Interesting that you mentioned avoiding dry steering. I find that if you "unsteer" (i.e. get the steering approximately straight) as you approach your forward and then reverse stopping points it helps to set up the car for your next move without the need to dry steer. (Hard to explain - hope that makes sense.)

In terms of states in Australia, I believe Victoria is the only one but don't quote me on that. Hook turns do exist elsewhere around the world but I'm not sure where. Yes, this type of turn could be stressful for drivers coming from interstate - that's why I created this video, in the hope it can help people understand this type of turn. 🙏🏾

So it does have its benefits, But if there’s say 3 or more cars wanting to turn right 2 cars in the intersection, one in the lane at the lights, They will impede left turning traffic correct? In NSW they had done away with hook turns donkeys years ago, Typically for us, we’re not allowed to queue in intersections right turns obviously from right lane as ppl turning left generally don’t impede traffic as at the time they have right of way unless traffic is backlogged once person turning left has gone thru Ppl going straight go straight with no hindrance unless obviously traffic isn’t moving regardless
@CRUDEDriving
@CRUDEDriving 2 күн бұрын
Yes, they will impede left turning traffic. I guess for the CBD - trams require priority so some of the hook turns allow for that. However, they have introduced hook turns into the Carlton (inner-city) suburb where there are no trams! I'm not sure this was necessary. So far I haven't seen too many issues like left turning traffic being impeded. You mentioned "we're not allowed to queue in intersections", the same applies in Victoria. Thanks for your comment. :)

Better signage, or revamp the other side of the intersection so its 2 lanes in and 2 lanes out, seems the latter would be the go given the volume of people going straight.

Love when people go 40 in a 60, that's obviously the perfect speed, why else would almost 100% of 50+ people do it? Totally doesn't cause road rage (literally just go the speed limit innit).

this is the attitude that needs to change. 20 kays under is fine if the conditions call for it, which can be a number of things from weather to traffic and the drivers skill levels. Hell, their familiarity with the road plays a factor. Ive had people get mad at me for doing 20 under while i was driving a 3.5 tonne van (work related) through narrow streets lined both sides with cars that i have never been on. Youre not the only road user and everyones skill, confidence and judgement is different. Keep that in mind the next time youre tailgating or road raging at someone for driving within these considerations.
@CRUDEDriving
@CRUDEDriving 2 күн бұрын
It's all about the conditions. If someone is blatantly going slower for no good reason then obviously that isn't right. I had to move house recently and had a van fully loaded. I had to slow down earlier and take corners much slower than in my performance car, yet everyone around me got annoyed. I think a little thought and empathy needs to be had before people make judgements. Regardless of all this, I have been behind people driving slower for no reason and should be driving faster because the conditions suit it. I think in regard to drivers skill levels - if they are a learner or probationary driver then there should be some sympathy for them but a full licenced driver should be able to handle themselves well - if not, maybe they need some lessons?

@@MntlMajorkozmo I drive to my dad's on a road where there are a million Sunday drivers, often old and inconsiderate. Multiple times (on one specific bend) people will drive 40 in a 60, slow to 10 MPH or sometimes a dead stop, then creep round a massive country road corner, then speed up to 40, and continue doing 40 in a 20 zone. Being a bend, I don't attempt an overtake, but that's the kind of behaviour I'm on about. 40 everywhere, regardless of road conditions.

Thank you. :) 100% on confidence and ability - this is why driving lessons and learning to drive with the right educator is imperative! Many novice drivers naturally when first learning to drive are not confident in how slow or fast they should be travelling according to the conditions. They tend to slow down too early or not enough, or drive at a speed which doesn't suit the road. Basically their ability to control the vehicle can be erratic... At some point throughout their training experience with me, they learn how to truly feel and drive the vehicle at the appropriate speed according to the conditions. 🙏🏾

People don't understand that you have to wait for the green light to appear on the street you are wanting to turn into before you proceed with your hook turn. Cars waiting behind you often beep as soon as your light turns red not knowing that the other light has to turn green first before you commence your turn. And the drivers in the street you want to turn into often commence entering the intersection before you even commence your turn also not understanding why you are waiting.
@CRUDEDriving

