Do you know who gives way in this situation? Context: Driver of black vehicle in-front is wanting to turn left. Cyclists are passing on the left. There is no bike lane in the intersection... *The rules are in relation to the Road Safety Road Rules 2017 in Victoria, Australia. The cyclists must give way in this situation because they are not allowed do ride past a vehicle that’s turning left with its left indicator on.

100%. Regardless, as we know cyclists are more vulnerable and I think the driver of the black vehicle handled this well with the first few cyclists. Cyclists will not always give way and we must make the fine judgement on whether we as drivers can actually turn in-front of a cyclist that isn't slowing down enough and adhering to the Road Safety Road Rules 2017 Rule 141(2) - The rider of a bicycle or an electric scooter must not ride past, or overtake, to the left of a vehicle that is turning left and is giving a left change of direction signal.

Not sure what the exact rule is in Australia however, in the UK, the vehicle turning must give way. Reason being, the car is intending to cross traffic on the main road and so should give priority to the traffic it intends to cross the path of including bicycles (and pedestrians on non-traffic light controlled junctions too) whether said traffic is on your side or the opposite side. The main rule about priority to remember is that it should be given to you, not taken in order for you to proceed. Again, what I’ve stated are UK Highway Code rules not Australian.

Thanks for sharing that. It's very interesting to compare rules. I'm slightly aware of some of the UK Highway Code, especially from watching Ashley Neal's videos. The rule in Victoria, Australia is Rule 141(2) - The rider of a bicycle or an electric scooter must not ride past, or overtake, to the left of a vehicle that is turning left and is giving a left change of direction signal. In this video, I'd say the last few cyclists were required to adhere to that rule. However, we need to be mindful of more vulnerable road users regardless of the rules. 🙏🏾

Yeah I feel like the bikes should be giving way. The car is already at the intersection ready to turn while the bikes are only just getting there. Its like lets say a motorbike is a few cars behind this black car, the rider pulls to the left to get ahead of these cars and suddenly jumps in front of the black car. It's dangerous, stupid, discourteous.

My rule book (2016) says when turning left you should move as far left as you can on the road, moving into the bicycle lane, giving way to any cyclists on it. Have the rules changed since then?

Where are you from and what rule book are you referring to? In this scenario, the bicycle lane ends and the black car drives past that lane and into the intersection/junction to turn left. The rule in Victoria, Australia (Road Safety Road Rules 2017) is Rule 141(2) - The rider of a bicycle or an electric scooter must not ride past, or overtake, to the left of a vehicle that is turning left and is giving a left change of direction signal. In this video, I'd say the last few cyclists were required to adhere to that rule. However, we need to be mindful of more vulnerable road users regardless of the rules. 🙏🏾

@CRUDEDriving I'm in Victoria and I'm referring the 2016 Road to Solo Driving book. I've checked again and think I just misunderstood.. On pg. 95 it says 'if you need to turn left from the road, you may drive along the bicycle lane for up to 50m only if it is necessary to do so. You should be courteous to cyclists. You must give way to cyclists in a bicycle lane, and only move into a bicycle lane when it is safe to do so.' Then pg. 113 says 'to make a left turn you *must* approach the intersection as close to the left side of the road as possible, but give way to bicycles when crossing into the bicycle lane.' To my knowledge the book never states who actually gives way when turning left. I think I might just stick to the actual legislation 😅 Thank you for addressing these things in your videos. It's clearly invaluable!

@@katyb2793 thank you! 🙏🏾 I want to help people understand everything to share the road appropriately. Regardless of rules, I think this video is a good example of sharing the space and looking out for one another. The road to solo book is innacurate. You can find the Victorian road law legislation here: www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/statutory-rules/road-safety-road-rules-2017/021 The legislation can change and the last update was 04/10/2024.

@CRUDEDriving thank you so much. Yes I agree, it's really helpful to actually see these situations, rather than just read about it. I'm so glad I've discovered the handbook might not be 100% accurate! Which is pretty shocking actually... Thanks for the link to the legislation. I'll be sticking to that from now on!

@@katyb2793 the handbook is still great but definitely don't trust everything in it. If you ever need anything at all in relation to driving, feel free to email me at crudedriving@gmail.com Thank you for your comments and viewership. :)
