Do you know if the fire inspector exam is more difficult to pass than some of the other ones like plumbing electrical mechanical? The job I am pursuing requires an IRC and one other certification Fire, electrical, plumbing mechanical, I'm leaning towards Fire. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks for a great video.

The IFC and IBC have a lot of overlap. If you are pretty knowledgeable is the International Building Code then that might be the way to go. On shear size of material its definitly thicker than the plumbing code. In my area the plumbing cert helps more as there are no additional requirements to become an inspector in that trade. To become an electrical inspector I need to have a journeyman's license and for fire I need to have had some fire background. The mechanical cert isn't to bad either. A lot on gas piping/sizing/etc. Dont know if that answered your question but hopefully it helped a little. Good Luck!!

Morning! I know that happens. And probably more than we think. Just being human and with the vast amount of code its hard to be perfect. The liability ultimately lies with the owner/contractor to build their project to current code but anything brought to our attention after the fact would mostly likely get reviewed.

Hello, The building code standard for the US is the International Building Code or ICC. The standard I-Codes cover the United States while each state and local city or county will then amend them for specific conditions. All of my videos are pulled from the IRC or International Residential Code. Hope that helps!

Good series of videos. My glass supplier sales guy couldn't give me nearly the same level of explanation as to WHY tempered glass is required in specific locations. I had thought it was more to do with slamming doors breaking adjacent glass, but no. It's one thing to read the code but understanding the rationale for the code is just as important. I hope it's worth your while to keep making these because they are helpful.

I live in zone 5 and I really enjoyed tearing out ALL the panels and sheet rock and repairing the sills on the first floor of my house due to plastic vapor barrier. Hot humid air from outside condensed on the back side of the plastic in the summer. The water collected and ruined my sills not to mention the mold. Everything got repaired at a huge cost and then I sold the house in good conscience. Now the house I bought, is beginning to have the same problem. Some of my sheet rock is water stained in several places. So, I'm rethinking this plastic vapor barrier deal. Might be perfect for some, but I am not seeing it.

Technically, you could be asked to open up the walls and verify insulation/framing/etc. and if its not up to current code then updates could be required. If an accident were to happen, insurance could deny the claim if it was found that work was completed without permit. I would suggest taking lots of pictures if you go down that road

Do you think Fire plans examiner is a good job? Also is it easy to learn?
@buildingcodetips

The IFC (International Fire Code) has a lot duplicated information from the IBC. If you have worked in the code book at all it shouldn't be to much trouble. I don't have any fire fighter experience and I was able to pass the exam for certification with normal studying. As far as it being a good job, my opinion would be that it is right in line with a plans examiner except tailored towards fire related items such as exiting, how fire engines can get in and out, alarms, flammable products, storage, etc.

Most framers that I see block out that section for the strap to run through and for the garage door buck to run over.

I wish all inspectors were as helpful! I’m in a tricky situation, on the ground floor of a 2 storey 1920 addition attached to an 2 storey 1880 barn, where the exterior kitchen wall attached to a barn was already cut for a tight stove placement. I am trying to enlarge that opening, and put a back door into the house portion. Whew! Each corner has a true 4x6 post. There are studs inside the barn wall, and more studs inside the kitchen portion. The enclosure sides and ceiling don’t attach to the barn. I want to cut 2 studs on the barn wall for a total 7’ span. I have a 30” door to install on the perpendicular wall to the back yard, but that damn post! It’s on the left, and if I go right, I lose almost all my cabinets and counter. But there is currently no way to access the backyard! I’m so confused. Anyone with advice?TIA
@buildingcodetips
@buildingcodetips 2 ай бұрын
Hi Lori, Am I right in understanding that there are 2 questions here? First is removing some studs in the existing barn wall to create a 7ft opening and the other is needing to cut in an exterior door on one of the exterior walls on the addition to create access to the back yard? Typically with any opening a beam can be installed on the barn wall where the proposed removal of studs is. I would recommend going to a local lumber yard with some pictures of what you want to do and asking them to size a beam for you. This could get trickier if the floor system and roof system bear on this wall, possibly creating excessive point loads, requiring some pad footings under the beam. For the door, what is the 4x6 post holding up? Is this a pole barn type structure, is it holding the 2nd floor over continuous footings? Could the header that will need to be installed over the door carry into the post by notching it and then the section below the header be reduced in size. This might depend on if you would be notching into the 6" side and not the 4" side I would assume. I would suggest doing the same thing as above and taking some pictures of what you have and speaking with someone at the lumber yard about post size. maybe a 6x6 would work under the header and that will gain the extra inches you need. Thanks - Ben

