Scooby-Doo is my favorite mystery IP. It's also the reason why I became a fan of Scream, both franchises are very similar. My favorite character is Fred Jones and my least favorite is Velma Dinkley. I own 10 animated movies, 1 animated TV show and the first two live action films. I have been a since I was a kid.

Hey don’t diss Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs. I watched that show as a kid and it was genuinely amazing, the art was so soft and nice, the music has stuck with me to this day.

This is one of my favorite films. I think it’s a great modern interpretation of gothic horror, and watching this while taking a gothic lit class was an unparalleled joy. Thank you for covering this forgotten gem and for including all the history it’s built upon! There was so much more context than I realized.

And in that painful honesty, with eyes and psyche cleaned with sobs, we move into winter hopefully with others that can walk with you. As we all share a vulnerable authenticity, like the trees and bushes shedding their leaves , we lead with our core, and mingle with the fresh brisk clean winter air. We try, with our wounds and scars, to mingle with our new selves.

I spread Brick propaganda every opportunity I get. It's not really close to my favorite movie (although, Knives Out is up there) but it's definitely one of the best movies I've seen that most people have never heard of.

I love this movie. Being a fan of Philip Marlowe stories Brendan gives me that vibe that Marlowe does. He's a tough guy, but he also gets his butt kicked most of the time, but ultimately does get to the bottom of what is going on.

It’s a great show, for kids. I do find it a little odd that people without children would want to watch it, but hey, it’s full of wholesome family stories told beautifully. In our current media landscape that hates the family and loving adult and family relationships it’s a breath of fresh air. Perhaps it’s because there’s so little other wholesome grounded family shows out there that Bluey is all people have these days.

Interesting how I always read that line in M. Butterfly completely differently. In that scene Song Liling is talking to a female soldier of the Communist Party about why female roles in traditional Chinese theater are played by men, and I always interpreted it as “what a woman is” to be a fantasy created by men, and women would play a female role too realistic and destroy that sexist fantasy. To me that line was always a jab at sexism and gender roles.

I really enjoy the novel Crash is based on, it’s simple to understand and kind of disgusting but super philosophically interesting, one of my favorites of all time. It’s written in first person in the novel, I say this because I did not like the adaptation Cronenberg did at all. Cronenberg shot with this separation of the subject, showed things as they were without judgement, which works fine in other stories but I think missed the main point of the book. I think the movie should’ve been shot very much IN with the sex, directly reveling in the events like the book did, unbound by morality or law, the evolution of human sexuality as it has become irreversibly tangled with the evolution of technology. The movie was a boob shot here and there and I found it kind of dull. Unsure if I even think it should’ve been NC-17. The book was just really intense and dissected a lot of cool ideas that I think the adaptation missed. The ideas of the novel were explored much better in Crimes of the Future (2022), and that film I absolutely love, my favorite Cronenberg by far.

Hard agree that it is one of the greatest films of all time. I own the Blu-ray of the Director’s cut and the Japanese Laserdisc cut that is 4hrs. There’s so much in the film, it’s incredible. I guess we must have watched it around the same time of lockdown happening, it felt very apt and of the present time despite it being different circumstances Great analysis

Trans Fem here. Crimes of the Future immediately shot into my favorite films of all time, it is INCREDIBLE. His son, Brandon Cronenberg, also did a very trans film, Possessor (2020) And finally Titane (2021) by Julia Ducournau I think also falls into the trans movies in the horror genre, great films that I recommend to people non-stop The latter two are very trans masc, I recommend them a lot to friends that might be questioning

it's so weird analysing cronenberg and using words like "perverted", especially implying that his characters' become realized' when getting out of said perversion, a very christian view that at least to me defies so much of what he explores when talking about the body, violence, sex and ourselves as a group and how we interact with one another.

I think you can’t grasp butterfly, because you don’t/won’t see from the point of view from a man during colonialism. Of course only a man knows what a woman truly should be; he knows what he wants, what his mother was like, etc. if you only look at films trough a political lens, and being grown in a bubble and most likely having been groomed (I truly am not trying to be mean here), you’re missing how men feel about such scenarios as in the film.

