This is a terrific tutorial. Wonder if you are utilizing Articulation Maps in your DAW/Cubase, and if so, what is your experience? I love the idea how you change the articulation mid note, but does a DAW's articulation map functionally work that way.

I've never used Silka, but for those who have--is it possible to counteract the problem of the baked-in crescendos & decrescendos with volume automation? Specifically, to start the notes loud, decrescendo to the middle, then crescendo to the end? It's a wonderful-sounding library, and at the current price of $98 looks like a steal IMHO.

@@unconditional--love I think Cubase and Logic are probably the most used DAWs in the world today, at least when it comes to orchestral music and cinematic styles. I like both Cubase and studio one, I find studio one the easiest and most intuitive to use by far, but it still isn’t quite as stable and doesn’t offer the same performance as Cubase with really large projects. I reverted back to Cubase recently after the release of Cubase 13, which had some features I’d been wishing for for a while!

Search KZbin for “strezov LOTR prophecy” and you can hear George Strezov use this same library for a really varied piece with very soft AND loud dynamics. Thank you for this review. It's on sale right now at ADSR Sounds for $19.00 until July 4th or 5th (you never know with ADSR; they say July 5th, but they always seem to end their sales before the stated end time). Based on what you showed, though, I think I'll save that $19 and put it towards a better choir. I'm really glad I didn't buy it for $40 from APD a while back. No wonder you didn't make a video for that sales page.
@nomore6167
@nomore6167 Жыл бұрын
Oops, my mistake. Looking again, I see that you DID make a video for it on APD. In that video, you said it had recently been updated to version 2. Do you recall if the issues you mentioned in this video were fixed in that version? You didn't mention any issues in the APD video, but I don't know if that's because the issues were fixed or because you were specifically promoting the product. Basically, I'm just starting out (haven't actually written anything yet; everything is still in my head), so I can't afford a full choir with the $300+ price tag that goes with it. Right now, I'm looking primarily for a female voice/choir to use as backing material for ambiance/instrumental tracks. If the issues you mentioned in this video have been fixed, then $19 would seem like a good investment for that purpose, and then I can wait to see what kind of deals happen during this year's holiday season.

Why are all the examples slow, evenly played values? After all, choral music is rhythmically varied! How does this program deal with variable values in selected, diverse syllables? Do only such even notes sound good? I'm afraid so, because I don't see varied rhythmic examples anywhere. This is not how choral music is made, and the instrument is used to check how it sounds!

It’s a very specific library, made for a specific sound and style. Long, flowing notes, but it does have some shorter syllables and triplets. I purchased it to do slower and more atmospheric film/video game music, not actual choral performances, so the long arcs I’m playing here are simply not designed to recreate fast, agile, or energetic passages.

I bought the Dominus Choir and the 8dio Insolidus choir (which is the precursor to Silka). I deeply regret getting the 8dio Insolidus choir. It is very limited and can be very expensive. Please realize the 8dio has a very strict NO-REFUND policy as well. Once again, it can be very expensive and once you have it, you keep it. If you don't like it, there's no way to get your money back. I hope this helps to prevent someone from spending a lot of money and getting stuck with something they don't like... The Dominus choir is incredibly versatile compared to 8dio. If you get the Dominus Choir Pro, you will be even more amazed. With the Dominus Choir you have the ability to choose what you want. I consider it the best phrase building choir software out there. Nothing comes close. (Edited 4/18/2024): After working with Insolidus and now also having Silka, Lacrimosa, and Liberis choirs; I can say that they do sound beautiful, but are limited to each phrase builder built in. Some are more restrictive than others. I will get the Requiem choir later on as well. I no longer regret getting the Insolidus choir. I do mainly use it for uh's and ah's. For that, it is very good quality. Please wait for their special sales. I don't consider them to be worth the full individual price, sounds harsh, but I want to be honest. Concerning Dominus Choir & Pro, I still believe nothing else is out there that can compete with it at the moment. I consider it the industry's best at the moment. It's incredible in so many aspects and quality. I look forward to any updates or upgrades.

Yes, I definitely agree with Dominus being so much more versatile and usable as a soft choir library over Insolidus and Silka. Silka can really nail it when it works, but it’s just fickle to work with and is way overpriced. To be fair, I do want to point out the no-refund policy however is standard across the board with Kontakt libraries and any sample library with very few exceptions (VSL, realitone, these are the only companies I’ve seen offer a 14 or 30 day refund period for sample libraries).

This fiddle shootout is useful if all you care about is sounds, but if you're an actual musician and the interface matters, then forget it. I bought Red Room's bluegrass fiddle (This video was the clincher) and boy am I sorry. The interface is cumbersome, not intuitive, and just plain clumsy. Why is it that reviewers rarely talk about the usability of software? If you're a musician don't purchase Red Room's fiddle. Had I been able to test drive it, I would have known then to avoid it. That said, it's only strength are the quality samples. Don't be fooled by the elaborate interface functionality because it's a bear to actually use.

@@bfree45 I've been using Native Instrument software for years and they're well designed. I use key switches with NI and other 3rd party products. To me, Red Room's interface design is poor because it depends way too much on an elaborate key switching arrangement that, as a musician is like learning an instrument that is harder to play than the fiddle! Also, their manual and KZbin Walk-Thru shows standard reference information, but are sorely lacking workflow information. We could say that's industry standard, but once I went beyond using the 1st 4 articulations, those beautiful ornaments are a hassle to cobble together for a song. Not worth the trouble. Your review is spot-on regarding sounds, so I don't fault you on that, I wish you could have presented more specifics on the intertace.
