Yes, you should play saxophone. Learning "Music Theory" causes mental illness, but if you play saxophone no one can tell.

Most of these seem like tips for people switching from alto/tenor to soprano. I play French Horn and soprano sax is my 2nd favorite instrument and I would like to learn it. Do you have any tips for people who have never played any kind of sax who would like to start on soprano?

I didn’t start on soprano, so I will have to imagine what that would be like. You may have to spend a lot of time practicing your tone to make a decent sound and learn how to stay in tune. I might be able to explain what I would do in a video.

I try it yesterday YS 475II, ATER YAS 23 9 YEARS AND YTS 62 6YEARS, about one hour a week, it is easy to play by ear es other saxaphons and it is emazing experience of tone qualiety. I am psychiatrist in Šibenik, Croatia and play saxophones from my 54.y to 63y , and soprano is something wich you realy need to try....playing by ear is the easy way to learn to play, avoid sheet for music if you love thevstructure of you brain!

Long ago I played tenor, alto, & soprano professionally in r & b, rock, and jazz groups. I didn't have the discipline to develop my proficiency or sound. Today, many years later, I wanted to try my hand again at the soprano and your video was very helpful and inspiring. I subscribed and will be checking out everything you have to offer, including your music. Thank you for sharing your experience and tips, Nathan. BTW, back in the day - 1970s, I used to jam out constantly to Grover, among others - Mr. Magic was a constant companion. 😊

Have you tried the new Dukoffs d8 for soprano? They are just awesome. I tried 2 old dukoffs and found the new ones to be much more in tune than the old ones. Even my teacher liked the new ones better. Give it a shot, you might like it.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist I'm thinking about adding saxophone to the list of instruments I play. My only issue is the fact that the instrument is pretty loud. So when I practice I know the neighbors may be bothered by it. Any suggestions?

Whether Julius Malema is a Pan Africanist or shall be seen as time goes by. In politics all compromised politicians are self exposed as to their change of direction . Whether he is or not and all that l can say he is not like Ebrahim Traore for now. He is rich and getting richer whilst claiming to speak for the poor who getting poorer as he speaks. Traore is fighting and changing lives of the poor whilst his salary is stable and his condition financially is the same. Maybe there are degrees in Pan Africanism. But Malema has played his role to invigorate Pan Africanism in the African youth. .

Totally agree with you on your favorite soprano saxophone players. Another one that has a great tone to immulate is Walter Beasley. It took me a long time to stumble on to him and he sings great too.

Saxophone is not that easy to play. I don't know why everyone thinks it is. It takes a lot of time getting use to dealing with just the reed. Finger control and the list goes on and on. Not to say It's impossible but get ready to put a lot of time into the instrument and by all means, take professional lessons.

@@AllenMusicTalk Thanks for this video. I'm a fan of the Rigotti Gold too but recently I have tried out the Boston Sax Black and Silver boxes. I love the 2.5 in the Silver for tenor and 2 in the Silver for alto. After trying tons of different reeds, I think I have found "the one." The Silver is a bit brighter than the Black box. For tenor, I play on a Jody Jazz Custom Dark 8 mouthpiece and I really like both the darkness and brightness that the Silver gives me. BTW: Love your backing tracks. Did you make them yourself or buy them from somewhere?

I’m a saxophone noob about 7 months in at the tender age of 59 playing tenor. When friends and acquaintances found out that I was pursuing sax, a plethora of their kids altos came out of the closets to offer me a new path.😅 So, by month 3, I added alto to my journey and I enjoy playing both. I am attracted to playing 80s/70s pop and it’s coming along well. I can memorize songs in 3-7 days so I spend most of my time working on rhythm and technique. Although my original idea was to add a bari in a year or two, I have swerved into wanting a soprano…It arrives tomorrow. 😂 I will be following you for more information to help me along my journey. Thank you for providing great and diverse information Allen!

@Allen, I agree that it’s a fine video; at about 2:15, when talking about posture with a straight neck, you say that your head will have to come forward, but you’re head is pointing down. I’ve heard Joe G at Soprano Planet say that’s where he aims his airstream, but to my eye, you state the opposite of what you’re actually doing. Thanks!
@Trizno
@Trizno Ай бұрын
Pointing the head down only restricts the airflow. Thinking of it as moving the head forward does not.

Thanks so much for your video, priceless advises! I have a straight one, find it very smooth compared to my oboe but feels soooo heavy 😝. What is your opinion pls: in the film “Jean Michel Basquiat - Downtown 81” he is waving something like a VERY THIN soprano. Is it a soprano or something called differently? If you Google the name,e of the film you’ll see the instrument on the poster right away. Cheers!
