Many of the better positioned among the working class who lost their jobs in Cleveland industry moved away. Others moved to the suburbs many of which are relitavely affordable. But Cleveland has some historic, pre World War 2 partly blue-collar suburbs which are still prosperous just outside the city.

I recently moved to Cleveland from California. Came to visit for a week and fell in love with it, a week after coming back home, I got in touch with realtors to start looking at houses. I ended up in a really sleepy and mellow suburb, where I have great neighbors and very close community. I think I'll be here for a while!

Clevelander here. You got much of it right. A couple things I wanted to add. As some areas gentrified, shiny new construction replaced old buildings used by the previous residents - not just filling in old vacant lots or rundown buildings. Specifically, the shiny building across from the Westside market was not an empty lot. It was a rundown old shopping center until a developer bought it. I remember it had a pizza shop and a spectrum store as of about 5 years ago. I had to go there and return a modem one time before I went shopping at the market. You can probably see it on Google Earth. So some of the development is replacing desolation with prosperity, some of it is just getting the city caught up with the times. Steelyard is a bit trashy, lots of shoplifting and people begging you for money in the parking lot. It’s close to some sketchy neighborhoods like Clark Fulton and the Stockyards, so it attracts some of the economically struggling people from those neighborhoods and there is some notable crime. That’s why people in Downtown, Ohio City, and Tremont may avoid it. I never had an issue with it but I grew up in a place not that different from there. Some of the suburbanites who moved in are not going to be okay with that type of environment. Anywho, just wanted to throw that out there. Thanks for visiting my beautiful city. I think you did us justice here.

Wow.. I have strong history in Tremont and Ohio City.. Had you seen them 30 years ago you'd see the unbelievable progress. It's in part because of young professionals and The Cleveland Metroparks did just what I hoped they would.. They bought a huge amount of land and are returning it to nature, and adding miles and miles to the paved paths. Of course there is still old buildings that in time will be saved or not, and public housing isn't going anywhere and that's ok. When you live and work in those neighborhoods you get to know everyone regardless. The down side is that what was once an affordable place to rent and work downtown is not so affordable to the same type of workers today.

"Will it come back to the majority of the City?" Yes, every few years a new area of the city becomes the new It place to develop because properties are very cheap. It'll take some time, but I really do think eventually the city will be redone.

East Cle is terrible, but the city itself, the Flats, Ohio City, and the suburbs on the west side are all fantastic. Moved here from Pitt 7 years ago, and have no desire to leave.

Good stuff. Wish you would have shown Cleveland's Asian area which is roughly between E 30th and E 40th, Payne Ave and Superior. Its certainly not the size of a China town like Toronto or San Francisco but it's grown within the last 20-30 years. I don't call it Cleveland's "China Town" because we have a mix of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese grocery stores and restaurants in this area.

My friend got pulled over in EC for improper lane change, but unfortunately used that stop as a way to harass us because we were white. 2 of our black girl friends were in the backseat and we had just dropped off our friend to his house around 124th and St Clair (a very bad area in East Cleveland). I was in the backseat with the 2 girls until we dropped off our friend, where I hopped in the front seat. The cop asked us what “2 whiteboys” were doing there, and we told the cop we had just dropped a friend off and he asked where I was sitting, to which my friend replied “in the back seat” and stg the cop says “this behemoth of a human was sitting back there with those 2 women?” and we said “yeah” long story short he didn’t believe us and told us he thought we had drugs (the age old “do you guys have anything I should be worried about?” “Ok so if I search you I won’t find anything?”) dude called another cop to come down there, and even threatened to get a female officer to search the girls (but never even ended up searching us) and after a little bit of harassment and conversation with both cops (the second cop that pulled up was pretty cool and told us there had just been a shooting a few days ago) finally just gave my friend the improper lane change ticket and went on his way. Dude just wanted to scare us because we were white and in East Cleveland. Crazy city fr
