Sadly, West Kirby Promenade has since been spoiled by the so-called 'Wave', a horrible flood barrier that inhibits viewing from parked cars and limits the remaining width of the sea-side pavement.
@paultsworld17 күн бұрын
That’s true. But before there were just a couple of covered seating areas, now this ‘wave’ has provided seating for anyone who wants to. I actually find it nicer to walk along the promenade without having a constant view of a long row of cars.

I have had a brugmansia for about 3 years now, it has at least 8 stems, full of leaves but I'm lucky if I get 1 flower all year, I water daily and feed weekly .would I be better off cutting the stems down to 1 or 2 so they get more energy ? Any advice would be appreciated
@paultsworldАй бұрын
Sorry to hear your plant is not producing flowers. I don’t think cutting stems down would help - in fact it might hinder as brugmansias only flower above a fork in the stem. I would say that in the Summer feed much more heavily, repot it in the Spring and fill the bottom half of the container with horse manure. How about buying a new cutting of a different variety next Spring and have the two. It could be that some varieties don’t flower as freely.
@lmurano4056Ай бұрын
can you cover them for the winter outside .. we get the minus 30
@paultsworldАй бұрын
Is that minus 30 centigrade or Fahrenheit? Either way a brugmansia won’t survive those temperatures without a great deal of help. You can dig them up, leaving a small ball of root and put them inside in a frost free place.

I have a 2 year old Brugmansia that grows very well but has not flowered at all. I am in US zone 8. This will be the 2nd winter & last year I brought it inside into a plant room. I didn't cut it back in any way and watered when needed. Do I need to let it go dormant in order for it to flower. One thing I realize I may not be doing is providing it enough food during the summer. But, I'm wondering if it requires dormancy?
@paultsworldАй бұрын
That’s a really good point. My view is that as these are tropical plants so they don’t need dormancy. I think you already know this but once a brugmansia is growing well in early Summer you literally cannot over feed it for the rest of the season. The professionals set up their plants with 50% horse manure. There are differences with the different varieties so maybe add a second plant so you can compare. Good luck and get it fed (and big-time watered) next Summer. 👍

Hi paul im trying to find out about overwintering small brugmanias...as i have one grow from seed its about 15 inches tall..shall i cut it or try grow it on indoors
@paultsworldАй бұрын
Hi! As it’s so small I would keep it indoors for its first Winter. Leave its leaves on and grow it on a little. Be very watchful for insects - perhaps spray it before bringing it in. If you are happy spraying then spray your big ones after you’ve taken all the leaves off to over-winter. It’s mealy bugs that can be a problem and spider mites with the one indoors.

hey Paul...tmorrow im going to take brumansia cuttings and i got some insulation for the cana pots....plus mulch....its getting colder lol next year going to leave dahlias in the ground..not dig them up
@paultsworldАй бұрын
Good idea to deal with the brugmansias now - I am going to wait a little longer as it’s still very mild here. As you know I always leave the dahlias out in the ground - however I do worry about them when it rains a lot. Dahlias like it dry in Winter so I sometimes put a tarpaulin over them when it rains to keep the worst of the rain off them.

Exactly how far can you cut a Brugmansia back? Under the fork if it has one?
@paultsworldАй бұрын
You can cut them back as far as you like, some people cut them back to the ground each year. I prefer to cut them back as little as possible and certainly above the forks, as I believe then they’ll flower sooner the following year. As I put them in the garage to over-winter, I simply cut them back just enough to get them in through the garage door.

I'm pleased you found my video helpful. I don't know how harsh your Winters are but with climbing roses which all flower on the present years growth you can cut back and prune as you like from early Spring and they will grow new shoots and flower that Summer. In the video I pruned mine in late Autumn which also is OK as we don't have harsh Winters near the coast in Britain. I'm not familiar with Cewability but from what you say it sounds really healthy. Give it a good feed in Spring as it starts to grow.

Interesting how it’s called mould. Leaf compost may be more accurate. Nature creates leaf mould every year - that how soil gets created - tree roots mine and extract mineral, combine with carbs from photosynthesis and drop onto the ground. Microbiology, insects, worms do the rest. Amazing. Worms are great accelerants to make even better more diverse biological soil.
@paultsworld2 ай бұрын
@taxusbaccata6332 That’s an interesting point - nature is truly marvellous at recycling itself in a never ending cycle of life and death. My take is that it is called leaf mould because it’s broken down by fungi - fungus creates mould whereas compost is created through decomposition caused by microbes.
