Hi there!
In this video, I teach you a few Cantonese phrases that are somewhat related to hiking in Hong Kong (at least hiking that I would do!) and also show you some beautiful views taken from Hong Kong's different hiking trails by friends of mine who have been doing a lot of hiking these past few years as COVID drags on.
I decided to do this because Hong Kong has closed its public beaches in response to the Omicron wave, and with temperatures dropping slightly, hikers in HK may have another chance to get out and hike before temperatures really start to climb and remain high. That is if the rain stops!!
I'm posting this rather later than I wanted .... you'll see the day I recorded it was Saturday, but I got busy making lots of comfort food (i.e. chicken congee) for my daughter who was rear-ended on Saturday and feeling poorly, so video editing and posting got pushed back a bit!
BUT it meant I discovered ‪@MadeWithLau‬ and OMG I am so happy! Daddy Lau's chicken congee was easy and different than what I usually would do (never would have thought to add oyster sauce!), and it was so tasty! Scored big points with the kids with this one, and can't wait to try more of Daddy Lau's recipes.
I hope you find this video interesting! If you do, please like and subscribe with notifications on, and check out my playlists for other videos.
As always, comment below with any thoughts or observations and I'll do my best to reply.
Thank you for watching and happy learning!
Sue

Thank you for making the Cantonese corner. Most foreigners would be interested in learning Mandarin for the China market. Glad you have so much passion about Cantonese. As a Hong Konger, I would say your Cantonese is close to native speaker. I have no idea of tones, but it sounds right.

You're welcome, and thank you! That's one of the things I heard the most from people: "Why learn Cantonese when Mandarin is so much more useful?" But I never really was interested in learning Mandarin ... plus I have so much more to learn about Cantonese! 🥸🤩

Greetings from Hong Kong. Hello, Miss Sue. I found your KZbin channel from an interview on Apple Daily. Anyway, your Cantonese speaking is so clear and fluent, as well as tones. And I hope that I can hike again since January, because it allows me to feel a sensational moment in a natural environment. 🥾⛰️ Sorry to hear that you lost your job and needed to return to your home country, United States of America, last year, due to the pandemic. I hope you can find your path smoothly and return to Hong Kong in the future. (I always wished to live/work/study in America in the future, after being influenced since childhood.)

Hello!! Thank you for commenting and watching from Hong Kong! I hope you can hike again too before it gets too hot ... I've heard temperatures aren't too hot now, but it's raining, so that's a bummer ... but typical March weather for sure! Thank you for the well wishes. The path is becoming smoother, but a few bumps along the way aren't always a bad thing, I think. Keeps it interesting. 😄 Wishing you all the best too, and do hope you can make it to the US someday! 💗

Thank you Sue! I've just stumbled across your channel and am really loving and appreciate what you're doing to teach Cantonese to those interested. As a native Cantonese speaker myself I use jyutping if I ever have to type Chinese so I can't say I'm familiar at all with what I assume is the Yale romanization system that you're using but I appreciate how systematically you're applying it to explain pronunciation rules!

Hi Sue you are truly amazing. I randomly found your KZbin channel as I was looking for ways to teach my son to speak Cantonese. I barely can hear any foreign accent from your Cantonese and indeed your Cantonese is very local hk. The way how you structure your Cantonese learning materials is really awesome. I never thought that Cantonese can be learnt in such a very formal way as the language itself is quite informal. Thanks for your good work.

I just stumbled into one of your videos this week, super impressed with your pronunciation and fluency in Cantonese. A lot of my Chinese/HK friends moved overseas when they were very young and a lot of them have struggled (or have no interest) to learn Cantonese. I'm sure others have commented on how there's much less interest in Cantonese due to the more practical nature of Mandarin (to reach the Chinese market), but I just want to echo the sentiment that it's great to someone that's passionate about persevering and teaching the language. Thank you and keep up the great work!

Good Morning from Hong Kong, I just bumped into your channel the other day while I was searching travel information to explore the rural Thailand. As I need to leave hk for a while to get some fresh air and freedom after 2 years and 3 months of covid lockdown. I am still facing a 7+7 quarantine policy by the hk authorities on return though! You were talking about why you left Hong Kong for good after having lived here for 33 years almost. I kind of understand your reasons and at the same time identify with your feelings. Being born and bred here for most time of my life- had been educated overseas for more than 16 years- I constantly ask myself the questions of whether staying on or when is the best time of my departure for good. Anyway I don’t want to ramble on here….but I wish you all the best in your new place for another page of your life. By the way, “hold on” in the Cantonese you taught actually means “not yet” literally😄 Best wishes!

2:35 let me take that question haha 等 in cantonese (or Chinese) actually has 2 meanings, one is “wait”, which is more common and often used, another means “category” or “level”, which is more archaic and usually used in written language. So in this instance, 等等actually means “categories and categories”. We also sometimes just used them without repetition, as “a, b, and c等”. Love your videos and keep them coming!
