Those days are gone. I worked in Tashkent this past Winter, and a decent apartment, with proper heating, a comfortable bed, modern kitchen etc costs the same as in Beijing or Istanbul, for example. Food is extremely limited and depressing, and if you want anything non Uzbek, like sushi, places are Mafia run and prices are on par with London! Stay away.

Ireland does have Uber and generally very good broadband and phone coverage. Yes, GDP does not represent Irish wealth. Ireland is s bit of a tax haven, less so now, but a lot of multinationals here so money flows through Ireland , doesn’t stay here. USA had quite low petrol prices I gather, cheaper than most EU countries and UK. Housing is a disaster price wise, €1,800 per month for a one bed apartment. Dublin is a beautiful city, lots of galleries , museums, restaurants, shops , green areas and no high rise which gives an open feel to the city. Marriage here is the same as elsewhere, it’s not set for a negotiated period. Smoking ban is good by most peoples views. You can smoke in a park. San Francisco had smoking indoors ban before Ireland .. at latest 1998. Never seen the straw thing here, totally new to me after 48 years living in Ireland. Seems some errors in this , plus a bit of padding. Interesting though.

Not that cheap for food. In Montengro we eat in a restaurant in the capital for 4 euros each and it wasn't a small meal.
