(Sorry, I tend to ramble and go on tangents a lot. TLDR of this comment is that people will often accuse dark mahou shoujo stories of being "edgy PMMM wannabes", but that comparison is usually baseless and you shouldn't let it effect how you write your work!) As a writer (not for dark magical girl stories, specifically; I mostly write urban-fantasy and/or dramedies), I'd say the tips in this video are really good advice, not just for dark magical girl stuff, but I think most of them would work for any sort of character-driven story with stakes! :D "Dark mahou shoujo" (and other "dark" takes on more typically lighthearted genres) is a genre I like in theory, but in practice I find them very hit-or-miss. Most of the ones I tend to enjoy (Day Break Illusion, Magical Girl Raising Project) tend to be really unpopular, while the ones I didn't really vibe with (Madoka Magica, Yuki Yuna) are usually considered to be among the greats of the genre. And that's fine, everyone's free to like or dislike whatever works of fiction they want, and it shouldn't discourage creators from creating whatever they want to make! Ok, these next few sentences are gonna be context for the point I'm getting to, and while I'm framing them as "If I were giving my own suggestions", they are not actually that. I understand they're kinda biased and way more subjective than anything in this video, lol. If I were giving my own tips, I'd almost be tempted to say "give the antagonists personalities and goals, too". I think a large part of why I enjoyed DBE and MGRP but didn't really enjoy PMMM or YuYuYu comes down to that DBE's daemonia and MGRP's enemy magical girls have thoughts, feelings, emotions, dialogue, goals and everything else that the protagonists have, whereas PMMM's witches and YuYuYu's... whatever the zodiac monsters were called, didn't. But, well... there's a reason I'm not the one giving tips. While I like certain mahou shoujo works, I have no particular affinity to the genre itself, and I am a firm believer in writing the story you'd like to read and not preaching what you don't practice, so I have no authority here, I guess. /lh /hj (Not that there's anything wrong with anyone offering their own personal advice about how to write a dark magical girl story, or any other kind of story, so long as said advice is constructive and given without malice.) And the fact that the magical girls shows I like tend to be the ones most people REALLY don't like is an indication to me that if I were to offer my own advice, it'd probably just lead to someone writing the next dark magical girl series that gets labelled a "Madoka wannabe" or "edgy trash". ^_^; ...Which does bring me to the one piece of genuine advice I would give to someone writing a dark mahou shoujo, completely devoid of my own preferences within the genre or any other such factors: "Don't worry about people calling your story a Madoka Magica rip-off. It happens to literally every dark magical girl writer." Which I know will probably sound super specific to anyone who isn't aware of the genre's reputation, but this is legitimately a unique problem that I've never seen from any other genre or fandom. Whether or not someone likes Magical Girl Raising Project or Madoka Magica, for example, it's pretty hard to deny - especially if you've read the original novels - that Magical Girl Raising Project is doing its own thing, which just so happens to involve killing a few magical girls along the way. Madoka is a cosmic-horror while Raising Project is a political-drama following on from a battle-royale story. But about 2 seconds of looking up reviews for MGRP will result in hundreds of people bashing the series for "trying to copy Madoka Magica" (while hilariously pointing out the many ways in which the two series differ and saying that Raising Project is bad because it "didn't actually rip-off any of the good parts of PMMM"). I know "don't worry about fan reactions to your story" isn't a "writing tip", more so than it is just general advice for writers. Like, telling people not to worry about comparisons isn't gonna change how they write their story, especially when I'm saying that people comparing every dark magical girl story to Madoka Magica is inevitable. While I started this comment saying that I've never written anything in the dark mahou shoujo genre, I DO have an idea for one churning in my mind, and I KNOW that if I ever put it out into the world that someone's gonna say "This is a Madoka Magica rip-off because bla, bla, bla!" So this comment is just me trying to reassure any writers with that same fear that it's ok, and that people's insinuations that everything's a "rip-off" are extremely common and utterly baseless. Write the dark mahou shoujo story you've always wanted to see! Whether you take inspiration from Madoka Magica or any other series, or if the idea is entirely original, I'm sure it's going to be a great work with its own unique merits that set it apart from other works in the genre!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! This was very interesting to read, and I liked hearing your perspective. Personally, I think all dark magical girl series have their own ways of standing out. Despite the fact that Madoka Magica is one of my all time favourite animes, I feel like every magical girl anime stands apart well on its own and has unique qualities. To me, it feels the same as Sailor Moon being compared to many other magical girl series, simply because Sailor Moon popularised the genre. I do hope that people decide to try creating their own magical girl manga or novel, and not feel reluctant or worried about it being too close to another magical girl series. I think this genre is one with a lot of potential for unique storytelling! Your comment has made me interested in watching Magical Girl Raising Project, one magical girl series that has been on my list for a while, but I haven't yet watched. A political-drama magical girl story sounds fascinating!

