I never would’ve thought to put those two colors together… And they are extremely powerful and strong and very bold and vivid! And then you combine them, and they just have such a range from vibrant to muted… Very nice! And I agree with the other comment or about the music:-)

I did so. I know I have not kept up with the videos, this year has had other challenges that has demanded my attention. I am going to make a follow up video on this at the end of the subscription. The lessons are really really good. The paint is also quite nice and I actually do like the brushes. I am just kinda suffering from decision paralysis looking at the lot of both at this point. Considering what good art courses cost around here, this is actually a quite good deal. Did I need another 24 brushes and 30+ tubes of gouache, -nah.

So, are you still doing encaustic paintings? Why do you youtubers only do things once except for swatching?
@xargothunter57463 ай бұрын
I have been playing around with it and researched tools and materials and find that it does not fit well into the other materials that I use at the moment. In terms of paint I mostly use acrylics, and hot wax and essential plastic is not a good combination. Other people who do encaustic apparently use oil paint as a base and to mix in the wax. I might get back into all that at a different point, but not at the moment. As to youtubers trying out a lot more materials than we end up using, yea I agree it is a thing. There are reasons for trying things out and not going further with them. Most time it is a personal choice. Perfectly good art supplies might not be a good fit for some people. I have asked Sarah Burns about a material I saw her get and use, and yea it just did not work out for her. Many times youtubers will just let things fade into oblivion because it is extremely unpopular to make videos that either is or can be considered negative. If I made a video titled something like "Why I decided not to be an encaustic painting artist", the comments would 99% be scalding me for being an idiot who know nothing. And yea, I am not an expert on the medium, but I have made my decision that it requires more time, tools, materials and hence money to get to a point where I can make something meaningful with this medium. It does not make it a bad medium at all, I am just not willing to invest further into it. On the other hand I am happy to have tried it and looked into it. Who knows, it could have been the most interesting thing I ever tried. I might pick it up later. Right now I got a metric ton of gouache to use up. XD

I know this is an old video but just wanted to say thank you, it's an excellent comparison. I've looked all over and you are the only person who bothered to swatch them directly side by side which is so helpful. Yes, the issue with the color selection is simple color mixing theory.. and I feel like people don't take that into consideration, probably because foundational color theory work is so rare these days. They look at the tin and want a color just because it's missing.. but don't understand that by the fact they all contain graphite none of them are a pure color but a convenience mix. When swatched in isolation, meadow looks obviously green, and it is..but when used in conjunction with the other graphitints it gives the appearance of yellow because it's the most yellow thing on the page. A pure yellow would be shocking and out of place. Having done a lot of work in limited palettes and alternative primary palettes, I've experienced this first hand.
@xargothunter57465 ай бұрын
I am glad you find it helpful. Thank you for the comment. <3 Yea you do have a good point. I have used these colours a fair bit and yes the "reds and yellows" look like that in connection with the other colours, especially of you manage to put them beside or close to a contrasting colour. You are also right about pure colours easily looking misplaced. I have however mixed in a bit of especially yellow with either straight watersoluble graphite or one of the graphitint pencils (the only ones I in reality does use) to create colours I think I am missing. It is rare though, that I find the set lacking to that degree. I love the look of these colours so much I keep a pan of graphite in one of my watercolour sets and a tube of it in my collection of acrylic paints too. It is fantastic to knock the pang out of high chroma colours.
@waymire014 ай бұрын
@xargothunter5746 check out watersoluble charcoal as well if you like the look. There are tinted versions out there in different formats, I think it was schmincke that came out with some gorgeous watercolor versions a few years ago.

As I somehow have a set of both, you answered very nicely the question in my mind, as to which are better. As I have a few additional shades in the Stabilo, I'm hoping that if I use these with the Faber-Castell ones, it should not be a problem. But thank you very much!
@xargothunter57468 ай бұрын
I am so very sorry for the late reply. I have been away for a while. :D Welcome to collectors anonymous. ;) I have lost count on how many watercolour pencil sets I even got. But I keep returning to the same over and over. The only problem that might arise from using these two brands together is really the potential lack of light fastness in the Stabilo pencils. You might want to buy a fixative with a UV filter in to try to counter that a bit if you make art to hang on walls. I don't know how much you layer, but you might have to make sure to finish a little bit sooner with the parts where you use the Stabilos too, as they tend to build up to fill the tooth of the paper faster than the Albrecht Dürers.

I am glad it was useful. Yea the concentration of pigment is a thing with gouache and actually also watercolour. You will get the hang of it in no time. It just take a bit of getting used to. I found mixing a black with this pallet was a bit tricky because of the red bias to both the red and blue, so if you find that too, you are not alone. :)

@xargothunter5746 Жыл бұрын
I should probably do a video about the pallet I got. I got a selection of 36 of them, and they are all from before Royal Talens re-vamped their selection. I really like their earth colours and is particular bummed out about their old raw umber and the transparent brown oxide being discontinued. Of the ones left I particular like the burned sienna and transparent red oxide. In general I think it is a rather under appreciated brand amongst professional watercolours.
@greekveteran2715 Жыл бұрын
They sure are underrapriciated. They changed their formulas and added new colours,when the company came into German hands. Since then, they've improved quality. Their Kolinsky brushes Rembrandt series 100, are some of the best Kolinsky brushes I've ever seen! Their no8 is better than my Raphael 8404 and it only costs 20 euro in Europe! Their brushes are even better than their watercolors in my opinion.Thank you for replying!@@xargothunter5746

I think the rethinking of their selection was in order. They updated it to a more modern selection and formulation. I do not have any of the new ones though, not of the Rembrandt. I got almost all the colours from the Van Gogh line and I am really impressed by those. I guess I actually like slightly opaque colours. :D Never tried their brushes at all, but I am not surprised that they are good. Talens is one of the companies where I really rarely have gotten anything that I found to be not satisfactory when price and performance is compared. I do not appreciate the smell of the extra fine gouache though. It is a bit offensive to be honest. At least it goes away after a little while. But I like the paint ok anyway.
