I'd like to hear one dropped maybe an octave, to be a little easier on my old ears.

I think the air texture would be different at the time of the original instrument so maybe it sounded a lot different.

When I listen to this it really makes me wonder about just how different the mindset of the people contemporary with the instrument and music was, because music just like anything made by humans develops over time and builds on what comes before. When people today listen to this music, maybe we get a historical feel from it. I don't know why it makes me think of Hampton Court Palace for some reason, but if this was your contemporary sound, I can't imagine what your mind would be like. It's so interesting.

Wonderful sound and performance. In a general way, without referring to specific types of both instruments, I prefer the virginal's sound upon that of the harpsichord. I admit not knowing why :) - Thanks for uploading.

Beautiful playing and sound. I have a spinet but a few of the keys won't return after playing. It appears that the mechanism isn't falling back under the string. Do you have any tips for adjusting this please?
@clementmatchett2 жыл бұрын
The key levers just rock on a pin which engages with a hole in the lever. Try easing the hole with a bradawl or a suitably-sized nail, taking care only to ease it along the longitudinal axis. If that doesn’t work, get a small piece of lead sheet and glue it to the underside of the key lever towards its distal end.

Congratulations on the work. I love to build keyboard instruments (a pipe organ, a truhenorgel and a clavichord as you can ti se in my KZbin page) now I'm interested in building a virginal and ask her if it's possible to have measurements. Thank you

Fine ancient analogue plugged string keyboard and very soulful played suitable composition on it. 🎹

this instrument is simply fantastic. No sampler can reproduce this etheric but warm analogue sound of real plugged strings brought in tension in this nice real ancient small keyboard instrument. Thanks for sharing 🎵
@CandiceGoddard Жыл бұрын
Are you saying that the spinet is an "ancient" keyboard or that the one in this video is ancient, because that's a modern reproduction and it looks it. It looks very new.
@ingorichter649 Жыл бұрын
@@CandiceGoddard The instrument played here is a reproduction of the "ancient" analogue string based technology called "spinet". Together with hapsicord, virginal and clavicord a noble family of keyboards typically belongs to baroque and rokoko - art - period.

I have made 4 Queen Elizabeth Virginals. I find the register glued to the soundboard spoils the tone. I have extended the length to allow the bass strings to be higher tension and am about to have a thin register in the soundboard and another separate below to guide the jacks. Your opinion would be valuable.

I love the sound of this little virginal--somewhat to my surprise, because I've heard other ottavini which set my teeth on edge. What's the difference--besides the touch of the skilled builder and sensitive musician? Why the pure thirds of quarter-comma meantone temperament, what else? So simple, yet so essential!
