This is great Melissa! Very helpful. i never really understood the "why" 2-3 colors and then erasing you do in your videos. Still think I'll need to watch this one a bunch more to get some of it to sink in, but totally understand the transparent explanation.

flashzonephoto Well I think I just did that once to kind of figure out my values and lighting colors to get everything down quickly and it stuck. I liked the result. But it’s also a little faster like in the case of this illustration there are more darks than lights so when I put the dark layer on top of the light one to get the two value colors in there it is less to “paint”. Painting by erasing? Lol also by lowering the opacity of the dark layer you get your mid tones too. That’s why I do 2 layers. If I do a third it’s usually because I have a dramatic lighting effect (like a turquoise blue which I use in one of the older illustrations) that covers large portions of the figure.

Tips on how to use the perspective grids would be great! Those weird "grids" on the Autodesk app weird.

QuantumBunk They are weird. I will have one coming up, possibly next week? It will be a shorter version of the one included in a video I did a few weeks ago. If you don’t want to wait, you can follow the link in the description of this video. It’s called 10 tips for using Autodesk Sketchbook. It’s around #7 or 8. The pinned comment has time stamps so you can jump right to it 😉 Also, my conclusion on the perspective grids is meh... not great, but usable.
