The moment with your Mum and the flower made me smile. Well done to your Mum for raising an artist that can see the beauty in the world.

Thanks for sharing the National Portrait Gallery and it was nice to see that they have wide ranging examples of methods of portrait painting. This is what I love about art is the diversity. I can do extreme realist images or do impressionist work. They both have their joys. I think for me I get the most out of more impressionist work at this stage of my life at age 64. A hyper realistic image although is impressive to the public at large is not often what many artists are into if you have been there and done that. As I have grown older the need to have people wonder how such realism was achieved? is no longer of interest to me. I'm not creating to impress others although having a strong foundation as a realist painter gives you a good foundation to free up your hand and method of working. I'm a collector as well as an artist and I don't hang my work in my home. It gets sold to others. I like sharing. I like to see work that is very different and eclectic in my home space. I had a painting professor who said something that has stuck with me for over forty years and that was that you never want to be an artist that follows the idea of "The one and only sad and lonely art" in which you think your way is the only way to create beauty in art.

Portraits are just so wonderful, they capture something different of the essence of a person that a photo can’t, may it’s because it’s a slow process where the sitter reveals themselves slowly rather than a split second snapshot in time.

Izzy your small work is beautiful, with my non-artist eyes I can say I would have two further touches: the light-shadow edge under the bed should not be that hard, my eye could not ingore that sharp edge at all! Also, I would add the faintest touch of yellowish glow to the reflection on the floor too, although I know in your reference photo that might not show... keep up the good work!!

Lovely video , I so hear you about the input of making a portrait painting and the need to do a more 'relaxed' painting , it's keeping the balance that is important . Thanks for taking us on the trip to the museum .
