Omg jen, what a fantastic idea, I might be doing that and slapping some decoupage paper on the surface, there's an idea. You better be writing this instructional book of cardboard keepabels with pics, and of course your you tube page links, etc. Lol. Come check our live out tonight at 7, we are having @ArtDecoFurniture on, this guy is going to go viral! See what it really is. Plus this guy has tricks and tips I wished i knew a long time ago. If not tonight check it out sometime, because we would love to have you on our live sometime.

Aw, my friend you are the best! I'll give it some thought. I must say, though, most of my cardboard projects take a long time to finish because of dry time. Not sure how that might work on a live 🤔 Once we're moved in the spring my crafty side is going to come out in droves though so that might be the time! I'll let you know! 🥰📦

You we’re lucky not to break your piece. Next time all you have to do is pour a little hot water over the back of the plastic to create “ the effect of the plastic setting “ to remove the piece of cement from the mold.

This stuff is seriously tough, I wasn't worried about banging it around. I'm not a gentle person either so if it broke before setting then it wasn't meant to be anyway. As it is, I've had this ever since and still use it regularly! However, that's a great tip for something more delicate. Thanks!

Hi there is air under the cement at the top of the container. You introduce it to the air of mother earth by sliding a thin metal object in the rim between the mould and set cement/ concrete. Then the item will release itself and slide out. Xxx

I didn't seal mine because I wasn't concerned about them lasting a long time or getting actual use. Nail polish on a slick surface like glass will flake away with time. If you want them to last they should be sealed. Either way, these are decorative only.

With plastic you probably want to scuff sand the entire surface and use a bonding primer. Let that fully cure according to package instructions then I see no reason you couldn't do this technique. Good luck!

I wouldn't use cooking spray as the oils in a food grade product might not wash away from a porous concrete surface and could go rancid over time.

What a great finish you ended up doing!.....I have done this with the same results with cracking. . Air dry clay relies on quick evaporation (which makes it desirable) because of shrinkage it can't pull away and stay together when on the outside of an object so it cracks. I found very slow drying either a damp cloth or under a plastic tub helps and a cooler place also trying a humidifier next time to see if that helps on really dry days. ☺️
@CopperCactusCrafts
@CopperCactusCrafts Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Also, thanks for the explanation, that makes perfect sense. The water evaporates and the clay will constrict. I appreciate the tips for ways to reduce cracking. Can't wait to do more experimenting!

I'm totally new to clay sculpting and haven't even made anything yet. I was thinking of using glass bottles as a core to save on clay. However, I saw a youtube video where it was mentioned that air dry clay shrinks a lot, which is why people use things like aluminum foil with masking tape over it or paper mache, and then remove it to allow for the shrinkage when it dries. Since the glass bottles don't shrink, the cracks form.
@CopperCactusCrafts
@CopperCactusCrafts Жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense. As the water evaporates from the solid ingredients the pull-back occurs. Clay is a fun medium and I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with different ideas. Thanks so much!

(or at least, dr. google says shed said so 🤭) unfortunately, we didn't get to that lesson - they didn't like the ADC, but they loved macrame, so we stayed with that one. I tried it for my own art projects and knowledge. Tried modeling paste mixed with golden acrylic, but it didn't work that well. I've got a few more ideas - let you know what worked in the end.
