Hi Paul, how lovely to see another of your videos. I was struck by how absolutely beautiful the pond was. Mother Nature worked her magic with the frost. I remember when you started the shed bed. It has certainly come a long way 😁 I’ve tried to take cuttings from one of my clematis a couple of times with no luck. If you have any advice I would sure appreciate it. Regards to the little guy 😊❤️
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Hello Vicki, I agree, the pond looked great and the light just about managed to shine on part of it. Thank you, I am pleased with the shed bed - it’s evolving. I think the best time to take the clematis cuttings is after the flowers have finished and the new stems are growing strongly. These make good cuttings. Hopefully I’ll do a video in the Summer. I’ve found the montanas take well, I haven’t tried the large flower types as I’ve given up on them because of clematis wilt. The robin is doing well 👍

Now you have a White Garden Paul, so pretty too. It accentuates the great variety of plants you have now. We had so much rain that hydrangeas lost their Winter shapes; no dried flower arrangements this year. Bugs on house plants a bugbear; I've one, a huge Christmas cactus, now covered in brilliant pink flowers. They make an awful mess!
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
That was a really good frost, all gone now of course. I’m really pleased I went out and photographed it as it wasn’t there long. We’ve also had plenty of rain - not as much as you but enough to flatten most of the spent stems. Christmas cacti look good, a huge one must be impressive - mine are just about over now.

He really loves you, that sweet little Robin ❤🥰 You know when your pond freezes over overnight? Does that mean certain creatures might suffocate coz they can’t get air? I’ve got newts, toads, whirligig beetles, caddis fly larvae and pond snails - I worry about them! 😢I make sure to defrost it as soon as I get up…
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
He certainly loves the food and I think likes to generally hang out with me when I'm out in the garden. I think it's a good idea to clear the pond if you can. It's difficult to know how much the ice affects the pond life - luckily this time the ice didn't last long. Many of my newts leave the pond in August and then hibernate in the back of the garden where there are wood piles and chipped bark, only coming back to the pond in March.

Good Morning Paul and Mr Robin, another crispy frost! I am not a big fan of Winter and frosts but I could teleport there right now to cool off... too bloody hot here! bahahaha! Hmmm I wonder if the Abyssinian will survive, do you think it has a remote chance? such a beauty.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Morning Margaret, the crispy frost has now gone...roll on Spring! I said it wouldn't survive because I have heard it doesn't take lower than 5C - however I'm going to mulch it and see what happens - fingers crossed. Enjoy your 'warm' temperatures lol

Hello, Paul! I must tell you that despite the cold and the recent snowfall, I haven't got many birds in the garden (yet). The reason for that might be the fact that I put out the feeders realtively late, at the beginning od December. I'm still waiting for "my" siskins which usually arrive here after Christmas and stay until mid-February. If you've got some time to spare, you might entertain the idea of coming here and helping me shovel the snow :-)
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
I used to get the siskins for a couple of weeks in February - not seen them this last couple of years unfortunately - hope yours pass by and take advantage of the food you put out. Thank you for your ‘snow’ offer Jolanta - however, after careful thought, I’ve decided to have a ‘snow free’ Winter - wish me luck 😆🥶
@gardensenglishanddance Жыл бұрын
@@paultsworld I forgot to say that your "frosty" garden looks almost as good as the green one. Best of luck without the snow!

@@paultsworld Paul, can I entitle a video "A garden of grasses and perennials"? I'm not sure it is entirely correct.

Hi Jolanta, I think that sounds OK and conveys the meaning you want. I can’t think of a better way of saying it. A garden full of grasses and perennials. I think your phrase is more elegant.

Lovely winter tour. Must say, that dear robin steals the show tho, wish I had some sweet friendly little.birds. I'm leaving my dahlias this yr, I did 2 yrs and lost quite a few. Hoping they'll be good this yr, I am going to move some. We've yet to have a hard frost but ya never know, my Granddaughter is bummed, she said it's turned too warm to enjoy Christmas music.
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
If you want to add extra help for the dahlias maybe cover them when a fair bit of rain is forecast, as it's the wet (then cold) that will kill them. I sometimes do that but I then afterwards I take off the cover because I think the soil needs to 'breath' and be aired. I know what your Granddaughter means - snow is Christmassy and rain dull weather just isn't!
@itsmewende Жыл бұрын
@@paultsworld I'll try to remember to cover some. I do have clay soil, but it's gotten much better over the yrs. The first yr I left them I covered the whole garden with a good layer of wood chips, still didn't save some. Our temps are more like spring than winter, I have dandelions blooming, my coming 14 day forecast has us with, 50 - 58* 8 of those days. Nope not very wintery at all here.

Thanks, Paul, for a lovely video. It's great to see Robin. It's a shame about the banana plant, but I do understand. We still haven't had any substantial frost but I decided to prune my roses anyway and I put the canna in the shed, even so. Your pot plants do so well, do you use a fertiliser? Also what do you mulch your beds with? Thanks again
@paultsworld Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed my video Kim. I will mulch the banana and give it a chance but it all depends on the Winter - would be great if they could survive outside. I do use a fertiliser for the cannas and brugmansias in pots...it's the Vitax 6x which is fantastic but also expensive. This is my affiliate link to it (amzn.to/47OTTW3) You could also use normal horse manure or chicken pellets - I use these amzn.to/41jIvz9 As you know, they grow a lot - so need lots of food - also when I'm watering I often just add a splash of tomorite in the can. For the general beds I use the compost that I make in wooden bins and maybe add some leaf mould if I've got a lot.
