In later books once he realized that when talking to people who weren't elite runners that 100 miles/week was too much. (This after a woman complained that it took her nearly 20 hours/week), so he later modified it to 10 hours/week. When trying to build for it, I still think mainly in miles, but I use that updated rule to figure out how many miles to run.

Hi John, you say Arthur trained people from the mile up. Don't forget he trained Peter Snell who won the Olympic 800m twice and 1500m once (1960/1964). So, as much as I enjoyed your delivery style unfortunately, you lost me at 37 seconds.

I totally agree with the 80/20 approach and I'm not surprised that you got faster with this method. However, I have to believe that you would be even faster with some VO2 max intervals once a week in the 6 weeks or so leading up to a race. Just wondered what your thoughts were on that.

Thanks man. I honestly don’t. I wear socks with my running shoes, so I haven’t felt the need to do so. If they were really dirty, I’d soak them overnight in powdered tide and warm water and hang them to dry. That’s what I do with my shoes when they start to smell bad. I’m typically able to get a pair of shoes that’s in like new condition, that’s the best part.

I’ve been running in pre-owned shoes for years, including some of the top racing shoes out there (Alphafly, Takumi Sen). I never spend more than £50/$60, and in fact most of them considerably less than that. Prevents them going to landfill so soon, which is my main motivation, and I’m not contributing as heavily to the overconsumption in the running shoe space. Great vid!

I was vegan for about a year and I think I went right into a Keto based diet for about 6 months after that. I know 🙄😂. I think that time period was the healthiest of my entire life as well!! 30🍌John🤙 Why do you think one strays away from things like that when we acknowledge their benefits?
@johnsmithoninsta
@johnsmithoninsta Жыл бұрын
🤔 All I can think is that you probably thought the keto diet had something to offer you that might’ve been better than what you had experienced so far in your journey. I know I did high fat because I came across Peter Attia and his work and believed that being fat adapted was going to help my endurance. The only change I noticed is I could go longer without getting hungry. Life is just one giant experiment for us and our curiosity is going to lead us to experiment. The more in tune we can be with how these things make us feel, the better we can gauge what is best for us 🙂 That’s where I’ve landed so far. Always open to being wrong and learning along the way. The only one that is a hard no for me now is that no being needs to die for me to take care of my body. That was fun, thanks for the question! 😁 Cheers!

Glad going Vegan works for you. I'd be sure to get blood work done, as most vegans struggle with having proper nutrition (See "Debunking Vegan Myths" by Dr. James H. O'keefe) and supplements aren't all they have cracked up to be. The reduction in inflammation almost always occurs when people get off the Standard American diet, turns out simple carbs and a bunch of sugar probably aren't the best for you.
@johnsmithoninsta
@johnsmithoninsta Жыл бұрын
I believe it can work for everybody. There are so many options out there now! I’m not worried about my nutrition currently, but I do plan on getting blood work done. I will probably post it on another video 🙂 I actually switched from a very conscious diet that included a lot of fats and proteins. Some animal products and some plants. The biggest dietary change for me was reducing my dairy intake. I believe that is where the reduced inflammation came from. My diet contains more sugar than it ever has before and I feel great. I am happy to admit that I was wrong about high fat low carb being an ideal diet and I’m happy that no animals have to be harmed for me to be fed. 🙂
@Spock_Rogers

The evidence shows that vegans are able to maintain a healthy weight more than other diets. Dr. O'Keefe makes his money from medications and procedures. There is no need for animal products in a healthy diet.

Which training zone do you utilize when running for a record? Is it safe to use zone 4 continuously?
@johnsmithoninsta
@johnsmithoninsta Жыл бұрын
Any training you do in Zone 4 is going to take you roughly 48 hours to recover from. No matter what you are training for, the majority of your training should be done in zone 2. Most athletes use the 80/20 rule where 80% of your training is easy (zone 2) and 20% is hard (zones 3, 4, or 5). I hope that helps!

“Such factors as stress, caffeine, and excitement may temporarily accelerate your heart rate, while meditating or taking slow, deep breaths may help to slow your heart rate. Exercising for any duration will increase your heart rate and will remain elevated for as long as the exercise is continued.” Hope that helps!

Haven't hit 100 yet but I've cycled up to 80mpw a few times this year, holding it for three weeks before backing off. Has worked for me pretty well in terms of pushing it to my limit without going past it. Now I'm trying to hold 80 for longer since my body is used it it. Btw, what Lydiard books do you recommend? I've read some of Hanson and Jack Daniels this year - gotta go to the OG though!
@johnsmithoninsta

@supwell , thanks for the comment! I also have not hit 100 yet, but I am hoping to hit it next summer, we will see. The only book on lydiards training that I have read is “healthy intelligent training”. Other than that , I’ve just read a bunch of articles and write ups online. I’d love to get my hands on “Peter Snell and the Kiwis who flew”, but it’s $$$. I’ve recently been digging into some other high mileage material online. If your interested, I’ll pull it up and paste it in here for ya.
