I always wondered if I had IPS screens on my new 3DS XL when I found out it was even a thing and not gonna lie, it did bother me for a while but then I forgot about it. I played Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright and the colors were absolutely gorgeous. And recently, Luma got updated and now I could easily find out- I was sure it was at least top IPS, but turns out it's both TN. So trust me, you're not missing out.

now, i am a firm believer that the IPS screens are better than the TN ones-- but the difference is so marginal. having IPS screens makes me thing "oh cool, i have an IPS!" but then i look at a 3ds with TN screens and realize that the differences are so damn minute
@SebKaz3 күн бұрын
Well, at least for me, IPS is obviously better. BUT!!.. But.. Here's a little test for you. Play the first level of Shovel Knight on a TN screen and then on an IPS screen. It's not about the viewing angle but about motion clarity. it's more noticeable in 2D pixel art games with scrolling and parallax effects. Most people talk about the different types of screens that exist without knowing anything about the real pros and cons. When you're searching for a screen, just look at pixel response time and motion clarity. Forget about color depth and viewing angles. The first one can easily be adjusted by tweaking color density. The second one, as mentioned in the video, "no one looks at a screen like that." So yeah, if motion clarity and pixel response time don't bother you, just stick with TN. Don't waste your money; TN is good enough.

The amount of people in the comments with IPS screens complaining about "copium" doesnt surprise me, as always. They either dont know or actively ignore that IPS models are calibrated so that they follow the colors of TN, which actually make sense because TN screens are what devs *actually* designed their color palettes for. Or IPS being the only screens with black crushing, therefore flattering the palette in dark games, something which doesnt happen on TN; not to mention how even between panels of the same type, their colors are still a lottery, especially with age. Then theres their lower battery life in a console with an already short battery. The people who managed to get IPS by pure luck and paying a sane price seem to be the only ones to admit that the difference is minimal.

Some argument I heard about it that somewhat made sense was people being upset at nintendo for feeling like they were scammed with inferior parts, like how samsung decided that some people in other countries outside Korea or America were getting inferior chips that heat up and consume more battery. Same model, worse parts. But, again, not exactly the same situation, the TN panels are fine… But I get the sentiment. Now, when it comes to online discourse, the crazy elitism can really blow things out of proportion, like with the 001 vs 101 gamecubes or GBAs people started hoarding during the pandemic while calling each other “001/101 plebs” 😂

Also if you hack your 3DS with Luma you can go into the Rosalina menu and change the screen's color temperature, so you can basically get that better contrast IPS mfs keep yapping about without spending $500+ for an IPS system. not to burst your bubble guy but the whole argument over tn vs ips originated because ips has a way better color accuracy and can display more of the srgb color space so if you want to see the games exactly as the developers intended thats the best way to do it. and as you said the lights in your room could effect it more than the difference is true to the most part but the whole ips having better viewing angles means that it is effected by outside lighting far less than the tn panels.
@DKoldies_CEO_Drew_Scumbag6 күн бұрын
LOL? What do you mean " LIke the devs intended". You think they got IPS screens too or something? All games are mode on a PC. They weren't using a 3DS screen to make the games, LOL!
@beachbaIIs5 күн бұрын
is IPS definitive yes of course however for most it is not an integral part of the experience and if one was super concerned about screen quality it would be more worth while to upscale the game via emulation and if the devs intended for the ips screen to be calibrated with more content on 3ds i do question why did many 3ds models including the last model produced by nintendo the 2ds xl ship with only TN displays my guess on how IPS screens came to be in 3DS systems would be perhaps nintendo had a shortage or was able to get better deals on IPS compared to TN ones this is purely speculation though

@@beachbaIIs As annoying as it is people are price gouging dual IPS models, there are ways to find 3DS units with them for cheaper; you just have to know how to ask people and have a keen eye with the provided pictures. That said, no one needs IPS screens; but they are better for those who notice and care about it. If it doesn't affect you (like you said you can't really notice), then you yourself don't need to care about it. Let others who do go on their hunts or spend extra, that's their deal.
