Homelessness was not as big of a problem until Gainey took over as mayor and the police force shrunk and were then told to stand down on crime (allegedly..). There were some homeless issues in ‘08 which seemed to get resolved by ‘10/‘11. Even bike-lane Bill was better. I wonder how many miss Ravenstahl? The mayors voted in have gotten progressively worse and worse…. The city trash/litter problem has increased, roads and bridges are still in disrepair. The public school system is terrible so wealthy liberals won’t let their kids go or they try to buy a house that feeds them into the one decent high school, Allderdice. The downtown is losing tenants and one of the largest buildings is suspected to be vacant soon… Luckily, Pittsburgh as a sancturay city has not gotten busload upon busloads of immirgrants which would strain the system. Not sure why? Maybe Texas doesn’t know about Pittsburgh being a sanctuary city? I always say, if Pittsburghers loved their city as much as they do the Penguins and Steelers (who have very nice stadiums), there wouldn’t be an issue like this…Pittsburgh would be the best city in the world.

I’ve been to Pittsburgh once before and agree with your last statement. It’s a real cool town imo and Roca’s outstanding work in western PA this summer is shedding a light on the area that a lot of us truly didn’t understand. It’s funny, despite all the work we put in over the 20th century, we’re right back to where we were 100+ years ago: a class divide like no other with no middle class to speak of, old money strangling politics, politicians being cool with being strangled as long as they can hang onto power, disease and public health crises rampant, and the world teetering on the brink of all-out global conflict. I just hope the right people can get the courage to lead us out of this hellhole.

My dads family are from North Braddock, I remember as a kid in the mid 60's visiting relatives, riding a bicycle on brick roads and the hills would beat ya up.. Great granny had a 3 story corner house. Memories.......

That's Allegheny County jail, right next to the homeless camps. That's crazy.

You know what’s really mind boggling about your video that I learned? You show us the absolute down and out poor people living in tents underneath a freeway and I can’t help but feel terrible for their ordeal. Then you show us an area with extreme wealth. One house is a mansion with 17 bathrooms. The guy is in prison for tax evasion. The mansion has all those empty rooms just sitting there day after day. I bet you that mansion could house all those people living under the bridge. They would have a residence and it would be easier for them to apply for a job. It seems so ridiculous for an empty mansion to just sit there when it could be housing those people and keeping them warm in the winter time. There are people that need money and we have other people that have more money than they need. It just seems so unbalanced.
