You are definitely very "leih hoi" in Cantonese! As a Hongkonger, I really appreciate how you put in your heart in promoting Cantonese and HK culture! One small comment on the 5th sound, I heard that when you speak the 5th tone alone (e.g. 8:46), you actually spoke the 2nd tone mid rising instead. However, when put together in a word (e.g. 9:43) you do use the right 5th tone. I remember when I was young I also used to mix up this two tone as well, so I absolutely understand this small mistake and it doesn't take away how you explain really well these words! Another suggestion on the tone practice is you could find a word which has all 6 tones. They are quite rare but I found it quite helpful for me to distinguish the tones (especially 2 vs 5 and 3 v 5). The word I use is "Si" and "Fan". "Si" as in poems/private (詩/私), history (史), try/test (試), time/hour (時), city/market (市) and yes/incidents/demonstrate (是/事/示). "Fan" as in wedding (婚), powder (粉), to train (訓), to burn (焚), anger (憤) and part (份). Finally, I hope you all well in the states, and although I am sorry that you have to leave, I am happy for you as well! Wish you all well and continue to thrive no matter where you are!

Thank you so much! It is sooo true -- I have the hardest time saying the words individually, but when I put them together in a sentence, it seems to come out just right. 😆 And thank you for the tone practice words -- I am going to try harder to get them right. I have a video I did with a friend and it was so much fun but it was SO hard to get the words for "hard" and "eye" right. 😂 You can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqe0fp-QprOsntU The best part of my channel for me is all the comments and support, so thank you again and thank you for all the well wishes! Hi, Miss Sue. This is the first video teaching westerners Cantonese I have ever seen made by a westerner, and you are doing a terrific job of it. Just some extra information for lei Hoi which means to leave, people prefer to say "leih gei shi zao" or "leih gei dim chung zao“. I think it's more colloquial way than lei hoi. Another one is that we normally call someone named Mr. Lee "Lee Saang" without "sin". I think it's quite difficult for someone whose mother tongue with no tones to learn Cantonese so well. I am so impressed by your videos.

All Cantonese speakers would greatly appreciate the respect you have for our language and culture. one note on 6) leih 利, "sharp" might actually be a more accurate translation because it can be used to describe a person but also a knife/sword/pair of scissors. Besides using it as an adjective, it can also be used as a noun, in that case it would mean benefits, interest (in a loan/savings) and profits. When you use it as verb it only means "benefit".

Hey just discovered your channel as a native Cantonese speaker I want to thank you for making videos like these! We love to see more Cantonese lesson videos like these online. Also in around 8:30 you were mentioning that it is difficult and confusing that laih/leih(4th tone) could mean BOTH "come" and "leave" at the same time. I definitely agree that these are two very similar sounding words that could totally get confused. But personally I'm able to distinguish the two words completely because of their different vowels and these two words will usually be used in different contexts and usages. I'd like to share my personal experience with these two words. laih(4th tone) = to come (嚟) - this word could usually be used on its own (for example 嚟啦!- come!)and it is a basic commonly used word, a part of the 'native' and 'core' Cantonese vocabulary. leih(4th tone) = to leave (離) -whereas this word is more literary(although still common), and is more often used in compound words rather than on its own. It is often used with compound words like: 離開,離婚,別離,愛恨別離 etc. So yeah since these two words are used in quite different context, I still find that it is completely possible to distinguish them. And also I totally agree that these two words have 'similar vowels,' but to me their vowels still sound distinct! Anyway I still think your Cantonese is amazing.

Hello, nicely explained for the tone system. As a Cantonese speaker born abroad, the tone is quite natural for me, but it's super hard to explain to my partner that would like to learn Cantonese. So I had to learn it back as a foreigner in order to have a better explanation. Concerning the third tone, you could use the word Sleep - 瞓覺 - Fan3 Gaau3. (I have to admit that I haven't read all the comments to check if someone replied on that.)

