The ending of this book is very devastating, Rick Riordan is a MONSTER!! Great video, I agree with everything you said there. If I have to give you one more tip, The Chalice of the Gods takes place before The Trials of Apollo so I would keep that in mind, maybe you can read The Kane Chronicles when you finish HoO, then you read this new book (The Chalice of the Gods) and then move on to Magnus Chase, The Trials of Apollo and The Sun and the Star.

I stopped reading this about 2/3-ish of the way through. I just didn't care and i was already very close to the library deadline anyway, so i DNFed it. From what you're saying, the ending sounds a kinda unhinged though. I appreciate what you said about romance books, and media in general, shaping us and the damage that the Twilight era has done. As someone who is still very young and hasn't had a single relationship in my life, that is something that i notice with myself and i try to be aware of, but that's not always easy. I didn't lik Verish (?? I only listened to the audiobook, so i don't know how to spell names. Your pronunciations were all like they were in the audiobook btw). As you said, the things he got away with makes no sense and neither do his motivations. The only thing that seemed to drive him was wanting to be evil. He was just such a cartoon villain to me. And the voice that the audiobook narrator chose for him didn't help. He sounded gross and not fullly human, which created a very weird mental image of him in my brain.

Honestly more power to you, I don't blame you at all for DNFing, this book was rough. There were just so many problems we both had with it. They just announced the next one coming out in January I'm not really confident it's going to be any better.

I'm planning to read ACOTAR this month. I read it when i was 15 and i liked it, but didn't care enough to continue, but now that i'm older (and a little more the actual target age) i want to give it a new try. I'm hopeful as i'm also currently working my way through the ToG series and i'm quite enjoying that. I really need to get back to The Dandelion Dynasty. I read The Grace of Kings in January and absolutely loved it, but with how dense the series is, i haven't been able to spare the brain power for it the past few months. I hope that i feel good enough to pick up the second book somewhere during the summer.

I really enjoyed this one! The first 100 pages or so took me a month to read, but then i finished the book in a week. I'm really hooked and excited for the rest of the series. I didn't guess a lot of the twists, but maybe i'm just dumb 😅. I'm never shocked by them. I'm always like 'oh, yeah that makes total sense. I could have guessed that. It was kinda obvious', but before they are revealed, i don't really guess them (i hope i'm making sense). I agree on the prose being better. I just didn't notice the prose at all in this one vs. in the first book i did notice it being a little clunky sometimes. As for team Dorian or team Chaol, i'm on team neither. I actually wanted her to end up with Archer. I was a little devestated when he turned out to be a bad guy. It was obvious form the start that he was part of the rebellion, but i thought that Celaena would join the rebellion and then work with Archer and romance would bloom, but i guess not.

Ecstatic to see you back on WoT so quickly! A Crown of Swords was definitely the book that really changed everything for those who were reading the Series as it was being written. Multiple delays. This being after it received an unprecedented promotional push… and that magnified fans’ frustration. Speaking more specifically, for me it was also the worst time to get really emotionally involved in rooting for a Wheel of Time Endgame to become apparent. A big part of that was the atypically robust blurb that accompanied this particular book. And after the publishing delays started, I resorted to investing too much hope and expectations for what the rousing blurb conclusion ‘promised’… … both because of how juicy those last lines were AND due to what a brilliant finish Lord of Chaos climaxed with. I really though ‘Rand facing the Dread Forsaken Sammael, in Shadar Logoth, where the blood hungry mist Mashadar waits for prey’ would be an Ending at least on par with Dumai’s Wells. And not least because to me, it also confirmed that Rand’s Grand Plan for Illian hatched with Mat and Bashere would also unfold majestically. Wrong. And wrong again. And what made it worse, was how mean spirited and deliberately obtuse the conclusion with Sammael was. I don’t have enough insults and epithets in my vocabulary to express just how much I loath the conclusion to this book. Another thing that has frustrated me as a fan and I suppose as my own kind of critic ( I don’t work as a book reviewer, but in situations like these I relish getting to exercise those critical muscles 😝) over the years, has been the heedless blinkered sanctimony with which many sites that have had a Wheel of Time presence, a predominance even, have chosen to establish their progressive bona fides by yelling Rape loudly and often, with respect to Mat’s relationship with Tylin. Such a lack of imaginative empathy reminds me more of book burning, jackboot wearing, goose stepping ideological thuggery, than the progressive ideals that were being tootled with vigour, when the subject of Mat and Tylin was raised and analysed. And while I don’t agree with your conclusions about small changes being needed for Jordan to hit the Comedic targets he was aiming at… I was nevertheless relieved and ecstatic again, to see you acknowledge it through the Prism in which it was clearly written, instead of flying off the didactic handle. For me, Mat and Tylin… Mat’s entire emotional progression (which true to form he was resolutely oblivious to) contained some of the best writing in the Series from Jordan. It still makes me laugh today how someone as sharp as Mat, can be so oblivious to how Olver for example, is basically aping his every mannerism and behaviour, yet become so affronted that Tylin steamrolls over his own discomfort and discombobulation at being the Prey instead of the Hunter, when it comes to initiating Relations. And the more emotionally frustrated Mat gets, the more sanguine everyone else around him is about it, when they understand the truth of what’s going on. I mean, that scene with Elayne was basically Jordan with a narrative hammer spelling it out to any but the most heedless, self involved and ideologically crippled readers - ‘How funny is it when the tables are turned?’ For me? Hilarious! Anyway, I apologise for such an exasperated stream of critical steam, but let me thank you again for reminding me that there are indeed some people here with their imaginative empathy still intact. Bear with me just a little more as I finish with one of my favourite things to ruminate on, with respect to this book, that despite all its flaws and associated reading inconveniences, still reminds me what a Capital W Writer Jordan could be at his best. The partial redemption of the Shaido through the eyes of the Moshaine Sept Chief, Maeric was barely 3/4 pages, but that last line from him ‘Moshaine! We Dance!’ STILL GIVES ME CHILLS! Thanks Again for your Work. I hope your Wheel of Time Journey continues to inspire you to stay the course, without falling on the many narrative crossroads that lie in wait ahead. If nothing else, Knife of Dreams awaits to remind you why you started, if by then you have become jaded at all. Keep tossing those Dice!

What they cant live with is the fact that they are all oathbreakers. They see their entire way of life as a lie. I understand it's hard to go from high fantasy and that quality/level of writing, to SJM who is a fantastic writer, but more so in the realm of romance. Kind of like going from watching HBO shows to watching shows on the CW. The plot holes and writing issues my brother pointed out are so similar. lol He enjoyed the books like your husband, but had his gripes. We allow the romance/relationships to overshadow loose plot lines or under developed story lines...but they don't and hyper focus on it. Totally understandable, but interesting to witness.
