What a nice surprise to see a new video and a new look for you - quite handsome! Your garden is unbelievably beautiful, so much color. It’s breathtaking! At 1:26, a very colorful shrub comes into view, left of the rhodo; what is that? Pieris? I lost several azaleas from the Arctic Blast that hit the US around Christmas but thankfully my one deciduous azalea (my favorite one due to its amazing color and fragrance) did survive, providing me a glorious show this spring. This video has convinced me to add more deciduous azaleas to my garden. And the wedding cake tree is incredibly lovely; I think must have one of those as well. Bittercress and dandelions proliferate in my garden as well - such annoying plants but not as obnoxious as the Bermuda grass that has taken over parts of my yard and gardens! UGH! I have some clematis that I would love to propagate so I hope you will make a video when you take cuttings from yours. Thanks for another lovely tour of your garden.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Thank you JC - very kind of you. Yes, it’s a pieris - probably forest flame. I remember reading about that arctic blast you had late last year - makes our ‘harsh’ Winter sound a bit weedy. I wonder if the deciduous azaleas are hardier than the evergreen - your experience suggests so. Yes, let’s do these clematis cuttings together in a few weeks when everyone’s temperatures have warmed up.

Good Morning Paul, How beautiful, it must have been wonderful coming home to the garden looking so marvellous. Sailing the Mediterranean..ah sigh I wish I was there that week, we had one day of cold high winds and another of SNOW... in MAY at 800 meters ( you hear the indignation in my voice🤣) I love that clematis that you have on the wall. You make me want to try deciduous azaleas, but they don't do well here, but I want to try one more time after seeing yours.. but you ARE the Azalea king. Dandelions are the bane of my existence, the tap root goes to China and they hide next to other plants and the next thing you know, there is the seed head. It looks like you have had the perfect amount of Spring rain for all the plants to look so splendid and healthy. The path bed looking up to the Aubrietias looks amazing with every colour represented, just inspirational.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Hello Margaret - snow! Here we go again 😆. It is amazing how these dandelions hide in plain sight - I grab them just as the ‘clock’ blows in all directions. Temperatures have been below the seasonal average but rain levels have been good. Go on - one more try with a deciduous azalea… you can do it!
@margaretmichelsen766 Жыл бұрын
I'll do it! Any excuse to go to the nursery. Yes, we had below average temperatures last Spring. Made growing vege challenging. In fact, food production failed for us for the most part and now we are going into El Niino, so drought for us soon. 😳

Seem to have lost my original message! Your garden always looks fabulous Paul but I particularly love it at this time of the year when your Azaleas and Rhododendrons are in bloom. A lady on another channel was talking about Clematis Avalanche but hers wasn't flowering at the time and I thought I'd like one. Having seen yours I now know that I definitely want one! It's stunning. Glad that you enjoyed your holiday. We once went on a boat trip around Paxos and Antipaxos and I've never forgotten the colours of the water even though it was many years ago. We were away too last week staying at Ynys Castell on Anglesey and the property had stunning gardens and when the tide went out, we were able to walk along the causeway to Plas Cadnant hidden gardens. Like you, I've come home and been amazed at how much the garden has romped away. Look forward to seeing your next video and I hope the Robin makes another appearance. Thanks Paul.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
I agree Wendy, the azaleas and rhododendrons really ‘make’ the front garden during Spring - hopefully the hydrangeas will then take over. I also called in at Paxos & Antipaxos - I seem to always visit those islands whether I’m sailing in the Northern or Southern Ionian. Glad you enjoyed a stay on Anglesey - great place. I noticed some clematis ‘Avalanche’ at Goredale yesterday. I’ll ask Mr Robin if he intends going for a second brood - I’ve read they can have three.
@wendybartlett6717 Жыл бұрын
@@paultsworld Gordale here I come! Thanks for that Paul. Yes, it would be lovely if Mr.Robin could have another brood. I didn't know that he could potentially have three. I've been having problems with chlorosis on my rhododendrons too in the past few seasons. Someone told me to use a lot of peat moss, coco peat, pine bark and pine needles in the potting mix to make the soil more acidic. It worked out great. No chlorosis this year. Maybe you could dig up the soil around the trunk and ammend it with these materials. Hope it works. Thanks for the lovely video.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Sounds as though you’ve really sorted out your rhododendron - I need to do the same as it’s been like that for a few years. Thank you for the advice.

It's great to see you back, Paul. I definitely agree about having 30-40% evergreens in the garden to help get me passed the winter months and even so here in zone 6b where the options start to become less. I hope you enjoyed your vacation!

Paul oh no Daphne’s roots are very sensible to root disturbance and can’t be moved once planted. These plants are very difficult to grow and are woodland plants I have killed too many as I love them so much that’s why they expensive. Put them in complete shade and free draining eracasus soil is ideal. I hope your daphne be saved. Like have several and some are in sunny are but I keep them covered with a bed sheet. Don’t over water either make sure it’s free draining soil almost how you plant lavender but use eracisus soil. Good luck

Thank you for the extra information - never had a plant as difficult as this one. I’ll find a place for it based on your advice and see what happens. Nothing to lose really as it was really unhappy where it was.

Not even a nibble on your hostas!! 😯Do you do anything in particular to protect them, or are you just a lucky chap?? 🤗 Is it the bark chip that stops the slugs…?
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
That’s a good point about the bark chips. I think it may make a difference - not so much that the slugs can’t get over it but it is always so dry that they probably don’t like it. I have hostas under shrubs in the back garden that do get eaten - and already have large holes in them.

Hi Paul I would like to ask about Cornus kousa Tri-Splendour dogwood. Where didi you buy? I am looking for but I haven’t see on sale.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Hi Lenda, that’s a great choice - these cornus are spectacular. I bought mine at a garden centre in North Wales many years ago. I suppose you could try online and see if there are any specialist growers. Good luck!

Yeah it’s nice being in the garden, but there’s no place better then being on the water, lucky you. As always it’s looking just lovely. You’re Daphne may need a male or a female, I just learned about those a couple years ago and bought the male and female. Last year neither had a bloom and this year both of them bloomed.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
I agree - I just love it out on the waves - so calming. Now that is interesting - male and female daphne. I’d better look into this - thank you Wende for letting me know. 🌻

i have a rhodidendrum in the garden i want to lift and reposition it..when do u think the best time to do it
@paultsworld10 ай бұрын
The Spring is a good time to move most things. However the rhododendron flowers in the Spring so maybe enjoy the flowers then move as soon as it’s finished flowering. If you want to do it sooner then do it just after your last frosts.

@@ThePegasus101 very good. As it’s a woodland plant it will appreciate ericaceous soil and azalea food - plus plenty of water, especially while it’s increasing its roots.

Some people are just lucky (yachtsmen) while others have to work very hard preparing the students for the final exams :-) The garden looks stunning, perhaps you should go away more often ;-) What's happened to all the weeds?
