Thanks for the video. All of my hongdian pens write beautifully. But my problem with them is the quality control of the pen body, mostly aesthetically. The clip on my Dark Forest is tilted, the spring loaded clip of my Al M2 becomes loose and is falling apart, the cap and body of my A7 are not centered/aligned with capped. Once these QC issues are solved, these pens can become killers.

Funny Trudeau honor. He began ruling with a lot of idealism, but the tide all over the world is more nationalistic. The pen looks promising, but I prefer steel look over fake gold and no decoration on bands, especially on such an otherwise minimalist design.

Interesting comments again. I agree that Pilot has best TQM of all pens. I think it’s kind of a mistake to generalize pen output by country. Over time even companies had different standards. For example even old inexpensive snowflakes sometimes have better nibs than modern collectible editions. Part of the reason may be that MB outsourced production of student pens. You might be interested to know that Japanese retailers and pen manufacturers often run free pen tuning clinics. It isn’t a chance for a fancy custom grind, but adjusts the pen for alignment and the writing angle of the user. I think these also build brand loyalty and make even some imperfections more tolerable since customers get the last step for free. It’s like buying glasses from a local store rather than online. I think that service makes higher price more acceptable in the domestic market there. It is interesting to see how Indian craft manufacturers are now paying more attention to nibs and TQM. It is hard to shift markets with marketing and traditional craft shops. Some entrepreneurs there are innovating too, but need to keep TQM and service and price/value equations.

Good attention to the importance of paper. Most paper in the US is awful for most FPs, as they are designed for laser printers instead. How are Chinese papers? Are any worth purchasing? For cheap American paper I’m very happy with a very inexpensive Jinhao 911. It’s not popular here but costs maybe $5 with shipping

Interesting comments except that you seem rather biased about Japanese and Japan. I understand there is a long and complex history, but 1) please don’t use offensive name for Japanese as we wouldn’t tolerate that for Chinese people or others. 2) Japanese don’t need KZbin videos explaining their market as they established overseas distributors and vendors who deal with distribution, marketing, sales to stores, repairs and customer service , marketing and attending pen shows. They’ve done that for decades, although that raises prices, 3) I think Japanese pens are more worthwhile because of the TQM even on most cheap pens. That builds image, brand loyalty, market reach. On the other hand I think you are right that many people follow trends blindly such as chasing snowflakes and maki-e. I think tamenuri is beautiful craftsmanship but don’t get busy maki-e on pens. It is a fun hobby and offers a good chance to explore cultures and political theory in tense and complex days. PS I also recommend the podcast Tokyo Inklings for insight into Japanese FP culture and economics. PSS I remember your interesting blog now and am happy to see your posts. PSSS I sometimes prefer converter pens as it is easy to replace one-unlike a piston.

I bought 3 Moonman M800s with F nib, in 3 different colors, none of the 3 pens had a decent nib. In all 3 cases the nibs were very scratchy and above all very dry. I bought replacements of the same size and only 1 was decent, the other 2 were even worse than the ones mounted on the pens. In the end I replaced all the nibs with Keigelu F nibs and everything changed. Unfortunately all the Moonmans I bought (3 M800s, 3 N2s, 2 T1s) turned out to be excellent pens well built, but with terrible nibs. I hope I was just unlucky, because otherwise I can't explain the success of these pens that still cost much more than the Jinhao, but without having better nibs (like those for example of X159, Centennial, 9016 or 82). I really don't understand this situation on Majohn's part.
@Shanghai_Knife_Dude7 күн бұрын
@@MicheleDileoGoogle when was that? M800 was pretty old model, like around 2019. Among the Chinese gang, MJ is definitely the top in assembly, novelty and rip off copyright. All nibs are outsourced. Nowadays, steel nibs from China are quite consistent in superb quality. Various makers also adopte different tipping material. MJ tipping is pretty closed to Pelikan with 3/5 feedback (in my taste). Jinhao's tipping is like Pilot with 1/5 feedback.

You are the same person who makes Bobby grinds? I quite like those and your WS 601 kit. Interesting video even if it was a bit hard to follow. I would love to see a general overview and history of pen makers in the PRC. It is confusing for us, especially since there seem to be several companies as Wing Sun, for example. Overseas pricing is complex as many companies have overseas distribution companies which usually raise prices and offer fewer selections. One can buy from the original country but then we can’t get repairs as it would be treated as a grey market purchase. To be honest I often buy used or vintage in any case as I like older pens and keep the hobby on a budget. I would not compare Montblanc prices as they sell based on marketing and prestige more than other brands. I’m happy that PRC makers have affordable versions of classics like the Parker / Wing Sun 601 well made EDC pens at reasonable prices. I’m also interested in creative PenBBS efforts. I agree that it will be good if PRC pen makers will keep working on more nib grind varieties while keeping affordable prices. I think many of us will be wary of more expensive pens from PRC given problems like poor customer service for false advertising of things like gold nibs from sellers and Online sites. Intellectual property theft also makes foreign customers wary like the fakes of Montblanc or Lamy or companies that hide where they are from. Someday I would love to gather some early Chinese pens to better imagine the changes that have taken place in the past few decades there. Sadly I’ve only been to Nanjing and Shanghai briefly and didn’t have time to pen shop.

@AndrewWertheimer traffickers buy from Chinese Ali or Taobao, add enough premium to meet "western perception of pens", 200% at least, then ship to US. As China is still under category of "developing country", US Postal (us tax payers) subsidies small single shipment from China. Honeymoon of US buyer is ending.

@ yes. Trump’s tariffs will take a bite. I think PRC domestic makers are aiming at export market after seeing the money exporters made and with the financial problems of domestic economy. I don’t think foreign market will be so hungry for expensive Chinese pens. We agree that the Luxury market is overinflated and people are willing to spend more for quality-build (which has been improving), sophisticated unique designs (very different), reliable guarantees and domestic service options, and some perceived added value of luxury. I thought PenBBS might be able to do that because they have a history of passionate exploring and experimenting with FP users in mind as the audience. It will be interesting to see if I’m wrong. I think the great internet wall blocks PRC makers from hearing audience reaction and seeing foreign trends. It also blocks foreign possible consumers from feeling each Chinese company as a real entity with a brand, design team, and social Justice / human rights / environmental responsibility vision. Global politics make this even harder. It has been interesting to observe changing attitudes on Chinese pens in India given the hot war on the border in more recent years. Cheers.
