I speak Chinese and English, but I do have many friends who can only speak French, Spanish or Vietnamese, so I always have the translation app on my cellphone. I have google translate on my phone too, it seems it has online translating only, which might cause the difficulty when you do not have internet connection. Some other translation app has offline function, which enable you to download the language packs prior to your travel. It is very useful. I think the latest version of translater has function that you don't need to push button anymore, if you select two languages, it can automatically translate to the other one. My wife used to download one when she traveled to Mexico.

I used this translator device while traveling oversees in Japan and found that it very easy to have conversations with others since the translation was near instant and it didn't require an internet connection to work.
