Two years ago I've started to practice double bass. Infinite pedal settings changes, drum throne height adjustments, posture, position, distance, leg angle, beater angle, spring tension, beater weight and height and etc etc etc... Finally, believe me or not, for me and my playing I've found pretty decent settings for my pedals. Default beaters (100gr weight) was changed to sonor stock double side beaters (75gr), spring tension to something between low and medium (on Girbaltar Intruder these beaters still swing kinda fast even on low spring tension), stock footboard angle and stock beater angle. And NOW I can play much longer, don't sweat that hard if even, with much more control and less tension. Few years ago before trying double bass after 10 years of playing drums I've learned to not bury the beater to drumhead, because that habit began to limit me in some fast phrases. Still fighting with my left leg to feel control with this technique, I think I will have success in maybe 1 year. With my body weight (65kg) and my current state of technique development heavy beaters was too hard to control. I was forced to set beaters much lower, increase spring tension to have some swing and set beater angle to maybe 40-38 degrees. It was playable but anyway feels clunky. 75gr beaters now just feel RIGHT, FAST and I feel the pedals like the parts of my legs. 10% of maximum volume was sacrificed.

Aren't you using your shin here? I thought that ankle technique was mostly driven by calves

Hey James, great video. When you perform the ankle technique on the pedal, do you keep your leg slightly elevated by having a static contraction of your hip flexor? So the upper leg is still fully relaxed, just "kept in the air" basically

Hey James ! Thx for your Videos!! Gave me a big Help to develop swivel. But I have serious Problems with combining both legs. Im able to Play Them synced, but playing a real doublebass is pretty hard. Could u make a Video about practicing/developing both feet ? Thank you !

possibly get a feel for ALL BPM's to play them all properly. I find 160 BPM to be the most complicated to control 😂 Everything slower & faster then that seem to work out easier. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤔

100% same concept apply for fast kicks. Being relaxed...proper breathing and technique will get you there whatever the bpm you wanna play.
