As a quick summary and update on the pole break, the original issue was the metal ferrule/insert coming unglued. That was with a pole set that I did mention ahead of time was a pre-production poleset and not built with the normal construction methods. Easton did use to have issues with this, so they have improved their gluing process and added a test during actual production where they do a test on every ferrule, so I expect they'll have these solid glued in place well on the production tents. These poles have been used for almost 20 years by a wide range of different brands, so it is possible to glue them well. Also carbon is regularly glued to aluminum (e.g. most carbon trekking poles have aluminum flick locks glued on). When the ferrule did come unglued and a repair was attempted with an oversized sleeve, that was a honest attempt to fix the tent but also was problematic and caused the other breaks. A stiff and oversized sleeve is not a good way to repair any tent because it creates leverage and focuses stress on a small area at the ends (as mentioned). A sleeve that is properly fitted works better whereas an oversized sleeve focuses a lot of force on the edge while also creating leverage, so it can fairly easily break many poles. I don't think these breaks are representative of the strength of the tent, but rather show high leverage and stress focus that could have broken perhaps any lightweight tent. I note that all the breaks occurred exactly at the sleeve and nowhere else. So I am confident this was a pre-production gluing issue and a domino effect from there relative to the oversized sleeve. The actual poles are the same poles used by quite a few other brands (e.g. Samaya, Tarptent, Big Agnes, Kuiu, MSR). We are using dual archs of the smaller size (on the ends) or a single arch of the large size (on top) so it is quite a bit stronger than many other CF tents that use a single arch of the smaller size. With the oversized sleeve, this poleset is stronger than the aluminum polesets in comparable tents, and I expect it to do very well in windy conditions - especially when pitched for the conditions (e.g. guylines when appropriate, optional trekking pole supports if really windy). This incident does raise an interesting question about the repairability of CF. For the weight CF is stronger than aluminum in most ways, but can do less well under compression, so it may crack easier than aluminum if there is a focused stress point like this. A better fitting sleeve like the one at the end would be much better, and also having a little flex in the sleeve would distributing stresses much better (e.g. a composite/plastic sleeve that is pretty stiff but with a bit of give to it would distribute stress more). Ideal fix though would be a replacement section. We will certainly have those available. Cheers, Dan

I ordered this tent cuz Durston has earned my (and many other people’s) trust by now. Though I’m curious to see how this tent stacks up to the X Mid tents in storm. The thing with the x mid is that it has fewer breakable parts and could be adjusted and repaired more easily when needed. The caveat is that you need to pitch it properly for it to reach full potential. With this tent though, I feel like it would probably last longer before it collapses in the wind. It’s also a lot easier to pitch for it to achieve max sturdiness and is definitely easier to move around. But at the same time, once the pole breaks, it looses its functionality as a shelter against wind completely and will require some spare parts to repair. I think the cost to replace the carbon fiber poles would also be higher than the cost to replace a set of trekking poles(especially if they are not made out of carbon fiber). But at the end of day, not super concerned as long as the factory doesn’t f this up.

Fixing the metal grommet coming loose is something that happens all the time on basically every pole set I've owned (carbon, aluminum, etc.) from every company (marmot, north face, MSR, etc.). It takes 5 seconds to fix with by pushing the grommet back out with something skinny (coat hanger) and then putting a dab of glue. The "repair" in the video is egregiously bad and doomed the poles to fail.
@smellybearc74112 ай бұрын
With the cf poles themselves, I highly doubt the production version of tent would be as storm worthy as the x mid. But when the trekking poles are added, I can kinda see how it might become more sturdy than the x mid. But again, I just don’t think Dan would launch a product that hasn’t been tested.

Even without seeing this video I've always avoided carbon fiber in the backcountry. Aluminum is heavier, but will bend before it breaks and tends not to fail as catastrophically. I'm sure we've all seen bent tent or trekking poles that still did the trick; the carbon equivalent would've broken.
@durstongear2 ай бұрын
Aluminum would also break in this type of stress. It can bend under some circumstances, but with an oversized sleeve like this it puts the stress on a sharp line across the pole that would kink and break it.
@niceguy1912 ай бұрын
@@durstongear I'm mostly talking about what happens when the design stress is exceeded (the improper splint in this video caused that). I can still use a bent tent pole (or bend it back like my trekking poles). I have tents with permanently bent aluminum poles from strong winds/snow that would've collapsed if they were carbon fibre. @niceguy1912 ай бұрын
@@durstongear Completely agree that the failure here in the video was a point stress from too large of a "repair" splint and this tent would likely do great under normal proper use, but I'll have to give a bit of pushback on what aluminum versus carbon can handle. The same weight of carbon fibre doing as well as aluminum isn't relevant as that's not how these materials are used. Nobody uses the same weight of carbon fibre since the whole point is typically to be lighter for a similar strength. Manufacturers tend to "overbuild" the aluminum versions more too, I'm guessing due to costumer preference, so that contributes to it as well. I absolutely love how you're engaging directly with people in the comments and clearly you're passionate about this tent. I think it's one of the best designs I've ever seen (the rainfly without a footprint is especially cool) for a one-person tent in a good while.

