This is a great topic........I think it when it comes to computers like the Commodore 64, it's essential to keep it in it's pretty much original state. That said, inventions such as SD2IEC have made the machine much more accessible, especially given the fact that finding reliable, working disk drives with disks that also work is increasingly difficult. I also have old Thinkpads like the X220 and T420 - and I think replacing the old hard drives with modern SSD's has kept them very much alive without changing them too much. It's a balancing act.

Nostalgia is powerful stuff........it's comforting and takes us to a wonderful, happy place. I got my Commodore 64 in 1983 when I was 13. These machines are now 40 years old - they are fragile. So of course, I now have 5 Commodore 64s and multiple drives and CRTs as back-ups and I'm worried about the day they will break down. But most people will not understand, and it can lad to some difficult conversations, especially with partners who don't understand. I could never afford a 1701 monitor as a kid, and when I saw one a few years ago, I just had to have it.

Games on the C64 were designed on CRTs, for CRTs, and they definitely look better on a CRT. If you hook up a 1701 monitor to a C64 via a chroma - luma cable - you will get an incredible picture. If you plug it up to a modern TV, it just looks awful.

Back in the 80's, we actually rarely played C=64 games. We could only afford a few of them, and you can imagine they got boring and played to the end fast and lost their shine. It was only the advent of pirating ROMs, the internet, and that you can have thousands of games on a USB stick fast loader cartridge, that people now falsely think in retrospect the C=64 was primarily a game machine. Back then, most of our time was actually spent writing our own games and programs in BASIC.

Great video. Thinking about picking one of these up while they’re still pretty cheap, old digi cams have hit the nostalgia sweet spot in the last year and I’d like to have one of these early sensors, the shittier the better honestly.

If they’re really going to have us spend $35-$40 a month for old games you can nowadays get for a bargain price, why not throw in bonuses like some action figures or posters? How about giving away a free retro console for those that been wanting a collection of games for that console?? Anything that can convince us to subscribe monthly with that much money when you’re giving away not so much every month. I do like the idea and I really wanted to give it a shot, but I’m sorry, I can’t help but to feel that this is a blatant ripoff and an overall disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, free games that you get to keep every month as long as you’re paying sounds awesome to any gamer, but this is one of those cases of “too good to be trusted.”

I had no computers or video games in the 70s growing up. I saw the first Pong once. No way my old man was going to drop money on that. And I never missed out. I did not sit at my first terminal until graduate school in 1983. I was a writer. Boy, to be able to cut, paste, edit as I write, move, save writing, print and email was amazing! That made me catch the bug! I started getting into computers, online (BBS, CompuServe, GEnie, JUMP, Dow Jones, AOL, etc.). Then it migrated into vintage computing and thrift shopping, etc. I ended up with a basement full of big systems. It hit me this wasn't sustainable and I wasn't using or displaying them, so I sold many of them off. Then I switched to "slabtops" which took less space. (I need to thin the herd here soon too.) This hobby has taught me about programming, electronics, circuit boards, history, soldering/repairs, etc. I am convinced many also enjoy the fellowship. BTW, yes, Mrs. puts up with my hobby. She has one rule I am going to follow. You mentioned it. One comes in; one goes out. Good post. I remain a little addicted to the hunting and acquisition buzz.

The used, grey Nintendo switch lite I recently purchased off GameStop is ok. It’s definitely not in as good condition as the one you’re holding. The back has scratches and the ZR button seemed to need a bit more pressure. The joysticks are black.. I wonder if Nintendo replaced them or the previous owners. And yea, the boxing is not the best.

I used the Sidplayer on my mini as an experiment. But I mostly use the VICE Emulator. I've been converting Gifs on my C64 to see how they turn out. It's hit or miss but fun to do.

I had a few bad shots that had to be edited out. It's not quite instant, but it's pretty fast. An Atari logo pops up for a moment and the game starts right after.

That's a pretty cool device. Atari is way before my time and I have no attachment to it. I think, in this case, emulation is the right way to go over FPGA. The hardware is probably not that difficult to emulate and getting a HDMI signal and other benefits is sweet. I think the market would be too nichè to have an FPGA solution anyhow.

Agreed. You make a lot of good points. I'm just a few years too young to have grown up with Atari myself. Cheers!

Not supplying a power supply seems outrageous to me. I'm ok with it with phones because they get upgraded and relaxed; there's no reason to change this console!

Agreed. It doesn’t bother me, but it should have come with a power supply. Especially for $130.
