Just bought a 6 year old x280 for £120. Not quite as upgradeable and small but still a well built and extremely portable machine. ThinkPad are stunning and just look exactly how a laptop should.

I remember buying my own phone line and ISP during the early 2000's just to play Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast with the job I had. Eventually I had to cancel the service once I lost my job, but it was awesome having my own dedicated internet and not having to fight anyone just to do anything online.

When I first started my job I picked out an old MacBook Pro 2012 and I loved that thing until it finally gave out on me last year and I swapped for an m2, and I still miss it.

@13:05 man that's nothing, my ThinkPad uses 9GB just watching a KZbin video in windows 11 (6GB idle) but in Linux Mint I'm using under 2.5GB RAM watching a video and 1.1GB at idle. I have a Ryzen 7 Pro 4650U and 16GB RAM. I'm too much of a scaredycat to use Arch, I'm just used to the debian/Ubuntu package manager and terminal commands and it's what I've always used

We sure have come a long way since then. I just bought a laptop with Windows 98 to run pretty much just one program. I will be introducing it to cable style internet. Is there anything I should be concerned about? I'm mostly worried about it picking up a nasty virus. Is there any thing you might recommend for updated protection for a system this old?

Ive been using a t440p for a while now. Bought it used, put 16g of ram in it, dual ssd, i7 4702mq, 1080p display and I run linux mint. Its a really good daily laptop thats so solid im not worried about bending it in half in my bag. Battery is passed its best, I get just under 2 hours but a 9 cell will be in my basket soon enough.

Maybe an alternative is to replace the 13 in MacBook Pro logic board with a logic board with 16 gb of ram and a dedicated gpa. The track pad on the MacBook Pros are very good and the sound is good as well. Many Thinkpads are excellent as well.

So a few things I would like to add; swap out the CD drive for more storage and upgrade the internal storage and you can have something like 4TB+ in that machine. It is a fucking beast. I may re-purchase one in the future and see just how far I can push it.

Heads up, you will probably want to switch from neofetch to fastfetch, for two reasons: 1. Fastfetch is, as the name implies, much faster on account of being a compiled program rather than a bash script 2. Neofetch's creator has discontinued all his software, archived the matching repositories, and, by his own words, "has taken up farming". Fastfetch is still under active development.

AliExpress also sells adaptors from USB-C PD to the rectangular ThinkPad power connector, so you can charge these with modern USB-C chargers. written from my T440s which has been my daily driver for years and will likely still last for another few years.