Your pronunciation is absolutely amazing, I consider myself fluent since I grew up with it but my younger brother is quite bad even though he, like me, grew up with it. So I can say that your pronunciation is immaculate, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if a native speaker was speaking. As a side note, I would like to mention that under your 5th tone, the definition for "ignore", although accurate in an extreme context, can also mean "don't care" in such that "care" means "caring", such as "I don't care" or "they don't care" and wouldn't necessarily mean that I'm ignoring (it/you/them). A contextual example would be, "What about John?" and the response is "I don't care (about John)". Not that you're ignoring them but you don't really care about what they are thinking or feeling (or chooses what to do). That said, it can't be used as a response if say asked "What do you want to eat?" because although in English, saying "I don't care" can mean "I don't care, I can eat anything", in Cantonese, this same phrase can't be used and if it is used, it can have the connotation of "I don't care about my hunger" which can feel very stand-off'ish, almost as if saying "Why do you care if I'm hungry?". Instead, if we want to use the English meaning of "I don't care", in Cantonese, we should use "si dan" which essentially means "whatever/anything works"

Not even Malaysians who have been speaking Cantonese all their lives can reach this level of pronunciation! Also because we are generally lazy with all the languages we know and don't care about the technical side of it 😅 I love how you switch your sound placement when switching from English to Cantonese and back!

Hi, a comment and suggestion for the tone marks. I've been using the following tone marks for my own studying purposes. For the 1, 3, 6 tones, since they're all flat tones but at different pitches, I've been using the flat tone mark but with superscripts (no superscript is implicitly a '1' superscript, then for tones 3 and 6, it'll be the flat tone mark with a superscript of 2 and 3 respectively). For tones 2, 5, since the low-rising tone ends at a slightly lower pitch than the mid-rising tone, it also makes sense to give the low-rising tone a superscript of "2" to augment the mid-rising tonal mark. For the 4th tone, I don't think we should use the tonal mark shown. Being a student of both Cantonese and Mandarin, I think that tonal mark will become confusing, the 4th tone in Cantonese is actually very similar to the 3rd tone in Mandarin (eg. compare the pronunciation of 姐姐 jyutping (ze4 ze1) to pinyin (Jiě jie)). I think the 'v' tonal mark is better in this case So using the jyutping "si", here are example words for all of the 6 tone marks: 公司 (gung1 si1)(gūng sī) 史家 (si2 gaa1)(sí gaā) 試下 (si3 haa5)(sī² haá²) 時間 (si4 gaan3)(sǐ gaān²) 市場 (si5 coeng4)(sí² coěng) 電視 (din6 si6)(dīn³ sī³) Curious what others think.

9/10 for your grasp of Cantonese tones. I'll be picky and point out that your tones 2 (3:10) and 5 (8:45) and tones 4 (5:36) and 6 (11:57) sound too similar, but it's not really noticeable unless they're spoken back-to-back. I'd say these are typical of how Westerners speak Cantonese.

I found this particular video while I was searching for something completely unrelated to the subject of your video. That being said, I’ve been best friends with someone for a little over 3 decades ( I say decades because it’s a smaller number which somehow makes me feel less old……..lol 😂 ) & my friend & his family are actually from Hong Kong. The family speaks BOTH Cantonese as well as Mandarin & over the years I’ve learned to understand BOTH languages as well as all of the dialects that come with Cantonese/Mandarin. I’m not as fluent in these two when it comes to writing characters but I am when I listen/talk. Anyhow, I decided to click on this video regardless & I’m happy I did because so many want to learn either language & sometimes both but it does look intimidating UNLESS you have someone that’s able to teach it in a way that’s fun & not as complex as what it seems to be like! I think you do an absolutely fabulous job with the way you teach & I felt compelled to tell you. I’ve just subscribed & I’m going to watch a few more videos. I also wanted to apologize for the lengthy reply but when I’m intrigued by something/someone, I tend to ramble in the first post because I feel so enthusiastic about this……..lol 😆👍🏼🙂 I hope you have a great day and I look forward to watching more of your videos. From a new subscriber in Canada 🇨🇦 Nancy! 😀
