Funny that you need Photoshop to tell you what 18x24 inches at 300 dpi is in pixels. Have you tried a calculator? 18 * 300 is....?

That wasn’t the point of using photoshop, it was to make sure this clunky program was using the same aspect ratio system. I’ve had issues in the past where an old program was locked at less ppi and didn’t change. This was just to compare and confirm with a real program. They made a few changes to this program about 2 years ago, but haven’t done anything since, so I don’t use it anymore. My videos were made with the old version. They aren’t completely accurate anymore. But thanks for checking it out.

Hi, I brought the photo into sketchbook on its own layer, and lowered that layer’s opacity so I could see my pencil lines. Then I made another layer above that one, and traced the shapes. ☺️ I hope this helps

do you have a tutorial of how to create the pencil sketch from a photo?
@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration Жыл бұрын
On this video, at the 3rd time stamp 9:18, is where I explain my pencil sketch process from the photo. The simple line drawing that it starts with was created by importing the photo into Sketchbook, then turning down the opacity of the photo, and then on a new layer I trace the different value shapes (value is how light or dark an area is…) to use as a guide. You don’t have to trace them unless you want to, I just do this to save time. It depends on how comfortable you are and your skill level in drawing from a reference photo and recreating the shapes. The video shows what I do after that step… the shading process. Your version of Sketchbook if that is what you are using, will be slightly different from what is in the video, as it has had an update and has been changed a little. But you can use this same technique with almost any drawing program. 😉 I hope I answered your question. Thanks for reaching out.

@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration Жыл бұрын
Because it’s #3 of a list, so it is jumping into the middle. I made these before KZbin added chapters so I had to separate each from a longer video. Instead of taking the time to criticize, you could look up a different video and move on. I only created these to help people, since there aren’t many for this app. It’s a lot of work making videos, so I’m sure someone who is better at it than I am, has the perfect teaching skills for your way of learning. Everyone is different.

It's the "Copic" option only available on the iPad version? I have an Android tablet. It's an option I'd looove to have, as I use Copics.
@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration Жыл бұрын
I was curious so I looked it up. It seems that the copic brand had made the deal with Autodesk, and this past year they sold sketchbook back to its original developers. So they had to remove the Copic colors feature. That’s too bad, it’s gone for everyone.

I have started a piece that I am tacing off of a paper piece I scanned in. I cannot locate on sketchbook where I can find and adjust the size though. Can you assist me with that?
@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration Жыл бұрын
I suggest making your new canvas first. Then insert your scanned art. There is a transform size icon at the top to change the size of the scanned art layer. That will change its resolution, so if you were planning on keeping it within the final piece, I suggest tracing it and deleting the scanned art layer when you are done. I should also mention, I’m not sure if the desktop version can do vector art either… I replied on your other comment with some decent alternatives;)
@Queenie-the-genie

I guess sketchbook a not a vector program. More like photoshop - so If I want to make a large image for printing I need to get sketchbook on my desktop? I have been using adobe products for at least 25 years now but I am finding this and procreate to be quite interesting. Thank you for posting
@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration Жыл бұрын
I think it’s more like photoshop. It’s not vector, that I’m sure about. Same with Procreate. You need to basically work with it at its largest scale. Two programs you might want to check out if your needing vector based art… Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. Photo is just like Photoshop but it can do vector as well. And Designer is just like Illustrator. They have iPad versions for both that can do a lot of things, and a desktop version that is a great replacement for Adobe products. All are a flat fee price, and they are extremely affordable. I’ve been using affinity on my desktop. My one concern with Sketchbook as of writing this… Autodesk doesn’t own it anymore, it went back to the devs who originally created it. They made the desktop version no longer free, and were supposed to be upgrading the iPad version with a lot of new features, but it’s been over a year and nothing new. So you might want to take that into consideration if you are trying to move away from Adobe. ;)

Do you use a lighter color for sketching the the lighter areas like around the nose? And what were the original settings of the pencil in sketch layer 1? I can’t find it in ur video
@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration Жыл бұрын
For the sketch I use the same pencil, I just use lighter pressure around the nose and other white areas. But I stay away from the whitest areas. I will blend it slightly to have less harsh lines but that depends on the fur texture of the area. So a very light touch with the blending brush. The final step will be with the soft eraser to "paint" in the lighter hairs over the darker ones and make the transition from light and dark more natural and fur like. I can’t remember what exactly the settings were for sketch layer 1, but generally it’s the same as all the other pencil layers. The only setting I change is the size. You can play with the opacity, but the default pencil settings are pretty good already.

Hi, I was just thinking about this a couple of days ago. It’s something I want to learn too… 😉 I just did a search here on KZbin… "How to create art for t-shirts" and lots of interesting videos came up. At a glance it looks like most are using Adobe Photoshop, but the rules/techniques and tips should still apply to any digital art program, including art made on iPad. I have some art pieces I’m working on right now which I thought might be fun for t-shirts… Thank you for asking and reminding me to look into this.

If Sketchbook is available for that tablet the program itself should be the same. I use an Apple Pencil with my iPad, so if you want to draw like you would on paper, you’ll have to see if they sell a Stylus for the Samsung. I’ve never used a Samsung tablet, so I don’t know much about them or how good they do with pressure sensitivity, which gives you that natural drawing feel. Also, to find Sketchbook in the App Store you use, look up just ‘Sketchbook’. Autodesk no longer owns it anymore, so it’s dropped the Autodesk name.

I have an iPad Pro, I’ve tried many times to drag and drop my photo album (iPhoto) into sketchbook. I can’t this to work. What am I doing wrong. It would be great to see photo alongside sketch while working on it.
@MelissaBergIllustration
@MelissaBergIllustration 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, so first I’m assuming you have saved the photo in iPhoto. I like to keep the photo app in the dock. It makes this part easier… Once Sketchbook is open and you have your working canvas ready to go, swipe up from the bottom so the dock appears. Now tap and hold the photos app until a little menu pops up. Ignore the menu and begin to drag the photo app toward the side of the screen where you want the reference photo to be. It will automatically take up half the screen, dividing your screen in half so that you can see both apps open at the same time. There will be a small line along the edge of the photos app (sort of like a little handle) slide that over a little more so that the photos app is only taking up 1/3 of the screen. Now in the photos app you can go to the album and find where you saved the reference photo. Once the reference photo is open you can zoom in and move it around as needed to see things better. I hope this answers your question. 😉

@MelissaBergIllustration

Hi. Unfortunately right now there isn’t a way to select multiple layers. I have run into this problem myself. It is a pain to resize each layer separately. The app has recently been taken over by a new company and they said recently that they plan on adding in many of the requests people have to improve the program. Let’s hope this will be one of the features they add 😉

Yes, that was my first tutorial. I wasn’t sure what to include or how much line art people might want or need. I also had technical issues where my iPad stopped recording the screen without warning and I lost a bunch of the work. So I had to do it all over and try to match it to my voice recording. The dog tutorial is my newest one. I recently got a new computer so I could use that to record my iPad screen instead. I also did some of the voice instruction after I recorded the video so hopefully it is more clear. The dog one is also a different style, with a more advanced sketch tutorial and then a beginner painting tutorial. You might want to try both if you want a bit of a challenge 😉 There are also chapters in that one so you can skip ahead if you want. What other subjects are you interested in drawing? I’m wondering what kind of tutorial I should make next.
