I just read Apple software support lasts only five years. This is terrible. Cheap brands typically offer seven years and Windows is ten years and most often you can upgrade to next OS and keep going.

Brilliantly simple explainer. Bravo. Just bought a new Mac for the first time in ~7 years. 14" MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM, 512GB space. M4 chip. Ready to edit 4K video on it. External HDs all the way.

If you are buying a "computer", get more ram, as much as you can afford. If you are buying a coffee shop web browser and that's what you understand from a laptop, go with whatever amount of ram. Reasoning: While you may not always use more ram, it's not upgradeable in mac. If you have more ram, it will still serve you in intense work days when your deadline is tomorrow and you have to do six days of work. And the one with lower amount of ram will stay that way with no way to upgrade, it will never save you in intense days.

For anybody wanting to know the actual truth, 8 and 16 gigs of ram is not enough these days. If you want a functional computer, then 16 gigs is the bare minimum, but I would strongly suggest 32.

Should you buy 8gb or 16gb Mac? Answer: Windows with 32gb and still cheaper than Mac. 😂 Not just cheaper but faster. Switched from mac pro to dell xps oled all high specs.(6gb dedicated nvidia graphics) Play games and code. Couldn't be happier.

Now I would recommand if you are developer or editor then buy atleast 16gb ram if possible 24. 24Gb is a safer option if you are buying for next 5-6 years as of 2024 is about to end. 8gb is very less ram in current day.

Regarding the small SSD cards. If you go this route pay for a good quality brand. I had a cheap as chips one and after a month of using it, it just stopped working.

I agree with everything except the mouse and keyboard. You definitely want to invest in a split keyboard because it allows you to be in a less crunched position with how far the each half of the keyboard can be placed from each other. Also having the ability to angle them puts your arms and wrists in a more natural position which reduces strain. And secondly, a trackball mouse like the Kensington Slim Blade Pro; absolute gamechanger in eliminating wrist pain and RSI.

My Windows laptop has had 32GB for *well* over 5 years now to prevent exactly this problem. And it was _not_ expensive to upgrade. In fact, it was freely _upgradable_ in the first place. And while I agree that visualizing RAM vs. HDD/SSDs is difficult, using two boards is very misleading. Both retain their information indefinitely as long as we do not _actively_ wipe them, so the volatility of RAM does not come across to a "layman" here.
