My 123-year-old newly-conserved Singer sewing for the first time in who knows how long. You can see how the "double-bounce" at the bottom of the needle stroke produces a loop of blue thread that the shuttle point picks up on its way forward, interlocking it with the gold bobbin thread.
I have been fascinated with shuttle-based sewing machines for some time; this is one of the earliest mechanisms to form stitches, and is a perfect imitation of what a weaver does on a loom, just with a single warp thread. Can you imagine the engineering and genius that went into this design, which can form stitches incredibly rapidly?