After 6 years supervising maintenance for apartment complexes, I’m interesting in transitioning into an inspector role for homes our buildings in the state of Washington, I just don’t know where to start. Would you have any advice?
@buildingcodetips
@buildingcodetips 2 ай бұрын
Are you leaning more towards being a home inspector or a building inspector? I believe that the home inspector path requires a certification through a training of some sort. Depending on how demanding your current job is the home inspector path may be something that can be started on the side and see how it goes. As for being building inspector, start watching your local city and county websites for inspector opening. Many times there are no certification requirements at the time of hire with the understanding that you will get your certifications within a year. It never hurts to start working on certifications now though if this is the path preferred. Spend some time on the iccsafe.org web page. This is where code books can be purchased as well as study material and exam scheduling. Washington is working under the 2021 code cycle so the International Residential Code and International Building Code would be good places to start under that year. Hope that helps a little - let me know if you have any more questions!!

Hey man quick question. I'm currently working on a full gut remodel/flip in Texas. If I need an answer to say something related to plumbing. Should I reference the International Residential Code or will I need to reference the International Plumbing Code? Will the answer/code I'm looking for be in both code books? What's frustrating is if there's a plumbing code, why include plumbing codes in the IRC? Why not remove the redundancy/confusion if you have a specific code for that area. Just my two cents but what's the general rule there?

Good information on safety glazing requirements. A bit of tempered glass trivia.....The picture of broken tempered glass on the far left shown at 5 minutes into the video is an example of tempered glass that "spontaneously" broke due to nickel sulfide inclusion. The two large hexagons that were circled for a moment in the video are formed specifically breakage due to nickel sulfide inclusion occurs. This type of tempered breakage is more common in shower doors, oven doors, refrigerator shelves, or even tempered glass balcony railings because much of this glass is imported from places where nickel contamination can be a problem. While North American glass manufacturers don't use nickel in either the batch process or in the molten glass furnace so that nickel sulfide specific breakage doesn't occur in North American made glass, some window companies do import raw glass from either Europe or China and then tempering and using the imported glass in residential or architectural windows can introduce an increased risk of "spontaneous" breakage for no apparent reason to those windows. A couple comments on the example labels also at 5 mins in.....The etched label for Safeguard Solid Tempered is an automotive and not residential logo and if etched on a residential window would not meet the labeling requirements of ANSI Z97.1 "For Safety Glazing Materials Used In Buildings" or either IBC or IRC. AS2 in that logo means that the glass meets the requirements for side or back windows of an automobile but not the front windshield. DoT 18 is the registered Department of Transportation manufacturer designation. Nothing in that logo pertains to residential or architectural safety glazing label requirements, however the information etched into the window to the left of the automotive logo does contain required info. Tempered glass cannot be "barely broke". If tempered glass breaks then it either looks a lot like the first picture (with or without the two hexagons), when it hasn't fallen out of the frame yet, or else it has collapsed into a pile of tiny cubes all over the floor. Tempered glass is an all or nothing proposition when it comes breakage, there is no "partial" option.

Hey Amy, The US has adopted the I-Codes for its base model, governed by the ICC (International Code Council). In this case I am working out of the International Mechanical Code or IMC. From these codes states, counties and cities will amend ICC codes to fit their geographic area and desired building standards. You may have some specific standards above the minimum requirements but hopefully this video will at least get you moving down the right path!
