Hi, my daughter and i want to replicate this for a school science experiment. We're absolute beginners so should we test the water daily once we've assembled it to check the levels are ok for the snails and plants? Will this set up work without the ostracods?
@glassyGREEN_4 күн бұрын
Hey, that sounds great. It will definitely work without the ostracods. If you want to add the dirt layer I recommend you to check out the walstad method to get more information about that. Otherwise you could also only use gravel without the dirt layer. You can test the water regularly if you want to. But in my experience it is not necessary if you do regular water changes and don’t have a big bioload from animals. But maybe as a beginner a test from time to time will help :) You should also give the setup some time after adding the water, so beneficial bacteria can grow. Good luck and just start experimenting (maybe with a planted setup first) :)

@@glassyGREEN_ thanks for your reply 😁. Do you mean give the set up some time before adding the snails or the plants?
@Obienne19 сағат бұрын
@@glassyGREEN_ Also the discord link is no longer active...
@glassyGREEN_12 сағат бұрын
@Obienne you can add the plants immediately. But you should wait a bit before adding the snails as there are not enough bacteria in the substrate to turn their poop that could potentially contaminate the water into harmless substances. Especially if you feed your snails. You can search for „aquarium cycling“ if you want to learn more about this :)

very nice to see someone (or i guess hear someone) who isnt from the us or a spanish speaking country pronounce "cholla" wood correctly. now that its been a few weeks, have you had any issues keeping desert plants in a sealed tank? id anticipate that even with minimal water being added initially they'd be susceptible to root rot

It actually took me a few times to pronounce it correctly :D So far, everything works perfectly. I haven’t watered them at all since I built it and will only do that if I see signs of drought on the plants.

@glassyGREEN_2 ай бұрын
Nearly nothing. The only thing that costs something is power for the light. I do little water changes maybe every 2 months which is possible due to my low feeding and overplanting. Due to my spare feeding the box of shrimp pellets I bought will probably last forever. Leaf litter is also quite cheap if you buy it and the cucumber or spinach leaves I give them from time to time are just kitchen scraps.

@glassyGREEN_3 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you so much :) Yes, you can use them in terrariums as the clean up crew as long as it has high humidity. In my experience they are quite hardy but not as much as the regular tropical white springtails. They reproduce much slower and probably need higher temperatures. They will also get eaten much easier by larger animals because they are not able to jump.
