I'd go a step further and say that Perturabo and Dorn were incredibly similar. I believe they could have gotten along, because Perturabo never really hated Dorn as a person, he hated what he represented. Dorn was Perturabo, but without the trauma. He was the pragmatic, focused and stoic man of duty Perturabo wanted to be, but couldn't because of his emotional baggage. Where Dorn didn't care for accolades, recognition or the attention of the Emperor, yet received them all the same, Perturabo craved them, yet he was ignored. Dorn being chosen as the architect for the Imperial Palace was the final nail in the coffin. Dorn was a great builder, but not an architect by heart. He accepted because he saw it as his duty. Perturabo was an architect by heart, most likely a better one than Dorn, yet he was passed over because he wasn't considered trustworthy enough. Had Dorn been better with people, had he recognized the bitter resentment aimed at him which was building up inside his brother, had he made moves to reconcile, there's a good chance Perturabo would have never betrayed the Imperium.

A fact you absolutely do not need: I took a few plague marine minis, painted them in Iron Warriors colours with the yellow part of the hazard stripes traded for green and I have myself the Corroded Warriors warband, deployed alongside the Death Guard during the Siege of Terra where they took interest in the resilence granted by the favour of Nurgle and they ditched their douche of a dad and effed off with the Death Guard.

I love the Iron Warriors because, among all the forces of Chaos, they have the most relatable goal: they hate the Imperium, and want to see it crumble one mortar shell at a time. They haven't been corrupted, they aren't insane or utterly enslaved to their own worst impulses. They are men on a mission, and are willing to fight in the mud for all eternity if it means seeing it through. And you know what? That is quite admirable and relatable, especially for people in-setting. The Imperium sucks, and I can totally see mortals pledging their service to the Iron Warriors for the chance to fight back against their former oppressors.

I think this idea of the Primarch changing the legion can also apply to the World Eaters because I've heard that the World Eaters were originally meant to be identical in both appearance and behavior of Medieval Knights/Crusaders they only became the bloodthirsty berzerkers they're known for was after their Primarch introduced them to the Butcher's Nails.

I do appreciate seeing people talk about the better aspects of many of the astartes legions, as the Iron Warriors are much like what the Iron Hands were supposed to be, strong and competent rather than just being assholes and all that other nonsense for no reason. Real Iron Warriors are like General Castor from DoW2: Retribution, being more "I'm not afraid to spend my men's lives, but I never waste them." And not to get into too silly of territory, but I was trying to work on a story of an alternate Heresy that turned about a fair bit better, but was still pretty bloody and all that. But in it, I was going to try to give a few of the primarchs actual children of their own, though most of them would be from forms of cloning and all rather than the old fashion methods. But I was going to have had Perturabo have basically cloned a son using part of his DNA and that of a woman who was on of the only people he actually respected in his time before the Emperor found him. The long and short of his character would be not so much a nasty asshole like his father, but more like a younger Barbarus Dantioch, where he does try to lessen the extremes of his father's demand on his legion, but it's more out of a sense or respect for the men and hating to waste resources. And this garners him resentment from his father but also a lot of respect from many astartes in the Iron Warriors legion, to the point where when the Heresy breaks out, the son just manages to escape with like 6-8,000 loyalist Iron Warriors to his cause. I didn't have any intention of making him into a Salamander or something, but more like a pragmatic but still respectable leader of men.

Iron Warriors are about working until your arms fall off. They're about the excruciating toil of hard industrial work. 2:04 I'm going to have to disagree on this one. Dantioch had 30 Iron Warriors under his command when the Heresy broke out. Eight loyalists escaped the Schadenhold alive. One was an ultramarine. A second (the Dreadnought) died on the enemy flagship Benthos before they could escape to the warp. They took two Iron Warriors and a Son of Horus prisoner. At most, that's nine legionaries worth of gene seed. Source: The Iron Within. The smallest number of marines recorded to have found a chapter was 97, those being the Dark Hunters. The math simply doesn't add up for Dantioch's band to have been the origin of a Second Founding chapter. I'm of the opinion that the Silver Skulls are instead from the 114th Grand Battalion of the Iron Warriors. The 114th is one of two known instances where traitors that realized they chose their loyalties poorly and subsequently switched sides (the other being the Anchorite). Notably, they actually had the numbers to be a real force, having landed on the Forge World of Mezoa with about 2000 marines and being subsequently grinded down during the ensuing battle. Still, when they did switch sides, their numbers (along with a Knight House kept in reserve) were enough to send a much larger force of Alpha Legion running for their lives, suggesting that their numbers were at least chapter or multi-company strength. More notably, we literally don't know what happened to them after the Scouring, and their modern chapter home world appears to be quite close to Mezoa, their base of operations in the HH. TLDR: The numbers don't add up for Dantioch, but there is a reasonable alternative to consider.