In very cold weather, aluminum can actually get stronger while carbon fiber, rather the epoxy matrix holding same, can get weakened. That's really only the main advantage of aluminum over carbon fiber, otherwise quality carbon fiber has more advantages over Al.

@noroxh76622 ай бұрын
I think the tent looks really promising and I personally really like the thought that went into the design. However the major downside to this tent is that carbon fiber is prone to breakage - it’s simply a downside of the material. Carbon fiber reacts very sensitively to dull blows and, in my experience as an angler, often breaks at precisely these points years later. I get that it has many desirable qualities like being lightweight and flexible, however in my opinion the qualities are not worth the risks.

What a tremendous looking tent, everything I would want, like fly first/only pitch, if I didn't have the X-mid! Next time if I don't get put into extended care first. I'm sure the pole issue will get sorted but I think there is always a risk to flexible poles and perhaps especially carbon fibre. It's one of the things I love about the trekking pole X-mid, never have to worry about that issue even if I have to be more particular about pitching. Even if I forget my poles somewhere like I forget everything else in life I could always find a stick to fashion into a pole.

Looks like a great tent, but I am in the same camp, no pun intended, as many other folks here. Not being a true gram counter, I would not mind a few more ounces for stronger (i.e., aluminum) poles. I am a clumsy klutz, and if something can be broken I will knuckleheadedly find a way to accidentally break it. Those carbon fiber poles are a deal-breaker for me. I am going to hold out in the hopes that aluminum will eventually be available.
@rpenm2 ай бұрын
The splice is focusing stress at its ends because it flexes less than the pole. The old aluminum pole will probably flex better than the sleeve due to its lower diameter, but will likely still weaken the pole.

For reference, I own a DD Kakwa and previously owned XMids but moved them on. Not because of quality or design, simply personal preference. Durston products are impressive and, he is shining light in customer service and product development- which tent company 'owner' answers so many queries ans comments personally? Im not impressed with an unbalanced and sensationalist 'review'. Your method of pitching in reasonable wind was inexperienced, and would any tent at risk. You were also aware it was a prototype and found a fault with the glue- immediately the material choice became moot, and alloy poles would fail initially for the same reason. Instead of focussing of a review of design, build strength, usability and price point, you became fixated on the pole breakage. I suspect this was a deliberate move to generate clicks, and comments- a trap I just fell into! ;) To demonstrate my faith in DD, Ive just ordered the tent and will be using it in Tasmanian conditons- I dare you to come down here or New Zealand and test his tents in the wind against many others. Unsubscribed due to doing the wrong thing towards someone that does the right thing.

I had a pole snap on me once, on a Zephyros One, I then realised that aluminium poles can 'stick' to the damp interior of the nylon sleeve. If I had always made sure the the pole was properly positioned between the two grommet hole ends it would never have happened. I then lost confidence in such poles and bought myself a Lanshan One tent. Since then I've never had a problem.
@tvh3002 ай бұрын
On the plus side, the exposed poles makes a bush repair by lashing a stick to the pole much easier, and way less likely to damage the fabric.

Easily over a decade ago I paid someone to make carbon fiber poles for a Big Agnes Fly Creek 1. It was the beginning of my ultralite life. The third night I was setting up the tent and one pole snapped. I've been very afraid to try carbon tent poles since.
@Asdf-7892 ай бұрын
Just be warned - if this happens - The aluminium sleeve applied at the end of the video is better but will still only be a partial remedy - as it has a different flex profile and strength to the carbon tubes used for the poles, it will still create stress focal points at the ends of it again. Thin walled carbon tubes tend to fail at stress concentrator points. Actually so do aluminium (easton). The sleeve will probably work as a field expedient repair but you shouldn't rely on it in heavy wind gusts and I'd also suggest you'd best move your tent out of high wind areas in conjunction, until you can get back and replace the pole set.

@durstongear2 ай бұрын
We have tested the poles for a long time and they are quite good during normal use. The breaks here were a domino effect from that pre-production gluing issue (which we have quality checks for during actual production) and then stress points created by an oversized sleeve. With a production poleset the strength will be very good.

Main reason to bring a tent is bugs. That's what's so great about integrated bugnets of X-mid Pro's. Holding-out for: 1) DCF, 2) Integrated-bugnet, 3) Two-doors, 4) Shaving some ounces off this boat-anchor (just-kidding, it's a great sil-poly design.). Steven's a pretty tough grader. Once again, Mr Durston's design is 'Best-in-Class' on the first go. ...The reason for two-doors is cross-ventilation, not just access.

I think about carbon tent poles like carbon bikes. In an application where it is likely stuff gets knocked a bit, its not worth the weight saving. You can bend a metal pole back into shape and go back to sleep. A carbon pole failure and you're in trouble. They are (like the bikes) for proffesionals with niche applications.

I feel like this tent is a strategy to get people to use trekking pole tents. Good luck repairing one of these CF poles out in the field, when with a trekking pole tent it's just a straight stick you can either tape back together, or replace with a tree branch or something.
