How hard is it to make a crossover? I don't know how long B&W took to make the crossover, but the 600 series bookshelf speaker took 3 years to develop. And most of that time would have been the crossover (I reckon). I build speakers as a hobby and the crossover is like the hardest. But with me it's worse cos I have several unique acoustic features in my unusual speakers. And there are a lot of adjustable acoustic variables. Basically they are an open FR or coaxial driver on top of the box with a woofer in the box. Even a 1mm change in the top driver height above the box can make a lot of difference in sound. The crossover is the course adjustment and the acoustic tweakes are the fine adjustment (both equally as HARD). 🎉

B&W dm603 S2 and dm602 S2 and CM1 are one of my best low cost hifi speakers especially in secondhand 😉👍👍👍 but S3 is the most terrible speakers made by BW🤕🤕🤕 you can upgrade this speakers by replacing tweeter's caps by jantzen superior Z cap. y

The bass and the mids sound great, the tweeter seems to be on the sharp side with the zingeling. Only a longer listening session can reveal if this leads to fatigue. Can you reveal what midrange driver you use?
@homemade_audio
@homemade_audio 7 күн бұрын
the midrange is based on jbl le85 Alnico compression driver with Radian 1225-8 inside. the super tweeter level can be controlled by L-pad like midrange too. all film caps were replaced by clarity caps for midrange and jantzen audio caps for super tweeters 😁😁😁.

@homemade_audio the sound was fantastic they were the OG full range driver before all these Bluetooth speakers etc and they actually had beautiful sound for micro and hit way above their weight class in sound even at only about 20 to 40 Watts a channel, so cool to see even just the speaker after all these years I'd still buys a unit myself if I saw one for nostalgic reasons. Excellent video explaining crossovers as well thanks a lot! 😊

@homemade_audio

yes that's true 👍, jbl le5 midrange can play HF too. for that reason jbl didn't use low pass for this midrange on crossover, just high pass.
@homemade_audio
@homemade_audio 11 күн бұрын
jbl 4311 has poor crossover: 1st order high pass for midrange & tweeter, and the boomer directly connected to terminal as a full range driver. with little components you have responce not linear but with a very clear sound!!!! the version of 4311 with a very sophisticated crossover is the jbl 4411.

I have onkyo tweeters and they have an issue that the wires of the centre coil breaks frequently. I have got them repaired several times but the issue again comes. What is the solution?
@homemade_audio
@homemade_audio 9 күн бұрын
in general it's difficult to repair well a tweeter because the diaphragm is very light and small, instead of that some manufacturers sell a new diaphragm kit to fix problem. for onkyo i know that you can't find a diaphragm kit, but you can find one on other brand that can fit on magnet of your tweeter. disassembly your tweeter, remove diaphragm and make some mesures of your tweeter's voice coil diameter and depth and impedance, then search a smilar one with exact dimensions on web and buy two for both tweeters to get same results on both tweeters. other options is to find some one to repair your tweeter well without replacing voice coil to keep original sound!!! this the best solution if it's possible 👍.

You could have done some "before and after" measurements, such as the magnetic field strength in the voice coil gap, as well as measuring the frequency response at 2.83 volts and at 1 meter distance. You could also have wound a new voice coil on a Kapton base, for even better performance. Also, when centering the system, it is more correct to place the separator in advance, and slide the voice coil with the cone and spider down on it, and not the other way around. And don't be offended, I'm writing this for the purpose of constructive criticism. Greetings from Bulgaria :)