Iron Warriors are the epitome of the saying, "Shit rolls downhill". Treated like shit, given shit orders, Perty took this realization out on his sons, who in turn took it out on wherever they landed. His sons and him were NOT meant for combat, they were meant for inventing, constructing, building, the opposite of their charge, hence why they lacked. Since YOUTH, Perturabo's motivation was to improve the lives of citizens, NOT what the Emperor made him out to do like the jackass he sometimes is. They could've been something better, they could've been the iron reinforcement for the Salamanders and the Iron Hands who could've forged something better for the Imperium. His brothers looked down on him because they didn't see his potential, he was forbidden from it and that bitterness cultivated itself into what we see today. A broken legion shielding themselves behind a facade, like the Iron Hands behind their augments to cover their pain, the Legion uses their brutality to dull the pain that'll never truly go away. Despite this, I'm still glad to see Pert hasn't given up on his designs, those aspirations are still there even if they're tainted by the Emperor's misbegotten interference.

Ah, the iron 4th. My personal favorite traitor legion. If you read hammer of Olympia, you see that perturabo has one of the worst effects on his legion, save for angron. He combines the neglectful utilitarianism of the Lion with his sons and the stubborn determination of the Imperial fists, held together by perturabo’s own ego. Perturabo, as his own foster sister called out, cultivated a martyr’s complex, wanting admiration and validation, but not wanting to put forth the effort to form relationships that would facilitate said admiration. He would devolve into blind rages if events transpired outside of his logical planning, killing a messenger who warned him of Olympia’s revolt. He, like his sons at the end of the day, only saw black and white, not the grey that most of life is colored in. It’s only after Olympia’s destruction and the murder of his adopted family did perturabo come to see his mistake, but as the saying goes, in for a penny. I personally would love a parallel to lion’s mellowing out with the risen with perturabo. Maybe the iron warriors don’t rejoin the imperium, but become a 3rd party.

I'm not sure I agree with your interpretation this time, saying what they should have been is the metric by which we should judge be is incorrect, what they are in the setting is not what they were or were intended to be. Much like the world eaters you are right that the tragedy is about the fall, and that fall being directly attributable to a broken abusive father figure, but much like the the world eaters being broken war hounds the Iron warriors are broken corpse grinders. They are brutal they are cruel but they are not needlessly so except when they are being petty and spiteful just like daddy. Most of the evil of the iron warriors comes out of them being efficient, they are like the brutality of the industrial revolution. And to an extent even Hounsu was being efficient, his warband and the legion it's self needed a new large scale source of gene-seed and he found a way even if he had to grind up a population like and industrial revolution on steroids to get it.

In many ways, the Iron Warriors are even worse than the legions dedicated to specific Chaos gods. They can at least argue they fumbled ignorantly with something they didn’t understand. But Perturabo? He chose it. Even after lecturing Angron about being a slave, even after lecturing Fulgrim, even after witnessing the Heresy and all that, he chose it anyway. The community likes to play devil’s advocate for the Iron Warriors, crafting them post hoc justifications for the things they did, and even blaming Olympia for Perturabo strangling her during one of his tantrums because she failed to be obsequious enough for his fragile little ego. And even after that ugly betrayal, they treat Perturabo as the victim of his own evil rather than the source of it. He’s not a bad character like, say, Jon Grammaticus or something. The whole point of perturabo is that he isn't mature ! That's the only reason why he betrayed the emperor (that and the fact he is a coward). He was wise, and still is but his lack of maturity made him what he is. And he is pretty well written like that. What would you want to make him ? A mature perturabo would recognise his wrong and try to fix his mistakes, but he is a demon now, bound to his false gods and servant of their will.

In one of the short stories featuring Honsu on Medrenguard (which I haven't read personally because of how extremely rare it is, so keep in mind that all of this information is at least partially unreliable), Puterabo is a largely improved character from his heresy counterpart. Granted, he does threaten to murder Honsu if he fails, but around that, he does give him some excellent advice both as a leader and a strategist, and even keeps his shit together when called out on his heresy era pettiness. I really hope that if he is properly brought back into the setting, GW keeps with this angle, because I really like this more mature version of him.

Ooooohhhh no. The Iron Warriors are absolutely evil. In fact, I think the only two factions that have a claim to being more evil are the Drukhari and the Word Bearers; even the Night Lords have more humanity (though to be fair they have the Omnibus and the IW have no comparable story). Maybe once upon a time they were simply the broken workhorses of the Imperium, but they are a Legion of monsters now. What's more, the IW were almost completely responsible for all their problems, especially after Pert came back.