People don’t watch and cannot interact with art in a vacuum Their past experiences, present ideologies and future goals will affect any art consumed by them and ultimately impact their interpretation of the work Ironically, it seems to me your own beliefs would like to dictate how others interpret and interact with this work, doubtful you would’ve made such a comment had it affirmed your own beliefs This is just one interpretation of many differing interpretations, one person sharing their view based on their own life and experiences People don’t typically make things just because, they have a reason to do so. Cronenberg especially has always leaned into political and social dissections through his films, it is willfully ignorant to say otherwise, 50 years of this stuff with a statement to make or an idea to explore

Great analysis! I think the video title could be just "Cronenberg's Trans Existentialism", since you cover the whole filmography from that angle. It will be more honest, direct and simple, and also maybe more friendly to the algorithm. It will not only focus on one movie, will be more broad and pick interest on more people imo. Imagine a thumbnail with David's face and many of his characters, it may reach more people. Great work.

I got the incest twist spoiled for me before even watching the movie. I saw it was put on Netflix one day so I turned on to watch it cuz it was around the Halloween season so I thought why not (plus I've been a huge fan of Tom Hiddleston ever since his performance as Loki in the first Thor movie) And I will admit even with the spoiler in my mind it was kinda obvious Thomas and Lucille were the bad guys so I told myself not to be swayed by Thomas's charm. I sadly fell for it Thomas to me was so charming I can't even fault Edith for falling for him cuz I'd definitely would've done the same but as the movie went on I was really enjoying their relationship blossom and seeing how haunted Thomas was due to how his sister has treated him and what she's caused him to sacrifice. Then I was watching this movie now fully aware of whats gonna happen and noticing details I never noticed my first time around. When you addressed the complaints people had about the motivation of Thomas and you said to Lucille it never mattered I remembered how whenever Thomas and Edith were alone and engaged in intimacy how Lucille would conventionally come in and how scared Thomas looked whenever she was near him and especially him being with and near Edith. It kinda breaks my heart🥺💔

thank you for this video! as an ex-christian with some... baggage about it, i loved midnight mass so much that i broke down sobbing for a full half hour the first two times i watched it (and i rarely cry, and seldom cry for long, so this is quite the feat!). safe to say it has a mainline to my emotions lol. i found in erin's death monologue the most convincing argument ive ever heard for coming back to faith, and in the rest of the show a reminder of why i left. the more i look back on what i was raised in the more i feel like, by this point, christianity and horror are inextricable. they are not the only aspects of each other, obviously, but i find it hard to look at Abraham and Isaac nowadays and see not God-will-provide but instead Isaac on the altar. That and the millenia since and everything Christianity the institution has justified. midnight mass did such a good job of placing all of it front and center.

Very nicely thought out and executed analysis. I'm impressed. You touch on themes others have in this space, but this added a very intriguing layer. The continuity of film making through different eras and the natural ebb and flows of those era, one to the next. I'll be watching this again because I'm sure I'm going to catch something I missed watching this the first time. I was 11 when I got to go see Jaws in the theater. My aunt abd uncle had to convince my grand mother to let me go with them. I'll never forget some of the sensations and little nuances of that night. Count me as a new subscriber

I watched brick for the first time when it came out because we had nothing else to watch and thought it looked interesting. Now my age as doubled and for the whole time it's stuck with me and influenced me - I still revisit the soundtrack and the imagery and watch it again from time to time. I tend to watch movies without knowing an awful lot about who's behind them and as it turns out Knives Out is one of my favourites from recent years - and Glass Onion in particular also somehow sticks with me. So it makes sense to find out it's Rian who's responsible for both! Great write-up Micah - have stumbled across this video by chance and love the sentiment. As a creator myself I couldn't agree more. Followed!

I've recently started likening Bethesda games to digital theme parks rather than RPGs. Places with a lot of small concentrated moments of fun with mascots to guide you around, all set to a thematic backdrop, but lacking in the depth and complexity that RPGs need to feel cohesive or lived in.
