Hi Gary! Ah! Now I see how you get the trains turned around! :) I had all sorts of ideas going around in my head, including going through the wall into the garage and introducing helixes! I like that you've based the track plan on the actual area around Ravenstonedale station! Can't wait to see how you get on with the lift out and removable sections! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, through a hole in the wall 🤣 I laugh but it had crossed my mind but it did not go down well when I suggested it 😉🤣! I have also looked at an incline to go around the room to a lower level below the layout as a storage yard but got complicated! I am apprehensive about the add on baseboard and how it will all assemble together and operate reliably. Cheers Gary

All very interesting Gary. I like the track plan and your solution for the lift out sections to make it work in the room. Good luck with the baseboards construction. I've never had to worry about that not possession any woodworking tools or any space to work in - that's my excuse anyway. Stephen

Hi Stephen, thanks for your feedback in the track plan. The idea seems simple enough for the add on baseboards but I am sure it will be alot more complicated than my simple plan makes it look! As someone that has designed and built alot of layouts. I would recommend a short straight (50mm to 100mm long) between the 3rd radius curve and point 1. This will allow any tension off of bogie wheels and long chassis wagons, as they come off the curve and go into the point, reducing derailment.
@SC68

Hi, Really appreciate your comment and some sound advice, room is tight but I will certainly look to put in a short section between 3rd rad curve and point 1. Reliability is key and certainly don't want to have unnecessary derailments if it can be avoided. Cheers Gary

Hi Gary, really good update and the plans are really good especially to fit in the space you have. I have also got those point motors but I bought them in a kit from Rails of Sheffield which included switches with no soldering involved! They’re a fair bit cheaper than the DCC ones and with the amount I need that’s quite a saving! The only thing I might do differently is replace the insulfrog points in the fiddle yard to electrofrog as it might cut down on any stalling trains. The beer fridge is a perfect feature for the model railway room and who cares if you have to duck under to get at it 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣 Really looking forward to the scenery plans in the next episode. I’ve managed to hurt my shoulder, not sure how, I think I got out of bed awkwardly yesterday so decided to not play golf today so I shall be out in the cabin for a bonus day! Hopefully I’ll finish fixing the raised track bed in place and I’ll start with the track work properly! Cheers for now Gary, John

Hi John, Hope the shoulder is feeling better mate? I do like the look of the point motors but will study in lots more detail when I get around to selecting the right ones for the layout, thankfully I only have 4 to purchase! Yes a bit of a dilemma for the fiddle yard, want to keep electrics to a minimum so considering all sorts of options at moment but good point (Pardon the pun). Scenery is where its form me so want to get to that part ASAP but seems along way off right now! Beer fridge 🍺must not be blocked and totally accessible I agree, beer and trains is the perfect combination for me for chilling out!! Cheers Gary

It was quite common to have freight delivery/collection on a single direction. Freight on the "red line" would be servicing other stations on the line. The only problem I can see is the coal yard servicing - unless you plan to have a horse & stables to facilitate coal wagon shunting, after the main freight leaves for the next stop.
@SC68
@SC68 9 күн бұрын
Hi great insight and I would like to think that this was the case for Ravenstonedale but cannot find any evidence that was the set up. I guess in the 1950's horses would not be doing that work and I believe the cross over was put in well before then. I still have the question that from the up line it can serve the coal yard drop but not the goods shed and vice versa for the down line. Not sure on the answer to this? Maybe I will ask it on my next video to see if anyone know? Cheers Gary

I like how you've created a roundy track plan, nicely designed. It'll all work out for the good when you build the movable part, sounds like an interesting plan too. If it's only for use as a fiddle yard etc, will you use another track, cheaper than the bullhead? Code 75 of course. Gotta budget where you can. Enjoying following your journey on this Gary. Hi Gary, Just been catching up with your videos and exciting times ahead. In regards to the point motors the MTB range may also be worth a look at. The MTB MP4 motors actually have 2 micro switches built in so you could use one for the signals and 1 for the frog power. in regards to the removable section you could use the wire in the tube method for your points but you drill a hole through the top of a slide switch and feed the wire through the hole, that can then be used to move your points as well as using the switch to power frogs, I'm assuming the removable section will have manual points. Just food for thought. All the best Tony. Ps. will you be sporting a scene for Ms Marple to solve LOL!

Hi Gary, interesting solution to the crossover problem; they must have done something similar in the days of the 1898 map. Where was the nearest crossover when there wasn't one at the station? Mind you, I still think it would look better with a crossover between the platforms, where shunting movements would add interest and also be protected by the up and down home signals. Get someone to build you a curved+straight crossover in the right rail type, I think it would look fantastic. Still, your vision, your money! I'm looking forward to seeing it come to fruition.

Hi Clive, I checked the OS map and there are no cross over points until for the several miles that I checked but a few comments from others may shed light on why the track plan is what it is until the cross over was added. Hi Gary…..love your attention to detail. As you’re responsible for setting me off on the ‘n’ gauge trail….I’m sticking with it! Haha. I’ve also gone down the DCC route using Cobalt IP digital point motors, linked to Dapol motorised signals. Also converting/replacing locos to DCC with sound….adds a whole new dimension. Just saying…… On your proposed track plan, is it worth considering slight shortening the viaduct and inserting another set of change over points just before the curve? However which way you go, I’ll be looking forward to following your progress Best wishes Martin

Apologies that I got you into this expensive hobby, I hope that you can forgive me 😉😂. Good to know your a fan of the DCC Cobalt point motors and even better you have them connected to Dapol signals! I might be in touch for some advice, electrics is definitely not my strong point! Not so sure on the sound, its a personal choice really I think they sound good for so long then tend to get on my nerves tbh but maybe when its on your own layout you can switch on and off as you wish. Looked at the shortening of the viaduct and really no room to fit in a pair of straight points but there may be a solution, Bullhead curved points are on the horizon or so I am told! Cheers Gary

Hi Gary, something about this intro grabbed me, so I'll follow you and see where you go. I note that the track plan/OS map you showed - the 1897 revision - had no crossover between the two running lines (which seems impractical - was it an error?). The 1912 OS map shows a trailing crossover west of the goods yard turnout. Was that layout maintained into Era 4, or are you 'borrowing' an earlier layout for more operational interest?

All the best to you for 2025! Cheers Gary

Hi John, Good to be back, got my video mojo back and enjoy doing them once I get back in the swing! Yes scratch building id definitely on the cards but I have a cunning plan as to allow me to crack on with the layout without being held back by scratch builds😉😂. Happy New Year to you an your good lady wife Mrs Exehaven, cheers Gary

Exciting times Gary, I look forward to seeing your progress. I'm sacking KZbin, didn't even make it to 250 subscribers in over a year and 26 videos, some who started at a similar time have 2, 3 or 4,000 subs - couldn't work out what I was doing wrong 🤔All the best, Chris

Hi Chris, Thanks for your comment but sad to hear your sacking KZbin, I must admit my numbers were not great they stayed static for 6 months but no video so not surprised! Stick with it, I must admit I do like to see the subscriber count increase but I really do enjoy making the videos and sharing it with others as that's how I learnt from knowing nothing of the hobby beforehand. Cheers Gary

Lovely part of the world, I've walked many routes around Belah viaduct and over Smardale viaduct- would have loved to have seen Barah before it was demolished. Looking forward to watching your progress with this as modelling somewhere similar is in my mind for when I retire...
