I'm amazed that reproducer sounds as well as it does. The gaskets look hardened and cracked. The center of the mica is damaged. Wow.

hi i have to say even though the original sounds better even the fake sound fairly good might just need a original stylist . as far as the motors both look very sturdy in fact i was impressed with what looked like a quality fake motor.
@mrrgstuff19 сағат бұрын
On its own, yes, the fake doesn't sound too bad. These machines usually need a bit of adjustment to get playing. One of the main issues is that the motors generally run too fast. I had to slow down the video of the fake playing to match the speed of the real one. The motors are unfortunately fairly poor quality copies, like seen in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6CZh6uroZ1gn9k The other major problem is the soundbox. I did service the one on this fake: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKqVgoGFrt2apbssi=8iqfXgyqeu68kSri Though it is also possible to fit a genuine one, which sounds better: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6HahGejf5uKe7Msi=UnjAWphdcc7vjxqI Thanks 😀 👍

I have a broken spring (i think thats the name). Its the one holding one of the 3 weights that spins. Where may i find this part? It definitely has something to do with the speed
@mrrgstuff20 сағат бұрын
That will be a governor spring. These do vary from motor to motor. Sometimes they can be bought ready made, and I heard people have made them. I have never had to replace one so unfortunately can't really offer ant suggestions, other than suggesting you ask on "The Talking Machine Forum".

Have a distant memory of seeing a gold needle. It had a short & very fine hardened steel wire protruding. Guess when it was worn down the brass would touch the tops of the groove. The bamboo ones require a cutter but would think that carefully shaving with a scalpel or small sharp chisel would sharpen it. Reddish brown needles were made of some kind of fibre. The sharpener had a small chuck in which to place the needle, which was twizzled by hand as the needle was sharpened against a rotating emery wheel. I have a few such needles & a sharpener, but find the needles usually wear before the record is finished. What history lies within a used needle tin. If only our talking machines could talk!

@mrrgstuff mine also came with my HMV W102C. In fact, one was in it, and it sounded terrible. That didn't actually matter as the machine cost me £40, so even if that wasn't the issue, I was still buying it at that price. 😁

The gold one is a Victor Tungs-Tone needle. You can insert into soundbox and play it inside the end groove to shape it. Then, do not remove from soundbox and play until the tungsten is worn down. You can get many plays out of it. This is also a loud tone needle being it is gold. Yours does look a bit worn down. Examine the tip closely.

When exactly would the fakes have been made? All the mechanical bits seemed to be from the 20s/30s, is it from then or is it much newer
@mrrgstuff6 күн бұрын
These particular fakes have been made certainly for a few decades but also still being made now. Here is a relatively recent video showing new machines being packed for shipping: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jojal5xngpyIpMksi=IDAn_QP7EOztnVob The technology is certainly early 20th century, but the manufacture is not. Brand new gramophone motors can be bought on ebay, along with horns and soundboxes etc. It's cheaper to buy a complete fake machine than build it up from new parts. You might often hear that these fake machines are made from old portable gramophone parts. Certainly, in the past, this has sometimes been the case, but these machines are 100% new made, and I cover that in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmSpgmR8ZZiEi6ssi=XPwOOllClE2fLQ78 In fact, new fake portable machines are now being made, and these can be found on eBay, too. Hope that helps. Thanks 😀 👍

To me it sounded better than the steel needle, until about half way through. The steel needle sounded better from that point on, I guess it had degraded too much so the sound was too distorted. That's what I felt, although it's important to note the Broadcast ones do have a longer playing time and tighter grooves on some/most; as do the Eclipse ones. Maybe there's a sweet spot, where the toothpick would be best for a whole record; with some trial and error it might be possible to find out the best length and type, maybe?
@mrrgstuff7 күн бұрын
Yes, it starred off well, but it didn't last. I have been experimenting, and certainly, on some records, they do seem to work very well. Thanks 😀 👍

I rarely have copyright issues, even with later records. YT refused to publish one & others have been 'waved through' with the words: "You have permission of the owners" Your experience with toothpicks reflects mine with fibre needles. It would appear that worn records are abrasive & wear the point. Try with a relatively unworn disc & preferably a full size one. Sound wave compression on these smaller discs compromises the quality. I wonder if a silicone lubricant would help the bamboo point last to the end?
@mrrgstuff8 күн бұрын
I've never had a copyright strike, but if it flags up as a claim, I usually have to share the revenue or lose it altogether. In this case, the record was fine, though. Thanks 😀 👍

Obviously the steel needle is louder. I did an experiment once with a wooden toothpick. People have also used cactus thorns.the fiber needles were indeed bamboo but were cut in a certain way with a triangle point. The could also be re-sharpened.

FYI, any audio recordings that are at least 100 years old are in the public domain. So you can play any music from 1925 or older and should not get a copyright claim, and if you do, you can dispute it. (For example, RCA is still trying to claim copyright on Caruso, even though all of his recordings are now in the public domain.)

Interesting video. The reaults weren't great, but I guess if there is a way of improving it using other methods described on here by others, maybe. Depends on how easy it is to do and whether the results are as good. I refill ink cartridges using bottles to save on costs, and that works for my needs. It is fiddly bur one you get the hang of it not too bad. Maybe the same would be true here. The results have to be good enough, though.
@mrrgstuff8 күн бұрын
Yes, the results were pretty poor in this video, but the bamboo needle started off well. I have had more luck on other records with good sound all the way through. Certainly worth a little more investigation, I think, though I expect I will still use steel needles for convenience and also when I am comparing equipment and need conditions to be as similar as possible. Fibre needles seem a bit more variable than steel ones, especially my home made ones 😅. Thanks 😀 👍
