I saw your video when you first released it. I know how excited you are. I too am waiting on my long-term visa, (DTV) 5 years for Thailand. Shouldn't be too much longer.

Two weeks ago I would've agreed with her. Since 1989, my dream's been to live in London. When I visited in May 2017, it reignited my desire to live there. I spent months trying to sort out a way to do it. Finally, I found one: digital animation. I found a school in London that offered 6 mos courses in digital animation so I signed up. I was to start in Nov. '19. That intake was cancelled due to low enrolment, so I was placed in the next intake scheduled to start in April '20. The start date of that intake was pushed to June '20. I sold everything I owned except clothes & laptop & moved from Seattle to London in May '20. Two weeks after I arrived, the school cancelled the course because they couldn't safely deliver it due to COVID. I was gutted, almost suicidal. I gave up so much to follow that dream. I didn't have a back-up plan because I was so sure that I'd be successful. I didn't want to return to Seattle so at the suggestion of a friend, I moved to Palm Springs. (I no longer live there.) Another friend suggested I live for 6 mos each in Palm Springs & London. That worked for 2 years & the second year was incredibly difficult to find affordable housing. During those 2 years, I'd hoped to meet someone in London, fall in love, get married & settle down. That didn't happen. FYI, Americans can only reside in the UK for 180 days without a Visa. A London acquaintance told me that I needed to move to London & right before the 180 days expired, take a short trip outside of the UK, then return to "reset the clock" on my passport. He knew someone from Mexico who had done it. You have to continue doing it for 5 years & at that point, you can apply for permanent residency. However, there's no guarantee you'll be approved. I felt it was too risky. What if I get caught whilst trying to re-enter the UK after one of the trips? Since 2022, I've been languishing. No city in the US will ever compare to London. Earlier this year, I thought maybe I should take the risk & give the 180 days idea a try. But I still feel it's too risky so again, I gave up. Before you take this woman's advice to continue pursuing your dreams, ask yourself these questions: Does it still align with you? Think about whether the dream still fits your life & who you are now. Is it still joyful? Consider if you still feel the same passion & purpose for the dream as you did when you started. Think about whether the dream is realistic. Do you have a specific step-by-step plan to achieve the dream? Does it make you feel bad? If pursuing the dream makes you feel like a failure or ashamed, it might be time to stop. Ask yourself if pursuing this dream is worth it. To answer this, you need to really examine the true cost of pursuing the dream - for example, does it take too much from other areas of your life? And if you let go of it, what could become possible? Can you envision a solution? If you can't see a way to resolve the issues causing frustration, it might be time to consider giving up. Have you lost touch with your values? If you've become so focused on achieving the dream that you've lost sight of the values that inspired it, it might be time to reconnect. Can you reallocate your resources? If the dream is unattainable, you might want to reallocate your time and energy to other important areas of your life. One of the things that holds people back from letting go of dreams is the sunk cost fallacy. The sunk cost fallacy is where you stick with a dream because of how much time & energy you have already put into it, despite evidence that it would be better to let it go. But this time was not wasted - it helped you become the person you are now. ‘Dream adjustment capacity’ should also be considered. This is the ability to incorporate new info & adjust your dream accordingly. A person’s capacity to let go of unattainable dreams & re-engage in new ones is associated with greater psychological wellbeing. Success isn’t holding on to a dream at all costs, it’s evaluating what the true cost of that dream is. You need to be willing to cut your losses if necessary.

Yay for you! I can feel your excitement! Living in South Korea with likely an equal level of safety as Japan, I totally understand your readiness to feel more comfortable vlogging out and about in Japan. For video suggestions, I'd love to see you do collaboration videos; perhaps having a 1-to-1 talk with another foreigner or with a Japanese friend about life in Japan. Vids about Japanese foods or cute cafes would be nice to see too!

when you return back to the US where did you stay and how did you manage the difference in cost of living vs being a nomad/expat in more affordable countries? currently in LA but I plan to travel for 3-6 months with a few trips back to the US

This is a great question, and honestly, the cost of living in LA is so exorbitant that when I'm here, all I can think about is how much I'm spending-especially when I compare it to what I can get in other places. So I totally get it! I haven't lived in LA since August 2019, and whenever I’ve been back, it was only for a few days or weeks at a time. I stay with friends or my family while I'm in town, which is something I'm deeply grateful for. My community helps make this possible! And I also do the same for them with wherever I'm living. So it's a two-way street! This is the longest I’ve spent in LA (one month) since I moved away, and my friend has been gracious enough to let me stay at her place while I'm here. I have my old car here (which is paid off) and only need to cover my regular bills and food costs, but even that feels like a lot out here. I have a friend who uses TrustedHousesitters to find places to stay for free around the world when she wants to cut costs while traveling. If you like animals, maybe this could be a helpful option when you want to come back to the states!

That took me so deeply. I was raised in a poor family, who needed to sacrifice a lot to survive. Now I've started to learn how to just be, not try to save everyone, and be the one who creates a new life for everybody. Asking for help is a huge thing for me. Believing that I'm not disturbing others with my problems and questions is hard when you are raised to save and not to be a human.

Really happy for you! I’m currently finishing university in Australia before moving over there at the end of my degree. I’m very interested in all of the “boring shit” (visas, cost of living ect) but I think what I love most about your channel is your honesty and the way you share your unique point of view. After a while everyone on KZbin just starts to sound the same so a unique voice and perspective like yours is why I subbed and why I’ll stick around for future videos! Very much looking forward to future videos about house hunting, interior decorating, job security, mental health ect!
