Building a Better Windows 98 Gaming PC

In this video I rebuilt the Windows 98 computer that I built earlier on this channel with a better look and hardware.

@@AgonyrateSure did. But my personal favs were Blood 3D, Samurai Warrior and System Shock. Q3 came ‘bit later, for the real arena shooter, to me, the choice is easy: Unreal Tornament :)

ISA video cards are somewhat infamous for being slower than PCI cards, let alone AGP ones. It's no wonder why the the Trident card was slow to draw the text. Also, quick suggestion for the build; you should try installing a Sound Blaster 16. Not only will it provide great DOS compatibility (especially if it has a real OPL3 on board; some Vibra cards do and some don't) but I'm pretty sure you could use it alongside the Live card too; so long as you disable the SB16 emulation on it.

Hey mate, solid video! Hope you keep up with the retro tech videos! One thing I will note though, from the looks of it, it looks like you're filming off your phone? If so, don't know what phone you're using but if you're on iOS, I would highly recommend getting Varlens as it'll give you DSLR controls for your camera. That way, you can adjust the shutter speed of your camera to match the refresh rate of the monitor (to get rid of the flashing/flickering bars on the CRT) Anyways, keep up the retro tech content (hopefully you make more videos like this in the future) and have yourself a great day mate! While I don't miss the performance of the pc's back then I do miss the capabilities of some software. Specifically, the capabilities of the Creative SoundBlaster cards and software. Use to be able to do all kinds of illegal ripping, recording, editing enhancing and burning of music that is no longer possible these days. Hell, it's even rare to find a modern tower with a disc drive anymore. Nice video but you should work on your sound quality.

I think the PIII was a 133 MHz FSB CPU, this board only supports max. 100 MHz FSB. You need then to crank up the multiplier to get to 850 MHz, like 8.5 x 100MHz = 850 MHz

Nice build I like to see what more games you put on it. I think those usb cards never worked for me neither on 98 or modern systems no idea why I think something overflow the 5v rail

You should clean out the AGP socket. Don't just leave gunk in there. Also, you should think about having those other motherboards sent out for recapping or learn to do it yourself.

As far as i have seen, newer PCI cards don't generally work correctly with old pentium III or II boards.

use a old toothbrush to clean the connector, it works very well for me when cleaning ram slots

I dont really recommend a MX4000 with a Pentium 2, maybe use a RIVA TNT2 or a ATi RAGE card, also you should try a 3DFX card!

cool computer you got, hopefully i can get some of my old hardware sorted out at my place to get a old PC build complete one day, i got about 10 old PC's laying around it would be nice to configure something correctly. that 5.25 floppy would be cool to have i am pretty sure i got a ton of old disc laying around my place somewhere. i wish i still had the first computer i ever used in my life time, there were games on there that are only lost to time now and cannot find copies of them on the internet. if anyone could tell me the name of this one game that i am talking about, car driving game: you where a smiley face at the bottom center of the screen you drive from bottom of the screen up, the further you get thru the game the more the colors of the grass change, the path was always a random track and you keep driving tell your gas runs out or you crash. that is all i remember from the game

A virge or matrox with sli v2s would round out that box perfectly. A tnt2 ultra is also an option. The p2 450 is perfect.

@MachtnixPasstso-pw1nr It was the fastest p2 & very fast for that era. A p3 would be faster, sure but compatibility issues with his mobo was a problem & at the time games really didn't make use of sse2/3 instruction sets. Quake 2 is an exception.

While this motherboard can probably recognize 1GB of RAM, Windows 98's limit is 512MB without modification. Which is great anyway, 512MB is practically overkill for Windows 98.

Windows 98 or Windows 98SE? 98 original can be very picky with hardware. 98SE is much better at that. Look for Maximus Decim USB to find an installer for Windows Me's USB Mass Storage support into 98SE. That fixes a ton of issues with USB. Someone else did the same for 98 original or 98FE.

GeForce4 that's a Pentium 4 Windows XP era card, not Pentium II era, but if it works, then use it fine

Ice got a 4 port PCI usb card in my windows 98 PC - i think its just USB 1 though 9mb/s - maybe because ur trying usb 2.0 is the problem

Hah, I've got an almost identical system, case, p2, ram, and that 52x cd drive lmao. Mine has Quantum Bigfoot 5.25 and a Rage 128 pro and some random Soundblaster from a bin though EDIT: Different mobo too, KR632

1GB ram for win98 is a little to much for it. 1GB or highter is more for win2000. I would recommend 512MB ram , that should be plenty enough for win98 and to run everything you like.

Actually, it does. Just after the setup is complete. And with PATCHMEM, you can get it to use 3 gigs of RAM