@@midnightXcross I'd definitely agree that every dark mahou shoujo I've seen stands-out! FLIP FLAPPERS (which I didn't really have a natural segue for in my initial comment, due to it actually being well-liked, lol) is another favorite of mine, and I've yet to see another anime - let alone another dark mahou shoujo - that dissects human psyche quite like FF does! I'd say FF is definitely on the fine line between "dark magical girl anime" and "regular magical girl anime with a couple of darker moments". Honestly, now that I think about it, the frequent negative comparisons some people make between PMMM and other dark magical girl series is very similar to how people used to call every "mon" series (Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon and such) "Pokémon rip-offs". From what I can tell, that trend's died-off a bit, and I hope the same happens with the Madoka "rip-off" assertions. I think Madoka Magica, like every other dark mahou shoujo, should be praised (or criticized, if that's how one feels about it) on its own merits, instead of by how it stacks up against shows with similar premises! I highly recommend Raising Project! I personally loved the first arc (which is the one the first season covers in its entirety), but a lot of people, even those who like the later novels, find it underwhelming or even boring. And, yeah, that's subjective, but I personally had a blast with it; it's within my top 15 favorite anime, lol! The political-drama that the novels are known-for is barely present until the second arc (which does have an upcoming anime announced) and doesn't become a primary focus until the third, for what that's worth. Although I'd say the first arc is a very enjoyable battle-royale in its own right, and the second arc (which is also my favorite) is both the most gripping whodunnit and the most gripping isekai that I've ever watched or read! It's a genre combination that I never imagined could work, but "magical girl murder-mystery set inside a video-game" is definitely a unique sales-pitch, and I actually ended-up crying at the epilogue chapter. XD

@@WolfOfWalfas Flip Flappers sounds great! I haven't heard of that series before, but it seems like one I would enjoy. I think a more modern example of anime comparison is with survival game anime. For example, a lot of series like Tomodachi Game or Talentless Nana are coming out now, but they inevitably end up being compared to each other, or Squid Game. I suppose it is like when Isekai started gaining popularity, and then the comparison was isekai anime against Sword Art Online. I think that as anime grows and more and more series come out, people will always try to compare them. However, as new genres gain popularity, the series that were previously compared stop being judged as much. I definitely agree that anime, especially magical girl, should be viewed for its own merits, rather than compared to other series! After all, everyone has their own likes and dislikes when it comes to anime they enjoy.

@midnightXcross
@midnightXcross 4 күн бұрын
Thank you! So are you a writer working with an artist, or are you doing both parts of the process? If you're working with an artist, it depends on how much creative freedom you want the artist to have with it. Some scriptwriters prefer to outline what occurs in each panel or draw a storyboard before working with an artist. Even a really rough draft can help an artist to visualise what you want to achieve with the artwork. This video, which covers different scriptwriting methods, may help with that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIjMfI2Fm9F9bs0 If you are doing both parts of the process, but feel like your writing skills are stronger, then consider how you can use art to assist with the storytelling medium. Consider how you can show your story using character reactions and body language, and how as a writer, you would present these things that would typically be described, through art instead. It may also help if you read manga with this mindset in focus.

I know I'm late to the questions but I wanted to ask two questions, the first is tips on how to write villainous protagonists and how to add themes to your story and how many could I add
@midnightXcross
@midnightXcross 9 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! In regards to villainous protagonists, that is quite a complicated topic, so I might make a more detailed video about this in the future. As for adding themes to your story, a theme is a kind of message or moral that you put through the story. For example, if the theme was about finding hope in the midst of difficult times, you would show characters experiencing difficult times and then finding hope during those events. For the theme, it can be helpful to choose a message that is important to you, that you could convey through the story itself. Adding a theme can help bring meaning to the story overall, and help a story connect more to the audience. 😊

@adamshafeeq8685 My apologies! I tried to answer as many questions as possible, but some of them were a bit too involved to answer within a single video. In regards to your question, you asked how I feel about my channel not doing as well as it did a few years ago. For this Q&A I wanted to focus more specifically on questions about creating a manga or light novel, which is why I didn't answer it directly in the video. However, I will answer it here. To be honest, I've never really created videos for the numbers. My channel has never been monetized, because I create these videos out of passion and for a joy of creating. For me, my videos have been a way of documenting my journey as I learn more about creating manga and telling stories. So I don't really mind if my channel is not getting as many views as it did in the past. In the past, I had more time to be able to put towards my channel, but with me focusing more of my attention on my book, it takes me a lot longer than it used to to create videos and edit those videos. However, in the future, I do hope to remake some of those videos. But I want to make it clear that I do this because I love creating, and I want my content to reflect that. Even if my videos got 100 views or even less than that, it wouldn't stop me from creating things because I want to. 😊 If you put 100 people in a room, that is already a lot! Once again, my apologies for not answering right away. I did intend to reply, I was just focusing my attention on editing this video.

