use runner top loops in my tracks (still do occasionally). They were just drum loops with all the bottom end eqe'd out and 99% of the time pitched up to match the tempo of the track I was working on. Always sounded good, and always gave the track a vibey gear shifting energy. If I do the same process with any VST sampler, the vibe isn't there. Let's not forget chord hit samples & bass sounds etc. The S range playing back different pitches via one sample just has something about it. It's a cumulative effect also, One sound from an S range in a track won't make much of a difference, but half the sounds, or more coming from an S range in the track will have a vibe. If you have the link maybe you could post it.

@@MOOTANT1 That's awesome. I totally agree and it's my experience as well with other hardware samplers I've used. I'm still fairly new to the S760. There's a fun video on here by Junkie XL where he goes through his sampler collection and demonstrates the quality he gets from playing different units, same concept as here....playing different pitches of sampled notes or chords.