100%. I showcase this near the end of the video. I think people either don't know or just don't care. What we do, is when the traffic light directly in front of us turns amber, we start rolling ever so slowly to create the momentum to then go when the light turns green on the road we are turning into. Rather than being completely stopped to immediately moving. This can sometimes help with stopping people from behind beeping and is much better for flow. And of course, being highly aware of who is behind us before committing with a right mirror and head check. 🙏🏾

FYI: There was text on this video with an arrow symbol pointing to the left lane but it didn't come through in the final edit of this short, sorry! This is the intersection of Scotchmer St and St Georges Road in Fitzroy North, Victoria - heading towards the Carlton North area. There are two fairly cramped lanes. The left lane is marked with a left turn only marking and the right lane is marked with straight and right turn markings. Every single time we are at this intersection, everyone uses the left turn only lane to go straight through. This is because the right turn lane is blocked by road users wanting to turn right. What are your thoughts on this scenario? Should the marking be removed due to the high rate of road users ignoring the left turn only marking? So you take foot off accelerator and get prepared to break, but hold off in case it's not actually needed. If the car starts moving away you never need to break and can move back to accelerator. We were travelling on a 100 km/h multi-lane freeway (keeping left) and reduced our speed by a few KMs to ensure we were not next to the truck driver and remained behind, giving them space to move in-front of us. I mentioned "read the driver" and that the truck was clearly going to do what they did. This was because it's a legal requirement and the truck driver was behind multiple cars prior in the left lane, so they were overtaking and needed to move back to the left lane. The driver on the lesson does understand the dangers of driving around trucks to some degree but I could have discussed this a bit better with him. FYI, we were bang on 100 km/h according to our in car speedometer but as we know, not all speedometers are accurate and the car in the video is around 3 km/h slower. I do educate students on this but they usually keep to the exact speed on the dial - they need to do this as on the test otherwise they will fail if going over the speed according to the dial.

You must give way to cyclists in a bicycle lane, and only move into a bicycle lane when it is safe to do so.' Then pg. 113 says 'to make a left turn you *must* approach the intersection as close to the left side of the road as possible, but give way to bicycles when crossing into the bicycle lane.' Thanks for the comment and question! 🙏🏾 Where will you be staying? Not exact location, but suburb? Also, where are you coming from? General driving tips: ------------------------------- - Keep a safe following time behind other vehicles of 3 seconds in good conditions. Add a few more in wet. *Why? Because you need the time to react and distance to brake. >Video on distance and following time for more clarification: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIeQZ41mjdiLn8k - Keep left where appropriate and where legal and necessary, especially on high speed multi-lane roads. By keep left we mean stay out of the far right lane unless overtaking. You can keep in the far left lane if it's possible and you a travelling straight for a while. - Headlights on low beam will reduce your risk of being involved in a collision (up to you). - At roundabouts we give way to vehicles already in the roundabout, not to the outside right of the roundabout. But, take caution and don't enter if someone is racing towards the roundabout from the outside right as they will likely enter quickly and completely ignore the rule. - Give way means to slow down and, if necessary, stop to avoid a collision. - Read the road (markings, etc) and read the signs well ahead, speed limits change constantly! - Be prepared and get on to things early, forward plan. - Drive to the conditions. Melbourne Things: ------------------------------ - Be prepared for lots of traffic Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm. - Sundays are bliss, best day to be out on the roads, most road users are calm and nice. - Road safety cameras are everywhere, for speeding and now seat belts and phones. - Give way to trams before entering their lane if you have to drive down it. - Give way to trams before turning right at a solid green traffic light. - Hook turns are now inner city and CBD, hopefully my video helped if you watched it. - Road works are everywhere. - Left lanes on freeways can tend to turn into a exit to another freeway or main road. - Melbournians drive too close to each other, keep your distance, stay away from packs of close drivers. - We have some strange roads and markings at times that confuses people. - Some speed limits do not suit the road or the conditions and could be higher or lower. - Most people are not doing the speed limit. - Police are big on speeding, drugs and alcohol.