@MntDewEyes
@MntDewEyes 9 күн бұрын
I know multiple writers have talked about times they've lost passion in what they write and different strategies for getting through it. Brandon Sanderson has said specifically that he considers "discipline to be one of the secrets to success." He explained that part of what he had to learn to do was to write when he didn't feel like it, to force himself into that creative mindset when he didn't feel like it. Also important to keep in mind that every writer is different so what advice might work for someone might not work for you. I would say yes, keep writing anyways. But maybe your situation is different. Maybe for you it's a better idea to take a break, or to work on another project that you're interested in. good luck

I should have watched this four years ago when writing became relevant in my life. I should probably reformat what I have of my memoir novel as a memoir light novel, as the source script is very heavy on dialogue and internal monologue, and some contextual details are missing, so the content would be best conveyed in a LN format. Thank you for sharing this!

You will probably hate me, because as an amateur, after my initial idea of writing an isekai that doesn't regurgitate the same braindead tropes from 10 years ago, I started researching genre and anime clichés with the help of ChatGPT, came up with creative ways to reincorporate them as part of the world building. After that I moved on to generating quick bios based on my first two inspired characters for an interesting roster, then I discarded some flaccid ones, improved on the rest, added a few, and eventually ended up with a ragtag group not specifically tailored to fulfill power fantasies in "another world". This way I can play out social dynamics, tug on the psychodrama, and stir internal conflict beside the environmental challenges related to the exploration arc. I wasn't sure about the format, or even the language at first, but I decided to go with my second language (English) for broader adaptability if anyone ever found it worthy. Of course I'm only on a conversational level, so I will probably keep using any and all samples and crutches I can get, because although I've never written a Light Novel, the format seems perfect for what and how I want to convey, and... Yeah, here I am. Thanks for the help! 😊

Do you know that international manga contests held by Japan are just a gimmick? There's no way Japan would make non-Japanese works popular in Japan. Japanese mangakas don't want to be replaced by foreign mangakas. Never listen to weaboos saying non-Japanese are not allowed to make manga-style comics. Every country should realize that Japanese anime industry can contribute around 22 billion US dollars to Japan economy in 2023 (if I'm not mistaken). That's a lot of money. Every country should build and nurture their own comics and anime industry. Or many countries can unite to make their own comics and anime industry. For example: USA can cooperate with European countries or Mexico or Brazil to make one platform to accommodate comics or anime from different countries. Come on, the world needs fresh air. We want to see American comics/anime or Italian comics/anime or Egyptian comics/anime or British comics/anime or Turkish comics/anime or Nigerian comics/anime or Mexican comics/anime or Brazilian comics/anime etc, not just Japanese manga/anime. So, if you non-Japanese want your works to get published by Japanese companies, just give up, because mostly Japanese manga/anime supremacy exists in Japan.

You see cars driving, police pulling people over and motels along the outskirts. And some other cool stuff taken from the story. All spliced in between edward walking from the prison bus, to the prison. He is in a prison wear(orange jumpsuit) The title appears. And fades to Edward as he is eating at fast food restraunt. A guy cones in stumbling with a bleeding arm. He escapes out the back. Edward stands up, he is rushed by police and tackled to the floor. And is arrested for a crime he didnt commit. All the while the perp has escaped. Edward was mistaken for a guy running from the police. And the perp turned out to be a killer, and killed a women just 3 weeks prior. Mission 1. Edward has to get used to the cycle of prison life. Your first 'mission' is just getting used to being in the county jail. Eventually you are transported to prison awaiting trial. Maybe you choose to join a gang etc. Maybe you dont. Part 2. Edward finds himself plastered all over the news. He has no idea how the cops could just let the real perp go. You would be trying to prove your innocence. You go through court system etc. And find out just how corrupt the system is, as someone has been setting you up further. And even the judge has been paid off. You have no idea how this is happening. It is just crazy. So, you adapt and settle in. Part 3 of the story takes you to finding out through your lawyer, that theres something bigger at play here. Someone wants you to stay in there. Or worse. dead. You come to find out there is a price on your head, Put there by the lady who was killed's very much alive 'husband.'. He wants revenge. And will stop at nothing to keep you inside. I stopped writing here. As I just want an idea from you guys, what kinda game wouod this story be good for? Like what style? I mean it has to play good. What you guys think?

I'll be honest bud, this sounds like a good tv show, not sure how it would work in a game. To bad they don't have work shops for people who are not in w industry but want to meet people to work on projects with. good luck man
