A quick video showing some of what goes on in the Bowyers workshop. Starting with marking out a big plank of Lemonwood, cutting it out, glueing on strips of Bamboo, strapping it up whilst the glue sets, then cutting it out to the correct tapers to make the staves.

Do you use a heatingbox for drying the glue over night? Which temperature do you use for drying the glue?
@longbows
@longbows 9 ай бұрын
no, I don't need a heating box. the required temperature is written on the tube of glue. at most I may bring the materials in the house at night

Are there benefits to laminations over a selfbow, does having more laminations improve the bows cast/efficiency being able to add different properties of different woods, would tapering the internal laminates have an effect on performance ?
@longbows
@longbows 8 ай бұрын
Yes to everything, essentially the Victorians tried to simulate the properties of Yew by using other materials in a `sandwich`, central core can increase cast/speed, we use things like Osage/Purpleheart/Greenheart/Yew, yes we taper the center laminate.

@@longbows thank you for the information and it’s very interesting! What is the purpose of tapering the core laminations, is it just so you can have an easier time with the draw weight ?

Welcome. No, it's because the bow needs to bend evenly, stiffer in the middle, bending more down the length of each limb

we have covered most of this in more detail, this was just a 'whats happening in the workshop' than an educational video.

@@longbows a little. I use EA40 because of the slower cure time. I’d like to use titebond 3 but I’d be afraid of it drying before I got everything in place and clamped.
